Pursuant to statute the Council elect for the Township of Markham, for the year I874. met at Hunter’s hotel, Unionville, on Monday, the 19th inst., and having made but! subscribed to the declaration of qualiï¬- cation of china as prescribed by law, took their seats, viz: Jas. Robinson, RceVe; John Lane and Wm. Milliken, Deputy- Iieevcs; Robert Marsh and N. Button Coun- cillors. Minutes of last meeting were read bad conï¬rmed. Mr Lane, seconded by Mr Marsh, moved that in view of the various important matters contained in the report of the last meeting for 1873, tprrcsent Reeve be and is here- by instructed to sign the minutes of the said meeting. The following petition was presented :â€" By Mr Button, from A. Vanzant and forty- one orhers, askin,,r aid for two unfortunate and Kate Bickerstsfl“, who are in deplorably des- titute circumstances. ' On Motion Mr Marsh introduced a Bylaw to appoint Auditors. The By-law was read the ï¬rst and second time. and the blanks ï¬lled with the names of Jae. Gormley and Thomas Shaw. On emotion the By-law was read the third time and passed. On Motion Mr Marsh introduced a Bylaw do appoint Assessors. Mr Leslie gave notice that he would inâ€" troduce a By Law granting aid to agricul- turnl societies. The Council adjourned at 4:35. Death of Dr. Livingstone. Losnon, Jan. 26,â€" Despatches from Zanzibar, received here, state that advices received there from the exploring party ac- companying Dr. Livingstone in the interior of Africa, announce the death of the great ,explorer, Dr. Livingstone. He died at the encampment of the expedition. near Unâ€" yambyi, after a short attack of dysentery. The death of Dr. Livingstone took place in June last. He had been travelling over a partially submerged country. after wading four days thrdugh water. was seized by ill- ness of which he died. LoNDox, Jan. 27.-At a meeting of the Royal Geographical Society Inst night, sev- eral members expressed doubt as to the authenticity of the report of Dr. Livingâ€" lstone’s death. Mr Kirk said when he left Zanzibar in September, rumors of a similar character were current; he thought the news, if true, would have been oï¬icially for- warded long before the present date. On taking the chair. he thanked them for the confidence they had reposed in him in placing him in that position, and said he would at all times endeavor todischarge his duties to the best intrest of the county. Mr Jackson moved, and Mr Phillips secâ€" onded, that when the Council ad'ourned on the following day, it should stan adjourned until Monday next, then to meet at 2 pm.
