It has been sarcastitally remarked of the Scottish marliage luw that he nzust he a prudent, hacheior who sz say that, ac- cardiacr to it, he is not married. The dil- ficulty appears to he quite ~n another direc- tion in (the United States, and judgingr from the divorced advertisements so common in Ihe American papers, she must be a wise wife who can say that she ix»: married. ' Last Tuesday evening, the officers and several members of the the above society in this village, met in the Temperance Hall, and held a public debate on the following question, “ Resolved thatti‘iul by Jury is a greater boon to society, than a Free Press.” Mr, Robb. H. Hall occupied the Chair. The question was discussed by. the following gentle- At the approaching session of' Parlia- ment, it is to be hoped that the consid- eration of the subject of opening up the vast territory we possess in the North West. Will receive the careful attention of our legislators; and not only this, but, we trust, the work of opening up that territory by means of roads and other lines of communication will, as much as possi ble,bc accelerated. We areglud to observe that the Government have already taken steps in the right direction, 21* We understand Mr. Brigelund and a stuff of men are now engaged on the read be tween Fort William and Red River road, however, we understand, presents un- usual difficulties and unless that gentle- man received very large additions to his force after he left 'l‘oronto, we fear very little of' this ‘much desired work Will be accomplished bcf'ore winter. The total distance between the two points, Fort fl illiam and the lied River Settle» ment, is something over 603 miles ; and this through a Country intersected by streams. swamps 850., so that our readers can easily perceive tlut without a strong body of workmen, a great deal of time will bene ass-4rin occupied in its con- structiom On the other hand if a liberal grun- is nude at the ensuing session, commu nicution, we have no doubt, could be established with Red River through our own Territory before the close of next summer Aside irom the advantage that would accrue to us from the open< mg up for settlement of this territory, fertile in mineral and agricultural rc- sourccs as it is described to be, and we have no doubt it is; we Would secure the whole trade of the Red River Set- l tlement, which in itselfwould, we think, i amply compensate us for the outlay which would be entailed ; we trust, there- fore, that the coming session of Parlia- ment will not be allowed to close with- out an energetic movement in. this direc- tion. Clark. of Yorkville, zmd several others exhibited Buggies. Wuggons, 820., some of" which were very good. Many other articles such as Straw Cutters, portable Cider Mills, Seed drills we pass by as they are too numerous to identify, and enter the tent Here the first thing to be seen was a‘ large display of roots stretching up one side; the potatoes were a very fine sam ple', but carrots, turnips, wurzel, beets. &e., were not so fine as we have seen. no doubt the late drought may account for such. Passingr from the roots we came to the Saddler’s corner, where several parties exhibited specimens of‘ their workmanship. Martin Burns of Cluirville, had a very neat set of double harness for which he took the first prize; several other sets showed good work, and several others we think. from their plain- ness would have looked better at home. ' Passing on those who liked music, had the opportunity of having such from an hm‘mcnium that stood next in the row, from which a person was sending;r forth tune after tune. The next in order was a large number of' Sewing Machines, the kinds of‘ which are all too well known to require a word. Turningr to the centre oF the tent containing fine arts, the ladies work, diary produce &c., we saw a very fine display which would be to difficult to identify; ‘quilts, fine shirts, knited mits, gloves, crotchet work, were articles executed with the nicest taste. a Several grain cushers wore exhibited, Said to be capable 01" crushing: from 50 to 80 bushels per hour; from the sim- plicity of'the article, they cannot be very expensive, and no doubt one would soon pay for itself in any farmers barn. , A Mr Caster presented several arti- ‘ 015 of his own invenzion which drew con- , sidernble attention. The first was a Idirching machine, which, if capable of working as described, cannot fail from becoming a most usel'ul ariiele to th e Canadian farmer. P is high time that many of'thom be awoke to the necessity of such improvements on their land, and learn the secret how their farms may be increased downward as well as outward. He also had a hay fork, a thing of the most simple nature for which he was taking: orders for three dollars;- he