Where we were schoolboys in old time, manhood was a dream. Tris brook is choked with fallen leaves. The pond is dried away ; I scarce believe that you would know The dear old place to-da). - The school-house is no more. John, Beneath the locust trees; The wild rose by the window side No more anes in the breeze ; The scattered stones look desolate. The sod they rested on Has been ploughed by stranger bands, Since you and I were gone. The chestnut tree is dead, John. And what is sadder nowâ€" The broken grape vine of our swing Hangs on the withered bough ; I read our names upon the bark, And found the pebbles rare Laid up beneath the hollow side. As we had piled them there. Beneath the grass-grown bank, John, I looked for our old spring, That bubbled down the elder path, Three paces from the swing. The rushes grow .upon the brink, The pool is black and bare. ‘ And not a foot this many a day, It seems. Iras trodden there. I took the old blind road, John, That wandered up the hill; 'Tis darker than it used to be. And seems so lone and still ; The birds sing yet among the bonghs, Where once the sweet grapes hung. But not a voice cflruman kind Where all our voices rung. I set me on the fence, John, That lies as in old time, That same half- panel in the path. “’0 used so oft to climb; And thought how o’er the bars of life Our playmates have passed on. And left me counting on this spot The faces that are gone. lfliartlluurnua, \Vhy are two young ladies kissing each other an emblem of Christianity? FRIDAY, May 2.-â€"-Aftcr the rain ceased the sun came out, and al- though wc had a good breeze, (wind being ahead) the remainder of the day was comparatively pleasant; towards evening it begins to feel considerably warmer. During the afternoon we were some- what amused by two Yankees who undertook to personals the charac- ters of JeffDavis and Abe Lincoln-â€" each in their turn occuPying the capstain and haraguing the Iookcrs on. They abused each other as Yankees only can and dar’c do, without coming to blows. The ora- tions were generally wound up by repairing to the bar, where friend~ shrp was soon restored. For upwards of three years past, I have been engaged in a business. which has yielded me at the rate of $3.000 per annum, but being desi- rous of going to Europe in the course of a few months for the purpose of there introducing the business, I am willing to teach it to any one who will send me $51. The business is no humbug, but of a highly useful and general character. adapted both to cities and villages, and one that any person of ordinary capacity, young or old, male or female. can acquire with a few hours’ practice, and by which they can secure a very handsome income. Several young ladies who have received instructions from me, both in New York State and Pennsylvania, are earning- upwards of $20 per week by it, and there is no reason why any one else cannot do the same. Invalids, even, can do well by it, asit is no ped- dling affair. but a business that is perfectly re- spectable. Gentlemen and ladies of leisure who Would like to learn the business for their their own amusement or pleasure, will ï¬nd the practice of it a pleasant pastime, and one that they will take great interest in. On receipt of $1,I will send printed instructions by which any person can readily acquire the art, and these instructions will also contain every particular relative to the carrying it on so that it will be highly proï¬table. The purchaser of the “ print- ed instructions †will also be authorized to teach it to others; and I have sometimes received as high as $200, for teaching it personally to a single individual. I would state further that $2.50 or $3.00 will buy every thing that is ne- cossary to commence the business with. and the articles can be got almostanywhere, in city or country, or, if preferred, 1 can furnish them ADDRESS.
