The following is one of the most remark- able compositions we have ever met with. It evinces'an ingenuity of arrangement pe- culiarly its own. Explanation :â€"The initial capitals spell “My boast is in the Glorious Cross of Christ.” The words in SMALL CAPI- TALS, when read from top to bottom and bottom to top form the Lord’s Prayer com- plete :â€" _ Make known the Gospel truths, OUR Father King. Yield up thy Grace,dea1~ FATHER from above, Bless us with héarls WHICH feelingly can sing, “Om-life Thou ART {bl-EVER God of Love I” Assuage our grief IN love FOR Christpve pray, Since the Prince of HEAVEN and GLORY died, Took all our sins and HALLOWED THE display, Infant BE ing, first a man, AND then was eru- cified. Stupendous God l THY grace and POWER make known; In Jesus’ NAME let all THE world rejoice. Now labor in THY heavenly KINGDOM own, That blessed KINGDOM for saints THE choice. How vile, to COME to Thee IS all our cry. Enemies to THY self and all that’s THINE, Graceless our WILL, we live FOR vanity, Loathing Thy very Being, EVIL in design. 0 God, Thy will be DONE FROM earth to heaven; Reclining ON the Gospel let Us live. In EARTH from sin DELIVER-ed and forgiven, 0h! As Thyself, BUT teach us to forgive. Unless 11‘s power TEMPTATION doth destroy, Sure Is our fall INTO the. depths of woe; Carnal IN mind we’ve NOT a glimpse of joy Rais’d against HEAVEN; in us no hope canflow. 0 GIVE us grace and LEAD {is on Thy way; Shine on Us with Thy love and give US peace. Self and THIS sin that rise AGAINST us slay. 0,grant each DAY our TRESPASS-es may|cease, Forgive om evil deeds THAT oft we do. Convince us DAILY of THEM to our shame. Helphs with heavenly BREAD; FORGIVE us too, Recurrent lustS,AND we’ll adore Thy name; In the FORGIVEness, we AS saints can die, Since for us and our TRESPASSES so high, Thy Son OUR Saviour, bled on Calvary. “PROFESSOR of the accumulative art” is the Californian term for thief. THE intoxication of anger, like that of 'the grape, shows us to others, but ludea us from ourselves. PATIENCE is genius; greatness the fruit of indefatigable labor; and success in life the result of purpose and persistent indus try. THE suggestions of conscience ought to be regarded in every case. not only because they are true, but because they are impor- tant. THE violet grows low, and covers itself with its own leaves; and yet of all flowers yields the most delicious and fragrant smell. Such is humility. NATURE makes every gift abenefit by causing us to want it. She delays that we may desire her; she hastens, that we may not weary of her. not; weary of her. BE not diverted from your WWW idle xeflections the silly world may make upon you, for their censures are not in your power, and consequently should not be any part of your concern. THERE have been many definitions of a gentleman, but the prettiest and mast pnth- etic is that given by a young lady. “A gentleman," says she, “is a human being combining a. woman’s tenderness with a man’s courage. LET your promises be sincere, and so pru- dently considered as not to exceed the reach of your ability. He who promises more than he 'can perform is false to himself, and he who does not perform what he has promised is false to his friend. A GRAMMARIAK'S THOUGHT."What a. erm- trast (here ix: sometimes between the adjec- tive and its adverb! Reflect, for example, on the wide differenre between the man who is constant in love, and the man who is con- stantlv in love! “YOU’RE no gentleman,” said a vulgar bully to an inoffensive mamâ€"“I suppose you think yourself one ‘2" mildly retorted the gentleman.â€"“ Certainly I do, said the bully.~“ Then,” said the mild man, “ I’m glad you don’t think I’m one.” IT is not high crimes, such as robbery and murder, which destroy the peace of society. The village gossip; family quarrels. jealous ies and bickerings between neighbors, mad- dlesomeness and tattling, are the worms that eat into all social happiness. no toleration of each other’s feelings, no meek submission to injuries. and no soft an- Iwer to turn away wrath. If you lay a. single stick of wood in the grate, and apply fire to it, it will go out; put on another stick and they will burn; and half a dozen, and you will have an effective blaze. There are other fires subject to the same condition. If One-member of a family gets into a passion, and is left alone, he will cool down, and possibly be ashamed and repent. But op- pose temper to temper, let one harsh answer be followed by another, and there will soon be a blaze which will enwrap them all to its burning hut. As it is the nature of a. kite to devour little birds, so it is the nature of some minds to tyrannise over little people; lhis being the means Wthll they use to recompense themselves for their extreme sei‘villity and condescension to theirsnperiors ; for nothing can be more reasonable than that slaves and flatterers should exact the same taxes on all below them which they themselves pay to all above them. AFTER all that can be said about the ad- vantages one man has over another, there is still a wonderful equality in human for. tune. If the heiress has booty for her dow- er, the penniless have beauty for theirs, if one man has cash, the other has credit, if one boast of his income, the other can of his influence. No one is so miserable but that his neighbor wants something he pos- sesses; and no one so mighty but that he wants another’s aid. There is no fortune so good but it may be battered; and none so bad but it may be reversed. The sun that rises in clouds may set in splendour; and that which risss in splendour may seLin gloom. MUTUAL FORBEARANCE.â€"The house will be kept in continual turmoil when there is YOUTHFUL CONDUCT.â€"â€"The line of con- duct chosen by a. young man in the time during the five years from fifteen to twenty will, in almost every case, determine his character for life. As he is then careful or careless, prudent or improvident, indus‘ trious or indolent, truthful or dissimulating, intelligent or ignorant, temperate or disso- lute, so will he be in after years, and it needs no prophet to cast his horoscope or calcuA late his chances in life. A. SCOTT, Librarian. WOOLEN MANUFACTURING This oil excells all others for Lubricating puf‘goses, both animal and vegetable. ,z- ALe. We are proparad to have the merits of this oil tested against all oils now being used on machineryâ€"both light or heavy; from a clock or sewing machine, to the heaviest of Steamâ€" boat shafts. The following are the points in which it ex- cells all other oils : it will not gum , hence machinery can be kept clean with but little trouble, and, it will clean machinery that has been gummed by other oils. It will not congeat or thicken in the coldest of weatherâ€"this is a quality of the highest importance. from the fact that an oil nm having Luis qualllv will not lubricate a cold shaft. such an oil may be applied in a heated state; but the moment it touches a cold shaft it is congealed. and it will not begin to lubricate until the journal, bv friction, acquires that temperature necessnry to reduce it to a liquid state. In acquiring a higher temperature by friction, the journal expands. and the box is inâ€" jured. It is as imposeiblo to use oil that will chill on a cold shaft without this result, as it is to mingle oil with water. Stocltes’ oil will lubricate the coldest machinery the moment it is applied ; it is now used in over two hundred establishments, and all unite in saying the pre- fer it to Refined Sperm, or pure olive oil: it is free from all objections urged against all 011101' oilas it neither gums or freezes.
