MY DEAR HERALD,-â€"I have just re- turned from Vienna alter seeing the World's great fairrwhich is a trifle big- ger concern than the one to beheld in Markham Village next Week. I said I had just returned from Vienna, so I have and I tell you it is very refreshing to a perwn who has been away for months from the bosom of his family, to be at home once more. “ Home sweet Home,†how dearly those lovely words sound, and when I think of them the tears will spring.r involuntarily and bring back fond reenllections never to be erased from a persons memory until the great enemy 0! us all steps in to make a change. But I am getting too poetic-ally enthused, and must change my subject. Speaking of Home sweet. Homoâ€"how sadly I found my home where I have lived for 7 years; I mean tlte lovely village of Mark- ham, whieh was incorporated la_ ' fffer. Sadly in some respects, 3.1:"? old land marks removed which makes an index as to our future course to follow. Other changes, such as buildings &ci, hon. D. Reesor has put up a nice and very commodious dwelling, M rs M airs a dwelling house, Mr Charles Chap- man has quite broken through the old rule of brick, stone and mortar, and built a concrete which, without excep~ tton, is the best built house in the vi!- lage, and he deserves great credit for in- stituting anew era in cheap building. May his shadow newer grow less, and sell lots ofscwing machines and Melodeons He has promised to stand treat for this. In addition to these changes I found my peaceful village in a fearful state of ex- citoment about the Paciï¬c Railway Scan- dalâ€"one man said “ what need have we[ of any further witnesses, John A. has condemneddiimself, (I wonder where he got the quotation) “away with him, away with himâ€"crucify~no hangâ€"no defeat himâ€"drive him from off the face of the earth.†"As he has shown no mercyâ€"so no mercy will we show him.†I began to inquire what was the matterâ€"but this one man kept saying-â€"“ he has con- demned himself,†and I Could get no other answer. I then met a tin jeweller and asked him the news, he replied, “Ha! ‘ Ha! Ha! John has just been before the Whitewash Committee and admitted all, Ha 1 Hal Ha! You Tories are now nicely done for. That great Corrup- tionist‘s days will soon be ended. Ha, Ha, Ha. I made up my mind that Markham village had gone daft. I was not well sure whether I was sober or not or else my senses had left me. I had nothingr to drink that morning, then I thought I might be crazy myself until I met a few more petSons, when I came to the conclusion that I was “compus men- tus†and the We I met were only ï¬t for Dr. VVorkman’s care. in Torontoâ€"poor deluded tcllows. 1 then made enquiries as to what caused this mental derange- ment. It seems that on the evening of the 14th of ugust last, or a day or two , later they {’0 lowe’d‘th’e "advice of a fellow called the Globe and they went and held an indignation meeting.' in Keesor's Swamp. and the meeting was such a success. and they were so overjoyful. that it completely turned their brains. Since that meeting the Commission has been in session and the results do not tend to heal their malady. I feel very sorry for themâ€"I do indeed. Our nobl'e Senator I understand went to Ottawa on the 13th ult., expecting a call to the Cabinet, bu__§ as the Goxemor did not (as the Globe says) have a mind of his ownâ€"the call did not come. But like a true philosopher of old he treated it, calmly, and did not allow such mundane things to cause a single‘ thrill of trouble to roll across his peaceful bosom. The political horizon here is reform, but as bad as John A.. Sir Hugh, George Whitman. McMullen and Huntington may be, they feel mean when accused of “ letter stealing." that’s a. sticker for them in spite of the Globe’s Poo l Poo !! Mc- Mullen they adore very much indeed, and so do I. Many people have a han- kering after great names, and G. W. McMullen‘has consented to act as god- father to the whole lot of clear Reform children for a year. ' I am going to get married soon. Yours truly, MUGGINS, JR. In Spain the leaders of the Caratgena insurrection are said to be endeavoring to secure the co operation of the Carlists on their efforts to raise the seige of the city.
