Wm @mh “QMMM. A superstition existed in olden times to the effect that any undertaking, no matter how great or how trivial, comâ€" manned on Friday was sure to be attend- ed with disastrous results. Numerous cases were cited, from the wreck of a ‘ vessel at sea, to the loss of a brood of} chickens which had the misfortune to be hatched on that unlucky day, and all went to show the unfeasability of at- tempting anything on Friday. \Ve can- not say whether any such superstition has existed in the ranks of the “ Reform †party heretofore, in regard to the fun- lucky day, but they certainly have, after last Friday, good reason to wish that day blotted out of the calender. It was a day that will long be remembered as proving mast disasterous to the “pair- tv.†Capt. Neelon, of Lincoln, and Mr Miller, of Muskoka, disqualiï¬ed. The rapidity with which these sketches were dashed of and the exact- likenesses brought out, elicited great ap- plause, The likenesses were especially noticeable when the gentleman commene ed ï¬guring among our “local celebrities†the audience being,r able to recognize the “physag†before the lecturer had ï¬nish‘ 0d the †profile." Mr Bengough p0- sesses the gift ofda'awing, a talent, which by the way is very necessary alecturer should have to insure success. If Mr Bengough ever honors our town with another visit we have no doubt he will receive a hearty welcome. They obtained ofï¬ce, and it was ex- pected by a large number of the electors of the Dominion who had hearc" the pur- ity cry so often, that at least the elect- ions, as far as the “ Reformers †were Concerned, would be carried on without the grosscst acts of bribery and corrupt- ion. The “ Come-along-John†system, inaugerated at London, proved very c0n~ elusiver that preaching, not practising, was the Grit forte. Further evidence has been adduced at each election trial, proving beyond doubt, to all but the most rabid Grit, that the “ Reformch †are not what they would have the peeple believe they are. When we look at the long list of self-styled “purists†who have fallen from the pinnacle to which their loud protestations against c0rrupt- ion enabled them to reach. We are forced to ask can the electors of Canada be so blind that they cannot see for them- selves that-the corruption cry was raised for no other purpose than to procure po- scssion of the Treasury benches? In the election trials so far, we ï¬nd three “ Reformers †disqualiï¬ed, and one, after having been disqualiï¬ed, granted a new trial. Only one†Liberal Conservative is recorded in the black list and he fell, not for promising “nice presents,†nor for distributing “ bran and shorts,†,uor holding out the goodness and yoï¬t of Government patronage, but for, as he swears, innocently and without knowledge of the penal ordinance, giving himself: glass of beer. Two Liberals, whose return was appealed against, were ,sustained; and nine Conservatives passed with like success through the same fur- nace. Let the voters who in times past were led to .cast their votes for the “ Reâ€" former,†in the belief that they were all pure and undeï¬led, take the catalogue Into consideration and in the approachâ€" ing elections vote against the political hypocrites who make such plausabic pre- stances under the cloak of “ Reform.†For twenty years, in which they were In opposition, the “ Reformers traded on their pretentions of purity. They won to themselves "many, who, judging be- tween the libels heaped on the Liberal Conservative Party and the spacious pretences of the Opposition, chose the “Reformers†as being ostensibly the most moral and best men to effect an electoral puriï¬cation of the country. It might not be out of place to state llere, that our villagers have not yet been educated up to the standard of etiquette which allows gentlemen to indulge in the “ fragrant weed " while attend- ing a public entertainment, and we hope that a certain “gentleman,†who seem- ed to enjoy his “ Myrtle Navy,†at the above entertainment, on Wednesday evening, will practice a little more self- deuiuldn the future.
