"Bill, ‘as an index to character, there is nothing in the whole round of the “clothes 'hilosophy " at all comparable to the hat. t is the wearer’s other splf, his moral and intellectual summary. If you doubt the statement examine the hats that hang in an ofiiice. The clerks who own them are not more distinct and difl'erent from each other than are those “ beavers” which some 11n- observant people call " meaningless.” llnt No. 1 has what has been happily described as “ an unmural calm. an. lunwlmlosome gloss " about its nap; in is “ seedy,” " shabby genteel,” or whatever else you like to call it, and you can tell immediately that it be- longs to the poor clerk with the crmging , _ _ . n _ p v ‘ air, the look of want of resourcefulness, and mental spring and elasticity. The one next it has a tell tale hand of crape to con ceal the ravages of time. The top and the brim are suggestive of the application of a wet brush. But notwithstandng these things there is a cheerfulness about this erupt-ti hat, a look of"mal<ing the best." of things, Which is very different from the resigned melancholy of hat No. 1, and you may be sure that the clei-k who wears it is some (hing ofa Mark 'J'apley in his way. Then we have the unexceptional Lincoln and Bet» net, the verv tvpe of all that is respectable. It isthe responsible man, middlcaged and welHo do, who wea'i's that. hat. Next to it hangs a small, selt'assmtin: hat, one that catches the eye from the first moment of inspection. Vanity is written on the curl of its brim. and concert all over it. It sure ly belongs to tie “ smart man ” ofthe of free, and it. affords a curious contrast to its ‘ next neighbor, the solt, grey hat. It‘luccitl and unshapely, this one tell as plainly as words can do, ofgzin and billartls, debts. cheap cigars, scanty fare, and all the ac compuniments of an uncertain. shitty lil'c. Who does not. know a sportin;_r hat when he sees it? Again, there is a distinguished foreigner hat, which is eqt‘nllit unmistake able. There is another sort of hat that comes to us with people who [ resent begging let: tets. It is, above all things, an apologetic hat. The brim droops ever so slightly to- wards the auter edge all the tray round, lonking like the cares ol'a Gothic houses. The wearer gltdes into the room, his bend on one side, and, whether on his head or in his hand, the hat wears a smile of excuse. a deprectory smile. Like other and better people. the presentor ol‘ the begging letter makesugrent deal of" play With his hat, twisting it about, or coaxing and petting it, tziving point thereby to his discourse. Farm ers, as n body.have hats that are all their Own. The agricultural hat is a perfectly distinct species. 80 is the officers mnfti but; so is the hat worn by members ofany learn- ed body. The hats that go to an archteolo- gicnl meetitt", however distinct each'may be from each have a strong,r family likeness. They are remarkably toll in the crown, remarkably fluffy about the nap, and they . . I” r 4 4 . . are, in every respect, the very revorse (H' xhe hata man of fashion would choose. Like their owners. the arehmolngicul hats devote themselves to the more seriuus business of life. disdaiuing the modern and the com monplnce. ..... v . Again, clerical hats are a class apart. There are degrees and differ-mewsamtmgst, them. and a person of ohm-want huhits will distinguish at a glance betwven high und low tenets. It is next to impussilil9 lo de- fine the grades of' hats, and their relation to doctrine, but it may he advanced in a gen- eral way that the more picturesque the style the “ higher "' the Church | an. until amung the ritualistic pm'sons the chimue) pot is abandoned for a felt hat which is Cousin german to that glorious snmhrem in which artists revel.”â€"â€"Canadiqn Illustraicd News, of October 4th. [It is evident that the writer of the uhove never sojourned at iichmnnd Hill, 01' he would have bestowed a few remarks on the “White Plug ” I -â€"when perchnd upon a rumble. We have but (me, and“1hnt's a but as is a hat.”]â€"ED. The pestilence at Shreveport, where 60 per cent. of those attacked by fever diel has developed some signal instances of heroism. Not to mention the cases of" those physicians from other cities who have voluntarily sought the infected 10- cality to heal the sick, there are notice-l able examples of selfâ€"sacrifice among the citizens of the town. While a very‘ large majority of those whose means per-‘ mitted have fled with their families from the place, others equally able to defray the cxpsnse of flight have bravely remainâ€" ed to share the peril and privations of their neighbors. M any of these Gend Samaritans have died and many are new ill. If calamities so dreadful as this Shreveport scourge bring into hold relief the darker phases of human nature it is equally true that; they Show humanity in Its brightest aspects. The Chautauqua Farrch is responâ€" sible for the statement that a mother and two children on the road between Angolia and Brant have lived in a hogsâ€" head since last April. A philanthropic community must certainly exist in that neighborhood. The Emperor of Russia, at the special request of Prince Leopold of Bavaria, has pardoned the German philologzist, Dr. Pichler, Who‘was transported for stealing books from the Imperial library of which he had charge. FIRE.â€"â€"anumxm, Oct. 6.â€" Between 5 and 6 o’clock this evening a fire broke out in a large untenanled two‘story wood build- ing on Millstreet, belonging to Dr. Nash, Although a stiff breeze was blowing the two fire companies succeeded in confining: the fire to the upper story, with the assistance of the inhabitants carrying water to the en~ gines. the tank being exhausted. There was no insurance. The fire was doubtless the work of an incendiary. ON HATS List of Licensed Pedl arsand Auctioneers for County cf York. John McKenzie . . . William Bye i . . . . . .
