Seeds are sown, they do not come up, and they are set down as old and iiiipei't'tact.'â€"â€" While such seedsyarc" doubtless sold by some, our experience is that re spccmole Sectlsmcn ge‘i‘ierally send out reliable seeds, and that the want ofsuccess is often the fault of the sewer. There is no general, rule as to the time that seeds. should keep, and seeds, after" being ‘sown, differ as to their power of resisting do my if the circumstances are unfavorable to their iiniiicdiale gorminatioa.â€"-'- Three conditions are necessary to the growth of all seedsâ€"air, mois- ture, and sufï¬cient licart. Any one of these failng. the seeds will not grow. The amount of heat required for germination varies greatly With different seeds. ‘liosc of the com- mon cluckci‘iwced will start at a temperature just above freezing point, while those of some tropical plants require a temperature ofsomc 70 or 80 degrees. The seeds of the plants commonly cultivated germi- nate at a temperature offilty or six- ty degrees. Moisture is required, not. only to soltcn the seed coat, but to enable the germ to grow, and too little or too much is equally fatal to success. If the soil is too dry the seeds remain unchanged ; and if an ex 'ess of moisture is present, the seeds, if delicate, will decay. In well-drulncd soil the proper amount of water is held by capillary attrac- tion. The third requisite, air, is always present in recently worked soil. All the conditions being favor- able, there is a great difference in the times that seeds require for ger- mination. I’lziccd under similar Cir- cumetauccs, it has been found that wheat and millet germinate in one day. beans, radislics, and turnips in two, and lettuce in four days, while melons and cucumbers, require five or six days, parsnips twenty, and parsley thirty or forty days. The seeds of some trees and shrubs re- main in the ground one and even two years before they germinate. The common cause of failure with good seeds are too dcep or too early smving, and excess of moisture;- Vthn small seeds are planted too deeply, the vitality of the germ is exhausted before it can reach the light and air necessary toils growth; such seeds should be hardly covered with soil, and if there be any danger offlic surface becoming too dry, it should be shaded and watered light- ly. Very small seeds may be sprinkled on niccly pi‘cparcl soil, and then lay a board upon the sur- face till they start. When sowing is done too early, the ground is too (mill, and many sccds rot before it comes to a proper temperature to cause-germinalion. The much nioisv turc til the soil excludes the requi- site air from the soil, and this one of the necessaries being wanting the seeds dccay.~â€".dmerican flgricullw risl. l Acorn TRICKf-A fashionably dressed lady, not long ago, drove in a handsome private carriage to a well known lunatic asylum situated a few miles from Paris andrequcsl- ed to see the proprietor.
