Canon Ramsay. INVESTIGATION BY ARCHDEACON FULLER. Nswusuxsr, March 5,â€"The people of this village were somewhat surprised this morning by the arrival from Toronto, of the ltev. Archdeacon Fuller and the Rev. Mr. Hills, of Markham, who had been sent by the Bishop to investigate the charges which have been laid against the Rev. Canon Rani say, on account of his connection with the so called Dodge forgery. Although they had advised Mi. Ramsay of their intention of coming today, he had kept the matter as quiet. as possible,so that there was no oppor iunity of collecting eVideuce in the matter, and had it not been that Mr. Burk. a. rest (lent here, happened to be in Markham yesâ€" terday. and casually heard that the llev. Mr. Hill was Coming uu here to day for that purpose, it is probable that what little PVi = deuce was collected would not have been forthcoming in time for the investigation. As it is. the Archdeacmi. after hearing the. evidence anl Mr. tamsay’s ovn statement. , adjourned the, investigation till some future date. in order to procUre letters and state ments which they were unable to obtain to day. The investigation was held in the vestry of St. Paul's Church and commenced at eleven o'clock Mr. McCarthy, OI Barrie. appeared on behalf of Mr. Dodge. The Archdeacon Opened the proceedings by calling upon Mr. Ramsay to explain his connection with the. matter. Rev. Canon RamSHy stated that. on the Sabbath evening prevmus to the nomination Mr. Dodge. called at his house after church. and proposed to him on account of the shin ders which have been published against his character in the Globe, that he should con cool; a letter purporting to have come from the Rev. Dr. Clarke. his former Pastor. showing the irreproachable character which he bare when in his parish in New Jersey. and asked him (the Canon) to send it to the Globe with an introductory letter asking them iii all fairness to publish it. He sup- posed Mr. Dodge to be merely joking, and passed it off in that way. Then Mr. Dodge inSisted that he could obtain Dr. Clarke’s consent by telegraph, to use his name in connection with this letter. He then told Mr. Dodge that if he succeeded in obtaining.r Mr. Clarke’s consent he would write the introductory letter. He. h0wever, consii ered the conversation to be merely a. joke, and treated it as such. He never received that letter from Dr. Clarke, nor knew any- thing about it until after the election. and even then did not wish to expose him had his own character not been at stake. Mr. Ramsay and his son Allan corrobo- rated the statements made by the Canon as the conversation which took place in the house with Mr. Dodge. Mr. Burk came forward and stated that he was in the Royal Hotel on Friday night pre yious to the election, when Mr. Ramsay came in, and after conversing a little while, picked up one of these fly sheets which were. lying on the table, and said, "Don't you think this letter of mine will do Mr. Dodge a great deal of good ? " This statement was corroborated by Mr. McOliutock, who was also in the room at' the time. ' Mr. Ramsay denied the statement, saying it was perfectly false, and that these gentle- men must be mistaken. Mr. McCarthy said he appeared on Mr. Dodge's behalf, but that he did not'desire to take any unfair advantage of Mr. Ramsay, and us this trial was not brought on at their instance he would not cross examine any of the .Witnesses unless they deSired he s‘ ould. The Archdeacon said they desiied simply to elicit the truth of these charges, and therefore he‘wi‘shed Mr. McCarthy to cross examine, soithut they might have all the evidence they possibly could secure. Every- body concerned in the transaction must be. examined. The witness’s demand was for 968.500 of which £3.000 had been paid. It struck him as utterly outrageous. What was the precise amount of the, cost of the furniture at Dunbar House? Mr. GinsSP £20000 had still to be paid. The Vice Chancellor observed that Veitcli’s-cbarge for smoking an ornamental piece of ryround of three acres with shrubs was £3,000. Mr. Bristowe said this was by no means an ex orbitant demand for choice shrubs. But the, price paid for goods was not the. question the. Court had now to decide. Various claims had been made. against the testator’s estate, and they Were entitled to ask any questions of each claimant with reference to his charge. Mr. Richardson submitted to de cross exami' ed on his own claim. but. he objected to answer questions which might affect other claimants. The Vice-Chancellor remarked that he. was agent for the purchase ofthe piano from Erard's. He no doubt got a commission for it. Mr. Rristowe said the cross-examination would be used against Erard's. they not. being present. or having any right. to be present. By the course. the other side had adopted. the examination had alreadv filled a mass of papers. and it. was difficult to see where it would 'end. The Vice Chancellor said there were two ques- tions; first. as to Whether the goods Were. ordered during the life of the testator: and secondly, what was the manor price for them. As far as the price was concerted. some l‘FSl'Pl'itll‘llP London upholstnrer should lie commissioned to look at thr- articlos and After some further. it was en mosh-d by the View Chancellor that ill“.
