Beunet AntilCosiive and Tonic Pillsâ€"Dr. Colby Hunt’s Empire Hair Gross Jacob’s Rheumatic Liquid New Millinery Goods-Mrs. Myers, Hamilton Stove Denotâ€" James Stewart, The adoption of the ballot is now being seriously discussed. by the press throughout the country ;’ it is suggested as a remedy against intimidation and corruption. We have no hesitation in saying, that at no period of our political history has bribery and corruption been so freely spoken of, as has been the case at our recent parliamentary elections; it is not conï¬ned to one side, but each positively assert that the other expended money profusely in order to purchase votes to secure the return of their parti cular candidates. “here there is so much smokc, there is evidently some fire, and we regret to say that it is our im- pression that there is good ground for the assertion that there was bribery and cor- ruption, to an alarming extent, at our last general elections. Numbers of men who had solemnly promised their votes to one set of candidates, Wheeled round, on the days of' the election, and voted for the o :pnsite men; others, whose teams were engaged to bring voters to the polls for one party, turned and work» ed in the service of the party opposed to that for which they had agreed to work. Such being the facts, we feel we are justiï¬ed in concluding that bribery and corruption were the causes of' these re- sults. An innnediate remedy must be applied, or our elective franchise will be come a huge humbug. and no man will be elected, as a representative of the peo- ple, except he is prepared to squander money and corrupt the people. We do not know of" any other remedy than the adoption of vote by ballot, and making it a criminal offence to offer or receive money for votes, or the conveyance of; voters to the polls. The places for holding elections are now at such con- venient distances that no may, who is worthy of having a vote, need plead the difï¬culty ot'going to the poll,â€"â€"the pri- vilege of voting is a most impo-tant one, and should be exercised ; the man who will not voluntarily go forward to the, poll and record his vote, without fee or re Ward, should be distranchised. There are many arguments in favour of the ballot, waich we propose referring to at another time; but, for the present, we will content ourselves by calling atten- tion to the important necessity that exists for a searching remedy for the evils which we ï¬nd growing up in the management of our elections. Suspension of the Commerciai Bank- Yesterday, the branch of the Commer- cial Bank in this city bore the notiï¬ca- tion on its doors that in consequence of ï¬nancial diflicultics the institution had suspended payments, The same news had already been communicated to the public through the morning papers; and although as might be expected in regard to an institution of the age and standing cfthe bank, a considerable amount of its paper was held throughout the city, yet the announcement failed to produce other than a Sigh of regret, and very little excitement resulted. Among the knowing ones the ne NS had spread about midnight, and underhand dodges to re- place Commercial notes with specie were attempted as soon as business places opened, but the news became general be- fore much of their paper changed hands. In the morning, a crowd of‘cunsidemble size assembled in front of the banking house, and satisï¬ed themselves by crowd- ing the stone steps of the establishment to read the annnncement. By 10 o'clock 1 however these had dispersed, and the solitary police stationed for precaution- , ary purposes at the bank door, had with- ‘drawn for want of employment. The rumours in circulation for some davs past, regarding the position of the bank s affairs had, in some measure, tended to place its bills out of the hands of the 1 public; and asaconsequence, few, cmn- paratively, were found on the street; while in the other banks the influence of the failure was so .rcely felt, In one so little gold had not been demanded for some weeks as on yes erday; While in all, the experience of' yes terday is a cause for congratulation, as showing, that notwithstanding the severe shock experienced among the workingr classes by the suspension, their conï¬dence in the other banking institu- tions remained unshaken. Anticipating the result, from their knowledge of the Conference at Montreal on the same day the other banks had made provision for any demand, and were amply prepared to meet any druin on their funds. This was unnecessary; and the good sense of the public was evident in the absence of any great excitement. As compared with the time when the failure of the Bank of Upper Canada was announced the excitement bears no comparison, and business proceeded yesterday as if noth- ing had happened. In the afternoon the hills of the heck were largely purchased T HORNHILL CEMETERY. THE NEWS IN THE CITY. Fifty cents was frequently offered, but holders preferr- eol retaining their paper to disposing at that price. The fact. that the suvings' bank branch had for its principal depo- sitors working,r people, was anticiputdd to cause alarm ; but although its indebtedâ€" ness to these is nearly $200,000, mauers passed off quietly.
