Markham. Sept. 1:2. 1862, 199-4 ’â€" V To fir nil INDEPENDENT ELECTORS OF THE iiiiiiiirii iiirirri __.__â€".â€"â€"â€"- GENTLEMEN : You will soon be onlled upon to exercise the elective franchise iii selecting' a person to re- present you in the Legislative Council. Nominated unanimously by the Conservative ' Convention, assembled at Bradlord on the 21st. April last. further assured by the their absent delegates, with a solitary exception, of their concurrence iii tirat nomination. and with a promise of a very much larger suppOitfi-om North York, than has hitherto been accorded to a Conservative, 1 let it my duty, alter corr- suiting with a number of the delegates, assem- bled at Bradford for that purpose, to accept of your nomination and declare myself a candi- date for your squ'i-agos I I beg to assure the Ceriscrvafivrs of the Divi- sion, that this expression of their confidence is esteemed by me a high honor, the more valued because alike unexpected and nus-ought for, and that no exert‘on on my part shall be training, in prosecuting with their aid and heart; good 3 will, this contest for the Midland Division to a successful issue. i Attire onset I may just as well declare the I fact, that l have no confidence whatever in the present Administration. 1 speak not of indiviâ€" duals: there are those aiiiriig tliciir Ydllliill i sincerely respect, and u how itiillilllllf‘lllfx, 1MP- liamentary knowledge and political ('(iII.-l:‘lt‘rlil'i:.‘, entitle Iill‘ll’l to that respect, but as a Coveiri- ' merit, they neither possess the ability, the 111303“ ledge. the experience nor the power iiecessaiy‘ ; to tire successful conducting of the ttIIlriib' o1" this Province. Their advent to power was based upon their vote on the second reading of rho. i‘iiiliiia liiil. Virtuain denying that the defence of the Pro- viirce required a reorganization of tho i‘iiilitiaâ€" , a vote little calculated to lmbri‘ llui'i'isii Cor:- MECTION, and which they tlierirsoivos were forced to ignore. before they had been a Week in office. Look, for one moment. on the majority of the Upper Canada section of the Government. How deeply deiiioralized ! No sooner did these hypocritical cla‘nourers for Numerical Repre- sentation perceive a chance of office, by aban- doning that just and salutary measure (without which, according to their own showing, Upper Canada neVer can obtain its rights.) than,tui'n- ing their backs upon their reiterated pledges, they hasten to accept the programme of a Pre- mier diametrically opposed to their own views upon that very question, and whose otherwise notoriously Lower Canadian leanings left no doubt as to the character of the policy of his Administration A dispossionale judge pronouncing upon their political proceedings, might doubt. wholiier the moral turpitude of their acts, or their auda- city in presenting Iillr‘llli-ltli'r't‘tv‘i for ro-olcctiori, called most loudly for public denunciation; but there can be no question for the future, as to the reliance to be placed upon their soieiriii deâ€" clarations, or the conlldence to Vl’lIiC-II their acts as public men have entitled them. Asa Government, their majority of seven may enable them to make a show of economy by dismissing a fo w supernumerary clerks from the public departineirts,to be hereafter replaced by others from their own friends; but to expect at their hands a thorough measure aer/rurzscn uunr, commensurate with the exigencies of the Re‘venue. would be an idle dream indeed. Myopinions upon the prominent political ques- tions of the day, Rerunsss'rit'riox AND SEPA- RATE SonooLs, are so generally known, tirat in alluding to thorn, it is hardly necessary to say more. than that they have undergone little or no change. From the institution 0T our present Common School System iii 1842, in the very first enact- ment. Separate Schools formed a part, I, then thought and I still think an objectionable garl. of that system. My conviction is, that the parâ€" ties now most anxious to obtain greater l'aeilia ties for such schools. would themselves, should they eventually succeed. be found the greatest sufferers from the change they desn-e. to say nothing of the additional expense to which that change would necessarily subject them. The claim of Western Canada to be repre- sented in the Legislature in proportion to her Population, and regardless of a dividing line between the Provinces, must in the end prevail, notwithstanding the desertion of its late noisy advocates. The time may Ire delayed. through the recreancy of those to whom her interests are entrusted, but come it must: numbers alone will eventually settle the question and a relusal be no longer possible. I have already visited almost every locality in the Division, and received hearty assurances of support from Large numbers of Electors. but it was impossible to see all. My intention is now to commence holding meetings in the different Townships, of which due notice will be given. when I hope to have an opportunity of explaining my views upon political matters more fully, and replying, where reply may be necessary. to the outrageousiy false charges that have been so piontit‘ully heaped upon me. I have the honor to be, Gentlemen, Your obedient servant, J. W. GAMBLE. Bond Head, Sept 9, 1862. .6. B. HENDERSON, are. Oculist and Aurist, (Late of No 658 Broadway. New York.)
