“ ROUGH NOTES OF A VOY- AGE FROM NI,thf YORK TO bAN FRANCISCO.” Gm:iiiiutzdfrnm our last. While I this has to accommodate abontGOO. | Willie the sun 5 lays are beaming Breakfast is now on the table-nice and mblasses, colliic, biscuit and that everlasting saftjun/L' ; fortunately I managed to get to the second table and made the best meal I have had since leaving New York. it occu- pies about three hours to get through with a meal, so that those who have to wait till the last fccl in excellent humor for'eating. is good for giving an uppetitc.‘-So far. there is a very cordial, friendly feeling among the paSSengers, and a cheerful readiness to accommodate each other as much as circumstances will permit. Although there has been so much crowding, Sun, to get totbe tables, I have not seen a single case of quari'elling as yet.â€"-tliis for" bearance is highly commeiidablc.â€"â€"- There are more than one hundred women and children in the stecragc, and quite a number of ladies in the state rooms,â€"â€"â€"first and second cabin; qnite sufficient to form the nuclneus of a new colony. We are now pass- ing the island of Mara Guana, one of the Bahamas, and the first land seen since leaving Sandy Hook.â€" ‘I‘be’Captain told me it belonged to John Bull; I told him I was aware of that, and also the whole of the Bahamas, some five hundred in untilâ€"- her, belonged to the same power.â€" He also informed me that we were 145 miles from Cuba, which we would pass to-nigbt. We sail be- tween Cuba and llavti, instead of passing through the Florida Keys ; this, I suppose, is to avoid any risk ofcollision with Southern privatecrs. Mara Guana seems a barren rocky island, covered with shrubs or small trees. I cannot observe anything like a habitation on it, but then we are some miles (perhaps 5 or G) from the coast. IIczit very great to-day. Went on the hurricane deck to find a shade from the sun, and fortunately found my trunk, which must have been fished from the botâ€" tom ‘0ftbe pile by some other perâ€" son probably hunting their own.â€" Had a wash in salt water fresh pumped from the sea. '.l.‘empcr- atnre, I think, about 110° falircnâ€" heit; I believe that IS blood heat, and the surface sea water I am sure is nothing below that. Water is in great demand to-day, but there is plenty to drink and very good water so far. The saloon tender doing; ‘a good business to-day in the liquor lineâ€"«ten cents a glass for anything he has to sell. Apples five cents each; of course it is an extortion. but 1 notice some who patronize him very freely. Two sailors who had imbibed rather freely lo-d got into a dispute with the first and 1..'.ji=.u;cnd mates of the vessel; they got a pretty sound tlircshii and were put in irons for an honr, whicb scemel to sober them considerably. One of these was in the concert last night, which disturbed my slui‘nbers ,so much. we are now (6 o’clock tutu.) passing the island oflnac‘uara; a number of other small islands are to be seen to the north-east; they seem small, Some very large fishes have been seen to-day rolling their unwmldy bodies sometimes above water. I could not make out their true names; some called them nvv l&\. . 1““ r39 Harpies, and others Brodics, and a host of other names. Of course some of these was correct. Judg- ing from appearances, 1 should think they would be about twelve feet long. Supper has been on the table some two hours, but I will be in time enough for something. I will now go and see what it isâ€"â€"-tea and, , biscuit, salt junk and a very few po- tatoes. the meal, played some airs on the flute to a very large filll,llClICC.~â€"â€" Other flute players were anxious to try the instrument, whom I will- ingly gratified. A general bustle is now gomg on preparatory to sleeping; some are going on the huriicane deck to spend the night on bales, boxes, (Sac. ; every avail- able place is occupied. At length the majority are still, yet some small groups prefer to sit chatting, laughing and singing, to the great annoyance of their neighbors who wish to sleep. VVEDNESDAY, May 7tli.â€"~Be~ tween 4. and 5 o’clock, A.M., all are in motionâ€"«some going to the pump, others returning after their morning ablutions. Many who have not marine soap return dirtier than they went. Salt water mon soap form a kind of glutinous or gummy substance that is not easily rubbed off the skin. [bad to try a second dip this morning, having been fortunate enough to get a rub of marine soap, by which meansl got a clean wash. Com- ing on deck again and looking north» ward, I got a glimpse of the moun- tains of Cuba. On the Opposite side, at a considerable distance, the mountains in I-Iziyti were observ- able like blue clouds on the horizon. \Ve are now sweeping do vn tlie~ I The sea brccnc ' Having got through with, and comâ€" . .n'aa‘v Carribbean Sea with good speed. Great scrambling for the potatoes, and much difficultyin getting one or two. When potatoes are the go all seem to be lrish. whether French, Italian, German English, Scotch, American or Canadian; and I believe all these countries are represented here. Canada in particular is well represented. I have conversed with passengers from Bruce, Itin- ron, Lainbton, Waterloo, VVelling- ton, Oxford, Brant, lIalton, \Vent- 'worth, Welland, Durham, Princel Edward ; also, Toronto and lilamiâ€"l ton cities have their representatives. Ialone am the humble representa- tive of York; and I am proud to be able to state, which 1 did withy out prejudice or partiality. that the conduct of Canadians on this vessel at least, reflects no discredit on their country. They are quiet, orderly, agreeable and obliging, and always show a disposition to make each other as comfortable as circumâ€" stances permit. Intimate acquaint- ' ance are formed by Canadians here from different and very distant counties. with a facility that is al- mOst surpassing. Urbanity and kindness, so far, have characterized the conduct of captain and officers towards the passengei s; have heard no complaint as yet from any pasâ€" senger 'n regard to any officer on this boat, with the exception of the waiters at table, and these have re- ally too much to do. I think the passengers are SOl'l'lCllll‘iCS too ex- actingâ€"«poor Sambo has enough to do to attend to the wants of so many. Some beautiful birdsâ€"a small species of the gull, of a brown color, with white net-k, approach within a few feet of us as we stand on deck. They have a beseeching look; their natural language evi- dently is, ‘give us soi‘nethingr to eat.’ One was so tame that had I a biscuit to offer itI believe it would have taken it from mv hard. For upwards of three yams past,l have been engaged in a business, which has yielded me at the rate of $3,000 per annum, but being desiâ€" rous of going to Ii‘urope in the Course of a few months for the purpose of there introducing the bustiiess, I am willing to teach it funny one who will send me ,fi'n’l. The business is no liuuibug, but of a highly useful and general character, adapted both to cities and villages, and one that any person of ordinary capacity, young or old, male or female. can acquire with a few hours’ practice, and by which they can secure a very handsome income. Several young ladies who have received instructions from me, both in New York State and Pennsylvania, are earning upwards of $20 per week by it, and there is no reason why any one else cannot do the same. lnvalids, even, can do well by it. as it is no ped- dling afl'air. but a business that is perfectly re- spectable. Gentlemen and ladies of leisure who would like to learn the business for their their own amusement or pleasure, will find the practice. of it a pleasant pastime, and one that they Will take great. interest in. On receipt of $1,I will send- printed instructions by which any person can readily acquire the art, and these instructions will also contain every particular relative to the carrying it on so that it will be highly profitable.
