Mr. George Brown’s statement to the I eï¬'ect that only three thousand seven hundred dollars was subscribed by the " reform †party in Ontario towards the election_fund. has received c--nsiderable' criticism through the press in different pIYiIZOf the country. We dare venture to any that the must ardent admirer of the great “ Dictator†does not for a moment believe that the comparatively trifling sum of $3,700 was the sum total spent by the party in the elections of 1872. Macdonald, that if a committee of en- quiry was granted, he could prove that where one dollal was spent by the Con- lervativc party, double the amount was lpent their opponents. Toronto has of late been infested with I hand of young ruï¬ians, with no visible means of support, who seem to take a special delight in setting the police at deï¬ance. From the results‘ of the late outrage it would seem that} it was the police, and not the procesâ€" aionists, that the rabble wished to show their hostility to, for which the Sunday procession afforded an excellent pretext. It is, to be hoped that those implicated, now under ailrest, will receive such punishment at the hands of the law as will strike terror to the hearts of their usociates for all time to come. Queen’s Own, Governor Gen; eral’s Body Guard and No. 2 Troop ofCaw alry to be in readiness in case their assist, ance should be required in quelling the expected roit. Happily their services were not required, the police, who were out en masse, were fully equal to the situation, and succeeded , although not without receiving some rather severe bruises, in keeping the rotious element of both parties at a respect- ful distance from each other. Stones and other missiles were thrown by both parties, ‘ and from the position occupied by the police they came in for rather more than their share. and several of their number re: ceived some severe wounds, although none likely to result fatally. A large number of shots were ï¬red but without any serious rea sults. Several arrests were made by the police, to whom great credit is due for their brave conduct throughout the whole pro- ceedings, their life being: placed in jeopardy in their attempts to protect the procession- ists from the mob. Considerable exciteâ€" ment prevailed here in the evening.» owing; to a telegram received stating that a police- man had been killed and also some women and children ; on the arrival of the morning papers, on Monday, however, the rumor was found to he untrue, _ 7 - The Sunday Riot in Toronto. TEEFY, Clerk last, by wtion To the Editor of the York Herald. DEAR SIR,â€"In your issue of the 24th nlt., there is a letter addressed to me by Mr Daniel Kinnee, asking for information with regard to the moneys known as the “ Clergy , Reserve Fund " of this Township. To a letter written in so courteous a tone, 1 would not, and as one of the representatives of the township, 1 could not refuse to give whatever information I may be possessed of to the electors of the municipality. That Fund was derived t'romthe seculari- znlion of the Clergy Reserves, and was. by act of Parliament, divided pro rata among‘ all the electors in the province of Ontario.‘ This township receited. ahont twenty years ago, a large amount in that way, which has been further incret-sed duringr various years hy funds from the same source, and by the same method ofdistrihution. That sum had been further augmented by the Municipal (‘uunt-ils of eighteen or twenty years ago, by the judicious investment of the moneyin (l think) ContilV of Middle-sex Debentures, which yielded a net proï¬t of Seventeen Hun- dred and Why Dollars; so that the whole :tmODltl of the Fund amounted to morethun Twenty two Thousand Dollars. As you are aware, however. that portion of the township, includrd in the Incorporated village of Richmond Hill, received as its share the sum of Fourteen Hundred and Fifty Dollars. which has Ieduced the amount nu , J T..\t|_..m to ithout Twenty one Thousand Dollars 'l‘his sum is invested principally in City of Toronto Debentures and the interest derived from it has been, each year, by resolution of Council. divided equally to each School Section and Union Section in the township. 'l‘hnt the application of the interest to school purposes meets with the approval of the electors is undoubted; but that the present division of it is equitable is perhaps ques- tionahle. I regret to state however that the town. ship Councils in years past. instead of as- sessing for the amount they wished to expend ; during the year. had expended part of this} stun amounting to about, Eighteen or Nine- teen Hundred Dollars to meet the current ‘ expenses of the township. The Council of} last year endeavored to lay aside a sum of money to pay back a portion of that which was wrongfully taken from the Clergy Re- serve Fund; but. on account of unforseen expenses in connection with the great fire in Woodbridge in that year. we were unable to do so. This year we expect to he able to restore about ï¬ve hundred dollars, and if a similar course be pursued for the next three or four years the fund will then here. stored to its proper amount, and the Schools tofthe township will derive an increased 1 revenue.
