Soon the premises occupied by Mr. Henderson, grocer, were in a blaze, and then followed the tone merits occupied by Hr. John Wilson and Mr. 13. Lee, shoemakers, and W. Lee, baker. While these were being devastated. attempts were made to pull down the premises oc- cupied by Mr. Wm. VVarlis, saddler, and Mr. Prest,shor-maker ; but be- fore they succeeded. the fire reach- ed the premises. From Mr. Wallis’ property the flames speedin com- municated Willi Mr. Caldwell’s chair factoryâ€"-tlie Temperance Hallâ€"un- der which Mr. Saxton had a jewelery shop. The flimes continued to spread, notwithstanding the desper- ate efforts made to check them, and soon communicated with the steam :abinet shop of Mr. Joseph Millard. Meanwhile the Hook Con'ipany di- rected their efforts to pull down the building OCCUpled by Mr. John Graham, toy and fancy shop; but the flames reached it before they succeeded. Here the fire was checked, so far as Main street was concerned,â€"-â€"not without the Com- mercral Block having taken fire in two or three places, but as many times cxtinguishedfi The tannery and otheroutbuildings in the rear of the Wallis block were all burned, save anl except a small stable.â€" The firimes also went north, and .,-._-,c-c---.
