We think that the selection of our officers should be made from men who have always shown a willingness 1n the mast tolwork for the good of the village, mother then from among those whose wihereabouts are never known until there : are oflices in view and then make their : appearance as the foremost runners in .the race. .Wc have men of substance z-and ability amongst us whose interest. ‘55 identified with that ofthe village, whose ~=cnergies would be exercised for the welv "fare of the same, and whose standing and influence would aid in carrying out such laws and regulations as they might sev fit from time to time to adopt. These men must be brought out. and their talents and abilities utilized. I)" was also presonI.r-d WM: :1. bandsan buck and an uddrcm, as a parting token of respect and high esteem. A most pleasant affair took place at Carrrille on Sunday, the 15th inst. The scholars teachers, and friends of the Union Sabbath School of that place hav- ing previously heard that Mr. Thomas Boothby was about to leave the neighbor- hood, made up their minds. to give him a I surpriseâ€"as he has been connected with the school. for about twenty years, the greater number of which he has been either superintendent or assistant superin- tendent. The surprise was in the form of a splendidly hound copy of' Cassell’s Illustrated Family Bihle.with an address. 1n the address mention was made of his faithfulness in the discharge ot‘ his dutv. and ot' the deeo regret they felt at part- ing with one who had been so diligent in attendance, regardless of' the weather or other obstacles which might present themselves. in order that he might pro- mote the interest of' the school both by precept and example. In concludingr they wished‘ him health. happiness and pros- perity, to enjov the perusal of the sacred pages ol‘ the Bible. which they had pre- sented to him and also wishing: that if it should not be their lot to meet again on‘ earth, as superintendent and scholars,l they might meet around their heavenly father's throne. Miss. Annie lC. Booth- Why not extend the distance. and run a steam ear, similar to the above. on Yonge Street. It would create local markets in every village along the route, and ‘would increase the local trade immensely. Besidesthe manufacturers of farming implements in our neighbor hood. would be able to curtail their heavy outlay in teaming from the city their coal. iron. etc. The merchants would have their goods brought to their doors, and it Would tend to the improve- ment of business everywhere. On Monday next, the 23rd inst, e citizens of our newly erected corpora- on will be called upon to nominate those antlemen upon whom they wish to con- er Municipal honors for the coming year. is this is the first time we have the privilege of electing ourmm Reeve and Councillors, we hope that every Elector Will exercise proper discrimina‘“0“» and endeavor to bring to the front such Candl' dates as will be best ‘able to run til-i“ machinery of our local government with the L (1st possible friction, and with all xzas‘onable economy, so that the result afour selfigovernment may be such that itwillnot cause us to regret the steps we have taken to erect Richmond Hill into a Municipality. ~ "In Thursdays New York papers is record- ed a verv syccessful trial of a new steam car on the Bleeker street he‘se car railroadâ€" the line havmg the sharpest curves and steepest, grades in the city. The car can run twenty-five miles an hour on a smooth, straight. track. It- has the appearance of'an nrdinary street car, and is the same Size. The machinery occupies the front platform. and is entirely separated from the interior and invisible from that point. It is provided nth a compressed engine of five horse power which may be increased to twenty horse power without tiny complicated machinery. The cylinders are under the front platform, and are indirect connection with the forward axle. A small box on the platform will rentain coal for half'a day. the consumation being at. the rate of four pounds of coal per mile. There is some talk of running a steam car to Yorkvilie, by way of Front street and Jarvis. The horse cars ai‘e certain 1y very slow, and whilst upon this head it may not be out of place to mention that this subject is meeting the attention nf the citizens of New York, as the following extract will Show: Wm 35m “ggfixlemm. They are to be assisted on this occasion by the Misses Campbell and Proctor, A. L. Willson, Esq, Messrs. T. S. Savage. Wesleyan Church Annivers- ary.~â€"- A tea‘meeting will be held in tne Wesleyan Church, at. Maple, on next Christmas Day, at. four o'clock in the afternoon, to be followed by addresses, and choice music by the choir. Tickets, 30 cents; children, 20 cents. Sermons will be preached on Sabbath. the 29m of December, as follows; at 10:30 A.M., by the Rev. Enoch Wood, D. 1)., and at 6 P.M.,by the Rev. S. Rose. Collections taken up alter each sermon, which, with the roceeds of' the tea meeting will be applied to aid the Trust Fund; done a few months ago. The city grit; organ, notwithstanding‘its articles condemning the introduction ot ‘political opinions ' into Municipal elec- tions, has been the means of bringing: out three straight grit tickets for the wards of St. John, St. James, and St. Davids; in the other wards they will try and put one or tWO such in. The Conservatives. as a body, are opposed ‘to introducing politics into Municipal matters, hence they are very careless and indifferent. as to who goes in; under the circumstances of having a wily and cunning enemy to deal with, we think they are very wrong. That there are too many men seeking seats in the Council who profess to belong to the Conservative party. and who should not be there, cannot be denied. Inquestâ€"An inquest was held on the body of Mr. William Gemmell, archi- tect, Toronto. (who drew up the plans of the new English Church, in our town) on Friday last. The jury returned a verdict of accidental drowned, while skating on the bay. Some parties give notice of applying for an Act. of Parliament to run cars to Carlton7 by way of Davenport road from the Yorkville Town Hall; every one seem to “have railroad mania.
