When Alexander, attended with a gor- rgcous retinue, flushed with conquest, and ‘enriched with the spoils of empires, stood before the tub in which the bitter-mind- cd philosopher, Diogenes, about whose wisdom he had heard so much, habitu ally ensconced himself, he asked the lat- ter what he, the conqueror would do for so humble an indiVIdual as the philosoâ€" pher. - “ Stand out of my sun l" steroly and promptly ejaculated the ï¬erce cynic. The proud conqueror went away thought. fully considering the point that no man was so much a king as the man who wanted least. There can be no mistake, we all want life and truth and light. The people of Ontario want the “ light ’i’ thrown on the affairs of this Province, and will not allow a recreant and syco- phant Ministry to obscure their free vis- ion in order to cover their own delin- quincies by specious and plausible sophis- tries. The people want the records and require “ facts and figures,†which can- not lie. Messrs Rykert and Lauder seem to be the evil geniuses, the infants terrible the betas mot'r of the present gov- ernment from the energy and addressl with which they unveil the misdeeds of the Ministry. The people will ï¬nd an able expose of the present Government in the powerful address by Mr Lauder, recently delivered at Glencoe, and the in- ' attacks of Mr Rykert, on the ‘ion. Their hypocritical pro- zeal for the public service osition, is graphically con- heir reckless and unseemly they attained the Trea- a single act they de- ' ' did they re. nce @hï¬gmh gm W1. Changeoltime inking BlfeclMonday, JMyISlh 1874: The large number of delegates, from most of the constituencies in Ontario, at the Convention, opened'i'n Toronto, on “’ednesday last, indicates that the Lil:- eral Conservative Party, in this province, has still the majority. True, by false- hood and misrepresentation, many have been misled so as to give the Grits tem- porary sw.ay,but they are returning to their allegance. The conduct of these Grit rulers during the past two years has satisï¬ed all that they are unworthy and ineapable to be trusted with the country's affairs. All at all interested in the res-‘ parity of our common countryâ€"an the vast majority are loyal menâ€"will not, by their votes, permit the best interests of the empire to be sacriï¬ced. The ob ject of this meeting in Toronto is, we believe, to organize the Liberal Conser~ natives so as to have one grand line of'u action for the coming local elections; toI be prepared to have every vote polled of the friends of the party, land to place Let our Friends take notice that the “breath ot'battle is hot and near †al- ready, and let there he no apathy or flin’ching from the contest. Withal let there 'beigood'hones‘t hard work done. Our leaders are setting us a good exam- ple. They are to he found at every public meeting and upon every platform with a noble selfâ€"denial and zeal for the, public good which is already bearing fruit. Their example is worthy ofimi- totic‘n7 so we call upon all friends of good Government-to rally round them. . a ,NEW ADVERTISEMENTS. aï¬eYi’st()rgan’s-‘â€"‘=‘Vm.‘ Street. ’6 ider. The severe punishment meted out to France l by Prussia in the late war rnnkles in thel breast of every Frenchman without except' ion ; and not a few influential persons out' side of France sympathize with the French. There is generally is secret satisfaction that. notwithstanding the rough manner in which France. was crushed. after her defeat, by the rough heel of Bismark, she has so rap idly recovered her losses. Permanent pence between Prussia and France is not probable. Victor Hugo, m a late letter to thevPence Conference at.
