Let’s have the old bend, and not have the new ' Let’s_hav:a the bend that our grand-mothers knew, Over the wash-tub and over the churn; That is the bend that our daughters should learn. Let’s havejhe bend that our grand-mothers knew Over the éradle like good mothers true; Over the table (the family round), Reading the Good Book ’mid silence pro- found. Let’s have the bend that at church they did ‘ wear, Bowing them lowly in ‘meek, humble prayer; Not sitting erect, with the modern miss air, With the “love of a bonnet” just percbe’d on one hair. ‘ Leave the camel his hump; he wears it for use ; Leave the donkey his pannier, and cut your- selves loose From faghions that lower, deform, and de~ skeins be shorng Let our garments be easy, and light to be Worn ; Don’t shake in December, and awelter in June, And appear like Unhappy one struck by the moon. Let’sdspena the time in things highér than mess,â€" Time that was given us ,to aid and to bless; Time that is fleeting ana p’asses away ;. Oh let 1‘15 work while we call it to-day 1 Let’s hive the old bend mstead of the new ; Let’s have the 01d hearts, so faithful and grade, To hide some deformity most‘of them made. Let qur‘ Heads _of faise hair and hot yarn- cgnveying than] H) l-LICII' vnuuuo uuoII-ww-v-wu after the Governmefii llgfve forward"? them by-rail to the nearest pom! {I‘Om WhICh. “P‘ plipgtions have been made by the WHO“ municipalities in more remote sections 0ft“? country. Where hands are so much required, ~comnlaints have been heard. on all sides for years past, that immigration has not received the attention it should have done ; but, of late, the Government of Ontario has come out handsomely in getting up the most val- uable information in pamphlet form, which isnow being widely circnlated through Eu- rope by their agents on the spot. The efi'ect has been that nearly 4000 good and stalwart workmen have already arrived in our midst7 and thousands of others are following. We trust, therefore, there will be no lack of' en- ergy on the part/of Canadians in mass to meet these people, and make proper provis- ion for them in finding~ employment and giv- in? them a heartvwelcome. A word in justice of‘Toronto Immigration Agency, 0n the arrival of the first lmtch ofimmigmnts at this point it may he recol lecled by acme that complaints were made in consequence ofa family, having1r the mea- sles, being comnelled to remain in one ofthe railway cars a day or two. When the fact was made knowu to the Agent. Mr. Donald- son, he at once had one of the leading medi- cal professiome men of the city to attend to them. with a proper nurse to assist in taking care of those poor children who were af- flicted with measles. It was 'nronosed to re- move them either to the hoSpilal or to other quarters where they might be made comfort- able, but their situation was such as not to admit of this, as the following certificate from Dr. Thompson will show: “J. A. DONALDSON, Esq. SIR,â€"At your request I have been attend- ing the sick children that have recently ar- rived from England. These children We're sufi‘ering from measles, two of whom have died since that time, there is one other suf- fering from the same dccease. and 1'0 remove him would greatly endanger his life” Many good husbands are spoiled in the cooking ; some women go about it as if their husbands were bladders, and blow them up, others keep them constantly in hot water, while others freeze them by ‘conjugal coldâ€" ness. Some smother them in hatred, con- teution, and variance, and some keep them in pickle'.all thein lives. These women always serve them up with tongue sauce. Now it cannot be supposed that husbands will be tender and good if managed in this way; but they are, on the contrary, very de- licious when managed as follows :â€"Get a large jar, called the jar of carefulness (which all good wives have on hand), place your husband in it. and set him near the fire of conjugal love, let the fire be pretty hot. but especially let it be clear; above all. let the heat be constant. Cover him over with affection. kindness. and subjection. Gar- nish with modest, becoming familarity, and the spice of pleasantry; and if you add kisses and other confectionaries. let them be accompanied with a suflicieut portion of se- cresy,» mixed with prudence and moderation. We advise all good wives to try this receipt. and reallze how admirable a dish a husband is when properly cooked. true. Away with all fashions that lower and ‘de- grade,â€" To hide some fleformity most of them made. Sm,â€"Now that the season of immigration is fairly upon us, and thousands of stalwart EurOpeans and laborers and others, many with capital, landing on our shores, it be- hoves us to be up and doing to make provi- sion for those people who are a source of great wealth to this growing country. The Governments, both Local and Dominion, arc doing their duty handsomely; but there is more than this wanting. Every man in the country has an interest in this great move ment, and it is all important that the heads of municipalities, both in towns and country, will assist the Government and the Immigra- tion Agentsin their operations. A cordial welcome, a kind word to those people on their arrival, has an immense influence to re- concile the newly arrived immigrant to his new land of adoption. However, this is not all that is required. Parties requiring: the help of those laborers in their different municipalities will require to exert themsel yes to find immediate employment for those prle: and not 0an that, but to assist in E-muvpvi'nu them to their various destinations. The mother, with her husband, and only one child left, are much to he pitied, and then- case is a fit subject for those with a be- nevolé‘ht spirit who would tender them a little'assistance. They are now living m a little house in Scarboro’ Village, and any donation left either at the Mayor’s office or with the Immigration Agenf, 53 York St. will be handed to themâ€"Globe C'or. How To COOK A GOOD Husmxn.â€"As Mrs. Glass said of the bare, you must “ first catch him.” Having done so, the mode of cook- ing him. so as to make a good dish of him, is as follows :â€" As sonn as it was considered advisable this child was removed with his mother to 1119 Hospital, where he died a short time afterwards.
