Last winter a movement was-"made to'iucorporate. Markham Village, a petition was handed in to the Reeve to accomplish what it asked for, he put obstacles in the way through his uncle in Scarboro,’ and the first session of the County Council rose without taking action in the matter other than the first reading; at the second meeting of the County Council what does our rceve do but through his friends again brings in Some c'ohtemptible legal objection, and the matter is laid over» again; and a special session had to be held this month for no other purpose than to pass the third reading of this bye law. There is certainly something very strange about the whole proceedings. How was it that Richmond Hill could pass the by-laW» for incorporation in two days, and for Markham Village-it should take ten months? Perhaps our old hen can answer the question. SIR: Residents living in the North-east portion of Yorkville havergiven notice of their intention ,to apply ~to Parliament for an Act to permit them to annex that portion of the village to thc‘city. It is also stated that the City Council will ask forlpowcr to extend the limits of the city, taking in Yorkville. Souwscnsa- lint: is created here in consequence of this, as also of a letter bearing upon this subject that appeared in the grit organ; some folks think it is 3 dodge to extend the wade of St. John and St. James, knowing that the grit clement prevails in the suburbs. I take it that this is not to be accomplished in a day, many things will, have to be considered, and although it may increase our taxes, which is a great bug-bear with some, a great deal can be said in its favor. Yorkville is increasing in importance as the city improves, and the increase of taxes'is a small matter. If by being annexed ’to the city' our property increases in value, new streets are opened out and macada~ mized, gas lamps are spread through the village, the toll-gates (relics of barbarism). are removed, slaughter hodses not per- mitted, and many other things too nu- merous to mention besides being a part of' the city it will give the place a pres- tige. which under present auspices it cannot have. Yorkville extends over ground suflicient for two wards, divided bylthe line of' Yonge Street, and with live men elected to represent it in the City Council it will obtain justice and fair play.
