Sm: Early last week, one of your neiglr bours brought a quantity of live fowls to market; he readily sold them and returned home. I now learn that he does not raise fowls himself, but has been collecting them by robbing neighbouring hen-roosts. He is notorious, I am credibly informed, as a sheep thief; was caught stealing grain in the sheaf last harvest; in fact, I learn that he lives by stealing at nights, and loa‘ing round the Tavern bar-rooms during day time. What are your Magistrates about, that such a notorious character can carry on his nightly depredations under their judicial noses? I am told that “Old Abe†is afraid of him, and that he is the only one thatdoes bnsmess; the others being igno- rant of their duty, and not accustomed to; harness. In the State of Indiana, the citizens have a mode of disposing of thieves, such as the one referred to, that is sharp, short. and to the purpose ; but it is Lynch law, and we prefer that thieves should flourish and grow fat, rather than copy from brother Jonathan. The worst feature of the whole is, this man had his son with him here, and appears to be bringing him up as a thief. 'It would be an act of charity towards this boy to save. him from the life his father is training him to send the old thief to the Penitentiary, and the young one to the Reformatory. and thereby save your neighbour’s hen roosts.