deâ€" clares it would lift off a load of hay at three drafts, but supposing it would take six, it would pay every farmer to get one. The same genius had a Hy drostatic engine, intended to take the place of a water-wheel, so that mills may be run with much less water, to almost any power. The Vaughan Township Agricultural Society held their Full Fair at Buxwick, on Wednesday, the 23rd instant, and, we are happy to say, was a complete suedeSs, and gave indications of being, before many years, one of the best fairs in the country. The weather and roads gave every inducement for visitors,v and at, an early hour large crowds began to pour in from every side and soon presented a gathering of several thousands- The number of enteries for exhibition! were very large and to a great extent‘ good The horses were numerous, in excellenuconditiol., and made a fine show in the ring. Mr. J E Davis, from ourl village, as usual, took the first prize with} his splendid carriage team. Toe cattle were not so numerous, but there were1 some splendid ones present. among which were several yoke of oxen Well worthy of a place In the show. The enteries of sheep was extremely large, and we think of' as fine a. quality as we ever saw. It is indeed no wonder that dissatisfaction should often arise among exhibitors at the decision of' the Judges when called upon to find a dilferenee where but little‘ if any, exist. Mr. Colley, of' Albion, Mr. Jackson, of To"onto tip Mr. Bell of York, Mr. .Jamieson and Mr, McNair ot' Vaughan, and others showed some splendid pens in the various classes. There were Fanning Mills shown from several makers. Mr. Thos. \-\ ilson of' Richmond Hill, surpassed all the rest, and soon had on its side the ticket hear- ing the first prize‘ 0n coming to the mechanical work, we found thatde )al-tment very largely i-eprcsented,'aud some of the 'very best specimens of workmanship we ever Wit- nessed at one of' our country shows. The principal exhibitor was Mr. Abell of Bui‘chlgh-mn whose establishment We saw some articles which spoke at; once of him being able to px'oduce work equal to any in the conntrv. A thresh- ing m:\0hin.e bearing thefirst prize ticket from l"z'0\'incial exhibition won much admiration; we noticed one improve- 111entr.‘wl.ieh cannot fail of'being a great advantage on m my occasions, that; was 3' Smallcontrivance by which the long straw canvas’ may be turned at an tingle. so that the straw may be carried in any direction. He had also several reupers, mowers, ploughe, ugol: of “'luola appeared to be got up in the very best stylei' Brown, Neil, & (30., also present- ed some good ploughs from a Burwick‘ establishment. l The show of pigs was small in proâ€" portion, but those present were by no meansinl'erior, We next came to the l'owls, this department was not largely represented, but a few coops of each; we all know individually, they are but small Value compared with the stock by which they were surrounded; but the object of posseSsing the best kinds should he no less. \\ ith those present we find no fault as their were some splendid specimens eqhibitcd. One coop con- taining three small speckled fowls for beauty could not be surpassed, and the sort would become profitable, as the owner said they layed continually. Vaughan Fair. Dr Colby’s Anti-Costive and Tonic Pills supply a. long felt want. Do you use Jacobs’ Liquid. If not try a bottle and you will never again be without it. When the Council adjourned to meet at Mr. Sexsmith’s Inn7 on Tuesday, the 17th of December next, at. ten oclock, A By Law was passed fixing the place for the nomination of Reeve, Deputy and Councillors, at Ballintrae, on Monday, the 23rd day of December next. and reappointing the Returning Officers of last year; viz : for the 1st Divissim, Mr. Thos. Lloyd; 2nd Diviâ€" sion, J. W. Collins, Esq; 3rd, Mr. S. T. Dogherty, and the 4th, Mr. Edw. Reynolds. 1 On motion of Mr. Clubine, seconded by Mr Baker, the foregoing agreement was confirmed. An agreement was entered into be tween the H eeve (in behalf of' the Cor- poration) and H Q. On motion of Mr. Clubine, seconded by Mr Macklem, the sum of $10 was granted for the relief of Robert Heal, to be expended under the supervision of Mr. ’l‘hos Cosford. Mr Jones, seconded by Mr Macklem, moved that the conditions of the appro- priation of $30, to be expended in Stouffville, by the Municipal Corporation Murkham‘ be complied with, and that the Municipal Corporation of Whit- church appropriate 3 like sum of $30, to be expended on the Town Line in Stouffville, and that the said amount be taken into consideration when striking the municipal rate, and that John Jer- man be a Commissioner to expend the same, when collected. On Motion of Mr. Clubine, szconded by Mr. Baker, the time for expanding the