All night the snow came down, all night, Silent, and soft, and silvery white 5 Gently robing in spotless folds Town, and Lower, and trecless wolds ; On honles 0f the living and graves of the SNOW IN TOWN 5ND IN- THE COUNTRY u u Bead, Where each sleeper lies in his narrow bed ; On the city’s roofs, on the marts» of trade, 0n rustic hamlet and forest glade. When the morn arose, all bright and fair. A wondrous vision gleamed through the air ;, The world, transfigured, and glorified, Shone like the blessed and holy Bride; The fair, new earth, made free from sin, All pure without and pure withinâ€"- Arrayed in robes of spotless white, For the Heavenly Bridegroom,in glory (light. But, ah i not yet hath“ that blessed morn anned on our weary world, forlorn, When clothed in her bridal garments white, She shall stand redeemed in Heaven's pure light ; For, trampled upon by a thousand feet, Hurrying to and fro in the street; In the crowded mart, ’mid the city’s din. In the haunts of shame, the abodes of sin. All marred and soiled is that whiteness pure, Beyond retrieving and past all cure; The virgin snow is befouled and stained, Its purity all besmirched, profaned ; Savein some quiet. sequestered spot. Where the rush and strife of life is not; Screened from polluting dust and soot, And defiling tread of vagrant toot. The snow in the country lieth while, Dazzling and pure in the mornlng light 5 Softly flushing with sunset’s goltl, Spectral and ghastly ’neath moonlight cold; A scarce-stained path from house to barn Save this, untrodden is the broad farm ; A single track leads o’er the hill, All sounds of life are hushed and still. So, human nature, amid the strife 0f the crowded city’s turbulent life, Is marred and stained by the subtle spell 0f keen temptations, fierce and fell, That trample beneath their soiling feet Its virgin purity, fair and sweet, Till, oft defiled by sin and shame, Ila virtue is gone beyond reclaim. Yet some there are who keep unstained Their heart’s pure treasure, their lives un- shamed ; Although temptation and sin abound On every side, and hem them round, Amid the country’s sequestered life, Remote from the city’s din and strife, Temptation doth less assail the truth, And virgin innocence of youth. Yet, no condition is wholly blest ; Not upon earth find we pertect rest ; Neither in town or country is life Wholly free from sin and strife; Neither wholly pure, nor wholly vile, In crowded city or lonely isle; Only in heaven, home of the soul, Is respite found from sorrow and dole. â€"J\lew Dominion Monthly for December. NEARLY 20,000 Iinen-drapers’ assistants are out on strike in Paris. SISTER Hyacinthe has, says a Paris cor- respondent, followed her brother’s example, aud‘left the Convent of Carmelites. AT Bonny, a great battle has been fought between Ako Jumbo and Ja Ja. The fight lasted 36 hours, and there was immense slaughter. Ja Ja’s forces were completely defeated. AT a late meeting of the clergy of the Irish Church, convened by the Archbishop of Dublin, it was resolved that the laity should have the right to decide on matters of doctrine and discipline. A VIOLENT handbill was lately circulated in districts of London where the working classes mostly reside, calling on them to at- tend in tens of thousands on the day of opening Blackfriars’ Bridge by the Queen, and to let their cry be for “ Work.” THE Persian Gulf cable has arrived at Bombay in the ships Tweed and Calcutta. The Tweed, Captain Stuart, made the pass- age from the Lizards to Bombay in 79 days. The cable when laid down will form a com- lete line from Kurrachee to the head of the ersian Gulf. ' GALIGNAN! says medical statistics establish the two following points of interest to the ladiesâ€"first, that since stays have been aban- doned, the annual mortality has diminished amongst females 18 per cent. ; and second, that since the overloading of the head with chignons, brain fevers have increased 723} per cent. ' A GOOD story about poor Lord Derby is going the rounds. Some time since an ad- mirer of the illustrious Earl having heard of his'suf‘ferings, sent him a. case of white wine as apresent, with the intimation that if he would drink that and forsake all other, he would never more be troubled with the gout. The Earl having out of cmiosity tasâ€" ted the wine returned it, with the lrconic reply, “ I’d rather have the gout.” COBOURG, Nov. 24.â€"A very influential meeting assembled in Convention in this town today and resolved to petition the County Council to pass a By-Law prohibit- ing the sale of intoxicating liquors in the United Counties at its next session in Decem- ber, said By-Law to he submitted to the people for approval. The feeling of the meeting was enthusiastic in its determination to succeed in the effort to carry the By-Law at the polls. The feeling being very strong in favor of a. County Act. Committees were appointed in each municipality to carry out the resolutions. There were about seventy delegates in attendance. A \VELCOME REMEDY. A brighter future to those ladies young and fair or old and frail, who have suffered patiently and uncomâ€" plainingly day after day, withthai miserable and prevailing complaint, sick headache, or nearly as bad, the nervous headache which has racked and tortured the weary brain un- til almost crazed with the sickening pain. But, now ladies, you can get a bottle of Dr. J. Briggs’ Allevantor, it will relieve at once all headache, sick, nervous or bilious. A trial will convince you of its merits and en- able you to be happy again. This remedy can be tested free at No. 6 King-8L, West, Toronto, and is sold by all druggists. WE find the following in the Libertc: "' The Princess Royal of Prussia, daughter, (as everybody knows), of Queen Victoria, is the idol of the Prussian army. In the recent manoeuvres at Stargard she covered herself with glory in charging, on h0rseback, at the head of a, regiment of dragoons, of which she is colonel, the famous Hussars de la. Mort, who were beaten in that mimic encounâ€" ter. The officers of the regiment, desiring tO'hestow some military honor upon the in: trepid Amazon, are about to present Her Royal Highness with a sword of honor, the work of the most skilful manufacturer in Berlin. 0n the blade these words will be engraVed‘, inletterfi of gold, ‘The Dragoons of the Princess Royal, to their Colonel.’ ” ODDS AND ENDS SCOTCH CLAN TARTAN WAREHOUSE Respectfufiv invites the attention of his friends and the Public generally. in the Countiei of York and Fuel. to the following Specalilies, now in Stock, From $1,251. to $6 the ful Dress; much under regular prives.
