Other business might come up during the sitting of the Grqu Jury, but this he did not. think at all like ly. Having noticed the other duties (le- volving on the Grand Jury, of visiting the gaol and lunatic asylum, His Honour clos- ed by congratulating the jury that, in a large and thickly settled county, such as that. of York, there should he so little crimt nal business to come before the court. A NEW DOCTRINE OF RESPONSIBILITY.â€" An amusng story is told of the first essay at diplommizingjr among)r the Yankee» by our new Minister at Washington. Before quit- ting London he met an American gentleman Whom he did not recognize as a member of the ultra-Republican party, and to whom he praised Mr. Johnson highly for his admin- istrative vigor and skill. Finding no re- sponse, he modefied his tone and said, “At all events, all must admit that he does won» ders for an entirely selfâ€"made man.” It may be so. was the rejoinder, but if he be self- made, I will say that it relieves God Al- mighty of a grave responsibility.â€"Manchcs- ter Guardian. Proposed Union of the Wesleyans and the Church of Englandâ€"A discussion took place in the late Convocation at York, which will, no doubt. excite much attention. Archdeacon Hamilton moved the appoint- ment of a. Committee to open negotiations with the Wesleyan Conference "on the possibility of a thorough reunion between the W csleynn community and the Church of England.” This proposition was supported by the Archdeacon Cal-lisle and Canon hornby; but it was opposed by the Bishops of Carlisle and Ripon, Archdeacon Pollock, and Chancellor Thurlow. Eventually the motion was withdrawn, and an amendment moved by the BishOp of Ripon, was adopt- ed, with only one dzssentient. The effect of the amendment, is that the Convocation would ‘cordially welcome any practical at tempt to efl'ecta brotherly reconcillmion” between the Church and the Wesleyans. By the Rev.
