THE Catholic Bishop of Linz, in Austria, has» been convicted by a. civil tribunal of uttering doctrines subversive of public order, and sentenced to three months’ imprison- ment. IN New South Wales there have been ex- tensive floods and numerous shipwrecks, caused by violent storms. A. vessel with one hundred slaves has been captured and taken to Sydney. Monday night another prisoner, named William Bryce, awaiting trial for larceny,at- tempted to escape in precisely the same man ner. A bar was removed from his cell door, but without attracting the attention of the watch. He was subsequently found in the wetercloset, a locality that had become more interesting to the watch from the dis- covery of Leary there on the preceding night. Bryce had very ingeniously laid his water piggin on his pillow, and his bolster lengthwise on the bed to represent himself. The illusion was perfect, and qulte success- ful until the original was found in the water closet. Leary, the ï¬rst-named ofthe would- be jail-breakers, has an illustrious prison re- cord. Though not more than 25 he has spent ï¬ve years in the penitentiary, has been several times tried for robbery and larceny, and committd several thefts while supposed to be in prison awaiting trial. The conse- quence is that there are now six indictments against him at the present general sessions. Globe. How T0 BREAK ONESELF 0F BAD HABITS.-- Understand clearly the reasons, and all the masons, why the habit is injurious. Study? the subject will there_ is no lingering Tm; rudder of the Great Eastern, formerly worked by twelve men, new answers the bid- ing of steam machinery. tllelf escape two years ago, Leary was equally successful in breaking his cell, having removed a bar in the grated door and thus squeezed himselfthrough into the. corridor. The night watch failed to notice any change in the appearance of the cell, after Leary’s removal but looking as usual into the water-closet, found the burglar con- cealed there. It was evidently his intention had he not been caught, to attempt the re- moval of the grating from the outer window and thus lower himself into the freedom of the outer world. ON the South Australian border, in Vic- toria. where some few years ago wild horses were comparativer few in number, large herds are now to be found. A Willow near a. running brook Was drooping on a. Summer day, And gazing down with mournfnl look Upon the stream, in happy play. “Ah me i†he sigh’d; “ what merryheart Is yours. to thus, in gladsome song, Make music, and the welkin wake To laughter as you dance along 1 You must be happy, are on not ? The secret of your gla ness tell. Your face is bright as Summer skies, Your voice is like a silver bell ; And ever, from the sunny break Ofmom to droop of drowsy night, Are playful smiles about your face: Your life is music, bliss, and light.†Two ATTEMPTS T0 BREAK GAOL.â€"Leary, the Jack Sheppard ot the Toronto Gaol, made an unsuccessful attempt to break from thatiustitution on Sunday night last. It will be remembered that he escaped twice from the charge ofthe police while being convey- ed to trial. On this occasion his love of liberty appears to have been as ntrong‘. as ever, but his mode of securlng his object. was different. Leary is conï¬ned in the north west wing of the gaol, the same por tion of the building from which Ulric the United Smtes forger and his partner made doubt in yourumiud. Avoid the places, the persons, and the thoughts that lead to the temptation. Frequent the places, associate with the persons, indulge the thoughts, that lead away from the temptation. Keep busy: idleness is the strength of bad habits. Do not give up the struggle when you have broken your resolution once, twice, ten times, or a thousand times. That only shows how much need there is for you to strive. When you have broken your resolu- tion, just think the matter over, and endea. vor to understand why it was you failed, so that you may be upon your guard against a. recurrence of the same circumstances. Do not think it a little _or an easy thing that; you have undertaken. It is folly to expect to break ofi' a bad habit in a day, which may have been gathering strength in you for years.
