Dying prafer of a. ddfâ€"Guide my bark. 'Why is the letterD like a. squalling child? Because it makes a ma mad. It is said that the “c seventgen million women,” be cen'sus ‘? ‘ A young man,‘ who is“ desperately in love, an s that he has been electrified with a go Nanic battery. A gentleman at a music artyxnsked a friend, in a. whisper” “How 3 all I stir the fire without interrupting the music.” Be- tween the bars,” replied the friend. It is stated that during the seven months loe Exhibifion season no less a number than 159,966 persons crossed and re-croased between Dover and Calais. Professor Czermak, of the University of Sena, has found in the stomach of an Egyptian mummy a roll of something which proved to be the skin of the sole of the mummy’s own feet. Investigation has shown that this was a. common practice among the ancient Eg ptians, and is ex- plained as s mboiical of the eternai separav tion of the ead from the earth, he so long trod, and as a Sign of his manumission from the thrall of the world. Some editor says that the destiny of the warld often hangs on the smallest tnfles. A little mifl' betwen Charles Bonaparw and his love Letitia, might have broken off a marriage which gave birth to Napoleon, and the battle of Waterloo. To which a contemporary adds: “Yes, that is a fact. Suppose alictle miff' had taken place be- tween Adam and Eve ! What \then ?” We learn that Mr. Dickens has refused the offer of $1,000, made by the Mechanics’ Institute of this city, for a single night’s reading. " Mr. Dickens will not read before an association. His agent Mr. Dolby, thinks it possible, however, that Mr; Dickens r 'l . . ma come to Toronto 111 Apnl or May next; an desires, and will recexve, all needful in- formation as to the necessary arrangements. --G‘lobe. - SAD CASE OF SUICIDE.â€"â€"Streetsville, Dec.‘ 3.â€"A young man in this place, named Thos. Henry, committed suicide to-day by hanging himself in his bedroom. The body was discovered suspended from a beam in the ceiling by means of a leather strap, and al. though still warm, all available means to restore animation were unsuccessful. The deceased had been for some time in a de- spondent state of mind, but no marks of in- sanity had been observed. He leaves a widowed mother who was depending on him for support. We beg to call the readers attention to the articles prepared and advertised by J. S. We know the members of the firm individually and feel sure they would not attempt to palm anything upon the public not worthy of their fullest confidence. And we feel satisfied from personal experience as well as the testimony of others that their re- parations are all they are recommeu .â€" Granby Gazette. The national. Credit of France is much inferior to that of Great Britain. The last half century has made awonderful change in the relative position of the two countries, so far as regards financiai Emits. " Fifty years ago the annual cost of the British na- tional debt was nearly forty shillings per head for every man, woman, and child in the United Kingdom. At present, partly owing to the reduction of interest. but much more to the increase of population, the an- nual cost‘cf the national debt is only about seventeen shillings per head. In France, on the other hand, the burden of the national debt is now at least 300 per cent. greater than it was in 1815. Even in spite of ~ the £40,000,000, of hard cash in the coffers of the Bank of France, the French Three per Cents, are only about 68, while the British are 94.
