l -~.7 \‘ I DISASTRO' 1iiG.t’»NI-NG. Elia Street Methodist Church Burned Down- $25,000 WORTH OF PROPERTY DESTROY ED (From the Globe.) One of the most disastrous tires which has occurred in Toronto for a lengthened period took place yesterday morning on Elmsstreet, and, we regret to state, re- sulted in the total destruction of the \Ves- leyan Methodist Church, three houses, and alarge quantity of" other property. A few minutes past two o’clock a dense vol- ume of smoke was observed issuing from the stable in rear of the residence of Mr. G. L. Beardmorc, leather merchant,situa- ted on the coaner of Terauley and Elmâ€" streets. The alarm was instantly given, and in a few minutes a man named Coch- 'rane,.a carter, reached the spot with a puncheon of water. He used his utmost endeavour to extinguish the flames, being assisted by Sergeanbmajor Ferris and other persons, but without effect. A brisk breeze was blowing at the time‘ from the north-West, and the flames were fanned by at great personal danger those on' the ground succeeded in rescuing a cow that was in the stable, at Valuable horse, how- ever, perished, as it was impossible to reach it owing to the great heat and smoke. Meanwhile the Elizabeth-street bell rang out the-alarm and was follode by the one in the tower of the Bay-street lire hall, and iii a considerably short space of time “a large crowd Of persons had collected. The neighbors at once went to work to get but Mr. Beaidmorc’s property, as it seemed impossible to save the residence of that gentleman. The active men and wo- men worked with a will, and we are happy to state that the greater portion of the r-furniture was rescued from the devouring element, although much of it was destroyed in the hasty removal. Owing to the hiin ‘wind which prevailed the burning pieces of wood and shingles Were thrown on the roof of Elm-street \Vesleyan Methodist Cliurcf. situated to the east. and in a few initiates the roof of the edifice was in a blaze, and every one on the ground felt certain that it would be destroyed. At this time many persons rushed into the burning building and the cushions, hymn books and other pro erty were brought out. An attempt made to reach the Sabbath school li- brary in the basement, but the persons who made the attempt were driven back by the smoke, and the valuable library and the organ in the gallery were destroyed ivi‘b the sacred edifice. A minute or two only elapsed after the Bay-street nell had given the first alarm when the horses had been attached to the steam fire cngine,.the fire lighted and the machine on its way at a rapid rate to the scene of the conflagration. Ten minutes aftchards the suction pipe was attached to the hydrant on the corner of Yongc and Crookshank streets, 'the stoamlup and the engine ready to com- -mence work, a number 01 the hand engines were also soon on the ground. There ap- peared, however, to be a good deal of de- lay in laying down the India‘rubbcr hose '- from the ‘ steamer,’ and when she did'get " lto work it was found that some miscreant ' bad in the most dastardly manner cut the hose, so that a great body of Water escaped. From the remarks made by the crowd, had the scoundrel been detected, that justice lie so richly deserved would have be,“ meted out to him on the spot, and police- men were at once put on guard to prevent "any further tampering with the hose. Meanwhile the fire had communicated with the large double house belonging to the v trustees ot the church, and occupied by Rev. Mr. Elliott, and liev. Mr. Dorey. but by the activity and praisewortliy clfo: is of many persons, the greater portion of the furniture. and a number of the bOnks in the libraries of both gentlemen were rescued. At this time, half-past two o’clock, the air was filled with myriads of sparks and large pieces of wood, wliis' were driven hither and thither by the wini, and it was at one time feared that the fur- niture which had been deposited on the south side of the street, in a field, would 'be ignited. The fire cast a lurid glare all to] to the trustees of the church, and were over the city, and the flames soon mounted tie/the tower and cupola oftbe church, and in a few minutes it fell to the ground with a crash, and was speedily followed by the walls, the building being completely gutted. Meanwhile a steady and powerful stream of water from the steam fire engine had been brought to bear on the residences 01 Rev. Messrs. Elliott and Dorey, but the object of the Chief Engineer was to en- deaVUur to prevent the tire spreading to the two-story brick house, occupied by Mr."G. H. Wyatt on the east. In this he fortunately succeeded, only one window and a portion of the root being scorched, a second stream from the steamer having been brought to bear on the buildingitsrli. It was remarked by all, that although there appeared to be a plentiful supply of water, none of the band engines were in operation for a long time after they arrived on the ground. On asking for an explanation, we receivsd for replv that the Hose Com- pany were engaged in laying hose for the steamer, and that there was no hose on the ground to convey water from the 11 - drants on Terauley-street. This ought to be remedied in the future, and it would perhaps be well to organiZe a company in connection with the steam fire engine, and no doubt the Committee on Fire, Water and Gas will give the matter their early consideration. The buildings completely destroyed were the large rough-cast house occupied by Mr. Beardmore, the Wesleyan Methodist Church and the parsonage ad- jOining. The two last-named buildings, as also the furniture in the parsonage, belong~ insured to the extent of $10,400 in the Royal and British American Insurance Companies’ offices. 'lliere was, lioweVer, we regret to learn, a heavy debt on the church which will not be covered by the amount of insurance. Rev. Mr. Elliott lid Rev. Mr. Dorcy had their personal ,eflects and libraries insured. The hou3e tenanted by Mr. Beardmore belonged to the March estate, and it is stated that the policy of insurance was allowed to expire , . {thewin‘d and spread With fearful rdvand l l ,4“ ._. . « l l W, _ . U, To "B Um) '4 us. succeeded, as we have previously stated, f .I in saving the greater portion of his valuable furnitureâ€"the remainder is amply covered by insurance in the ‘ Royal.’ He also lost a valuable horse, carriage, sleigh, and a quantity of harness. The total amount of property destroyed could not be worth less than twenty-five thousand dollars. Much credit is due to tlioscipersons who exerted themselves to save‘property. But it would liaVe been Well if the members of the fire brigade had shown a like activity instead of listlesst standing by their engines, grumbling that the hose company did not supply them with hose. From the appear- ance that the fire piesented when first ob- served, and the fact that the hose of the steam fire engine Was cut the moment it commenced work, it seems evident that an incendiary had been at .work, and as'the winter is now approaching and fires likely to be frequent, the citizens would do Well to be on the alert. -' Fine IN Biixniprou,iâ€"At three o’clock on Saturday morning last a fire broke out in the furniture warehouse of Mr. '1‘. Mc- Ilroy, Brampton. The warehouse occuâ€" pied by Mr. McIlroj-g and an adjoining lionse, occupied by were all totally consumed. Much new furniture in the wart-liouse,.and,a good deal in the two private houses was burned. Premises partly insured. Mr. Mcllroy was proprietor of the three buildings. .___..â€"__a_. nominalâ€"17mm CURRENT. Akin r§~ Kirkpatrick’s Report.
