CURIOUS FELLOW.â€"-A few days ago in Berwick, me., a good, honest-looking country fellow was looking at the telegraph wires with astonishment. A passer-by asked him what he thought of it. “ Va‘l, I don’t ’zactly know,†replied the fellow, “but. I’m sure they wont get me to ride on the darn’d thingâ€"them wires and posts would tear my pants all to pieces.†RAISING THE WIND.â€"Tbe last speci- men of effecting this desirable object that We have heard of lately was the case ofa young officer in India, who ï¬nding the -- givernor’ deaf to all application, per- SIaded a comrade to write to the old gentleman, informing him that his son "is dead and £ 100 was wanted for funeral expenses. The money was sent, and duly acknowledged by the dutiful son. A just but a severe man built a gallows on a bridge, and asked every passenger whither he was going. Iflie answered truly die pissed unharmed; if falsely, he Was hanged on the galows. One day a passen- ger, being asked The usual question, answered, “I am going (to be hanged on the gallows.†“Now,’ said the gallows builder, “ ifI hang this man, he will have answered truly, and ought not to have been hanged; ifI do not hang him, he will have answered falsely, and ought to have been hanged.†It is not recorded what decision he come to. A young bachelor, who had been ap- pointed deputy sheriff, was called upon to serve an attachment against a beautiful young widow. He accordingly called up- on lier, and said, “Madam, I have an attachment for you †The widow blushed, and said, she was happy to inform him his attachment was reciprocated. “You do not understand me; you must poocecd to cour~t.â€â€"â€"‘-I know it is leap-year, sir, but I prefer you would do the courting.†“ Mrs. I’â€"-â€"â€", this is no time for trifling; the justice is waiting.†“The justice! why, I should prefer a parson.†A wag happening to go into the shOp of a tailor just as the latter was in the act of patching an old garment with new cloth, thus addressing the knight of the bodkin: â€"-“ You are no man, and I can prove it by the highest authority.â€â€"-“How so "I†replied the unsuspecting tailor, as he plied his needle with redouble activity.â€"“ I should like to hear the evidence of your assertion.â€"â€"“You shall be accomodated, eit‘,’ says the wag, asking at the same time if he recolected of ever having read the passage in the New Testament, which declares that “ no man putteth a piece of new cloth into an old garment.†A clergyman in Scotland desired his hearers never to call one another liars, but when any one said a thing that was not true, they ought to whistle. the loaves and ï¬shes; and, being at a loss how to explain it, he said the leaves were not like those now-a-days, they were as big as the hills in Scotland!
