His sad and untimely end has cast a gloom eye; the entire neighhorhood. ' Among the many characters who have figured at the Toronto Police Court, with a remarkable regularity for a num- ber of years past, none are so familiarly know in this section of the country as Charlie Lawson, whose death occurred at his brother’s residence, 4th Con. Markham, on Friday morning last, the 4th inst, For a number of years, Charlie‘s career hadflbccn little better than that of a_ vagrantpth‘e greater part of his time being‘sfient in Toronto Gaol, and he had just finished a term of three4 months in that institution a few days previous to his death." ‘Althaugh leadâ€" ing the life of a vagrant, he was very re- spectahly connected. Report says that Charlie was, at one time, in comfortable circumstances till matters ofa private nature drove him to the intoxicating cup, since which time he has wandered about in a half delirious state. Charlie had an annuityof somewhere about 3200 left him in England, which he received in quartequ installments, with which he Was enabled to go on the ‘1‘ war path ”; until captured joy the phage.“ l'One rc-l' deeming feature in his character was, that he was strictly honorable in the3 matter: ctr-paying his debts, no matter how great or trivial the amount was, the parties might'd‘cpend on being paid, on Charlie receiving his quarterly allow- ance. On the ‘Monday morning previous to his death, he left his brother’s resi- dence with about $60 on his person, came to this village by the wayof toria Square. On arriving here, he pro- ceeded to spend ‘his money as liberal as ‘usual, and by Wednesday morning had succeeded in getting rid of his “ pile.” During his last visit he complained fre- quently of apain the region of his heart. On Thursday morning he started for his brother’s. On Friday morning, while his brother’s household ‘were en- gaged in family worship, Charlie dropped off the chair and immediately expired. An inquest was lieldiopn the body, and a post rhortem examination made ,by Dr. Langétatf. Lg‘hje medipal testimony went to show that the deceased died of heart disease, which was, no doubt, brought on by exposure and abuse. neighbors who were on the spot, but no trace of- the unfortunate man could thenvbe found. They continued their search for the body till dark when they were forced to give it up till the neat morning. About six o’clock on Saturday morning, Messrs. J. Eyer and S. M’apes proceeded down the stream in search of the body which they succeeded in finding, lodged in a wood drift about a mile and ahalf helow the mills. So firmly was the body wedged in with the drift wood that the two they found it impossible to extricate it without assist- ance. On the hody being extricated there were found two rather ugly looking wounds near the left temple, and which it is supposed the deceased received in going over the dam, and which would account for his making no effort to save himself. Dr. Eekardt, of Unionville, was notified of the circumstances and proceeded to hold an inquest. After an examination of' the body, the evidence of several witnesses were taken and a ver- dict rendered in accordance with the facts given above. SUDDEN DEATH OF A WELLâ€" KNOWN CHARACTER.
