The Indians can see every one coming in five miles ofl', without themselves being reen- 'l‘hey can also let their pursuers come with- in a low feet of the bluff and shoot down, re- tiring, if ncCessary, to other5 similar bluffs. As to food, the Indians can find all lhey want of cattle in and around the lava b d, and can also go out in the lake in canoes to ti h or shoot game. The only thing they now lack ful‘ a lung siege will be ammunition "or their guns; but they will make arrows instead. Those pursuing will have to tollow the Indians (in foot, and in journeyin. through these gullios and crevices to hunt them mu~t expect to find the Modocs on the high blufl's above them on every point, or making their way through concealed pas- sages to secure hiding places.