appropriation on the Road between Lots 15 and 16 in the 2nd COIL, and at Lot 18 in the 3rd Com, was extended to the lst day of November nextv Claims for damages done to sheep by dogs, duly attested by Lyman Bogart, for $8, and Adam Hastings, for $6, presented by the clerk. And the petition of the Wiiow Mary DIcCoy, praying to be relieved from dog tax, not having had one for a year past, together with the certificates of several of the neighbors to that effect. “ Shop Teeth,” no doubt to let every passer know that if he or she was not satisfied with the set supplied by nature, heeould supply as good and cheap as any one else A large quantity of home made cloth of many patterns and quali- ties, nert came before the eye, from that to boots and shoes of neatest work. Coming to the fine art department, there were many beauties to please the eye. A large number of oil paint- ingspt' landscapes and various scenes by land and water was much admired by the spectators A large number of specimens of' halr work, were exhibited and looked very pretty. The sentiment displayed in a wreath composed of locks of hair, each of a. different kind was very beautiful. Doctor Peck showed a specimen of his Also from the clerk of Markham, notice of a grant, of $30, on the Town Line, in the Village of Stoufl'ville, on conditions that the Council of Whit- church grant, a like sum. ' PETITIONS. The several following petitions were presented and read from Jared Lloyd, Esq., and Mr. Robert Smith, load Uommis:ioners, asking for an extension 0? tinxo For nxponrling the mmmy granted on the roads under their supervision. Also the petition of Thos Cosford and 21 others, praying for relief for one Roby-t Heal, a cripple, and in deetitute circumstances. The Lords prayer in a frame, as a specimen ofpemnunship we think the most beautiful thing in this part of the exhibition. As a prize was offered for the best writing of children under six- teen, 3 number of specimens were to be seen, but with the exception of one or two, they were not so good as they mightha‘ve been. Minutas of last mceiing road and approved. Read a communication from Henry Grist, Esq, .with cheque for $41544, Clergy Reserve mbney apportiontment for 1866. . Another move brought us to the end, which was filled up with a large quanti- ty ofbrcud, cheese, hunter, honey and soap, which after all may have been the most useful things present, considering we yet require eatuble to sustain a. lile, which requires much sweeting, and soaping to make it what it should be: The above Council met at Mr. Fred- Chinn’s Hull, Stoutfville, on Tuesday, the 22nd inst., at the call of ‘the Reeve. For the past week, public attention" here has been directed some“ hat to- warda the question of the solvency of the various Banks. This if caused chief-1 1y by the unexpected failure of the Com- mercial. Confidence is however altogeth- er restored,as there is no reason to doubt. that the remaining Banks are perfectly safe. The failure‘ of the Commercial Bankis here chiefly attributed to the refusal of the Bank of Montreal, through its Manager Mr. King, to join with the other Banks in aloan on the security of the Railway Bonds, and opinions are- freely expressed that his course in the alfair lS altogether unjusti- fiable. There is a very general im- pression that the Bills of the Ctm- mercial will eventually be redeemed at‘ par, and consequently they have risen considerable in value. The price being‘ paid to day on the street being 87 cents? on the dollar The run on the Royal‘ Canadian Bank at first seemed likely to be serious, but as all demands wercl promptly met, it gradually subsided. Considerable improvements have Jilte- ly been made in the City, and the price of land, houses, &e., IS rapidly rising. November 30, 1867. Edward Pierce Pugh, Engineer and general agent of the Julia Gold Mining Company, has been arrested and sent for trial for obtaining goods under false pre- tences. It appears that the Company was a bogus concern got up by himself Seve‘al parties delivered goods to him, and received in payment cheques on the Royal Canadian Bank, at which he was suppoaed to have an account. On pre- sentment,.the cheques were dishonored, there being no funds to meet them. De~ tectives were set to work at once, and he was soon arrested, just in time to put a stop to his contemplated trip to uncle Sam's dominion. The Cavalry Schoolhero is getting quite a popular affair; a number of vol- unteer officers have recently {Walled themselves ofit, and amongst; others we notice Colonel McLeod of Oak Ridges. Farmers would do well to see to their boundary lines in the Township of Vaughan, as under the Vaughan Act it has been decided recently, that the overplus in each block must be equally divided between the various lots in it.
