The details, as far as we have bnen 1|le to glean them, an: as follows -â€"Two brothers, named John and Samuel McDowell, together with their sister Eizu, came to Londoa on Saturday to dispose of some pro- ducé, and make some purchases, and on their return home the men became intoxica- ted.‘ John’s wife was away picking hnps .Vhen her husband and his brother I'CfllV'YlCll, and whe I she came back ll ey xx 00 boil] 55 md ing in front of the shanty. Just then her husband rushed in and engrin demanded why she had let the cows in at that time of the night. Some hard words passed. and John struck his wife on the head with his clinched list. This was ‘ what Samuel had anticipated, and to prevent V'hich he had come that niorht to his bro ‘ that": house. At the sight of the stroke he entirely gave wayto his passion, and rose hastily from the supper table and h )unded withteorihje ferocity upon his brother. "IKE MURDERER ARRESTED. I remain, Dear Sir, Yum-’5 respectfully REUBEN LEE. LONDON, Sept.4, 1865. Sept. 5. up at five more the horrible tragedy was enacted. Seizinor a stick which hud'been used to stir the tire, John rushed to meet. his brother in deadly conflict. He made one bound to clear the fence and to get at his brother, but triped and fell upon the ground. Samuel bounded upon him in an instant, and with great strength wrenched the from weapon his grasp, and as he lay partly stunned by the fall and nearly mad with rage by the injuries already received, Samuel lifted the stick and struck him with all his might three heavy blows upon the head. At the second blow John’s wife ran up, and threw herselfbe- tween the two men, and implored Samuel, in the name ofGod, to spare her husband. The wife lifted him up gently, and seeing, by the moon's bright rays, his upturned eyes and ashy countenance, and feeling that his pulse had ceased to throb, turned upon. Samuel McDowell and charged him with killing her husband. The death of his brother did not appear to disturb him much. He lay outin the bush all night, like a hunted felon, every moment expecting the officers ofjustice upon his track, and the fear of detection, instead of herring him to elude pursuit, seemed to paralyze his energies. The prisoner was committed to take his trial for the murder of his brother, John McDowell, at the next Assizcs. The sad affair caused an intense excite- ment. in the neighbourhood, and is the topic in everybody's mouth. On Sunday afternoon an inquest was held on the body of the murdered man by COrOA ner Flock, when all who had any knowledge of the Circumstances were thoroughl ex- amined touchinjr the matter. Dr. Iv onl'e, of London. made a post morth examination of the body, and sand that deceased had sus- tained a great many hurts and bruises in all parts of his body. The heaviest blow he stated, were inflicted on the mouth and nose. The skull was not fractured, but death re‘ sulth from concussion, which produced a rupture of the blood vessels olithe brain. She said that she had a maina for destroyin ;_ human lie and it was only by the greatest self-re- straint that she could keep herself from secretly poisonin I all persons with whom she was on terms of friendship. She had, how- ever, poisoned tour childxen and two adults. and what makes the matter still more revolt- injr is the fact that two ofthe former were her own children. and one of the latter her first husband’s.
