This question is just now becoming one of serious import to the people of Canada. Messrs. Blake and Mackenzie are the architects of the present Ministry, and, judging bythe means they used to obtain power, the country has but little to be proud of in recognising them as its leaders. ' Nothing could have been more disreputable than the corrupt bargain they made with the traitor Wood, induc- ing him to betray his colleagues, even to the binding him down to speak at the very. moment they might direct. How- ever, they, succeeded, and in getting hold of the Ontario Legislature, paved the way‘for a successful attack in the Domi- niony House. Here the same tactics were pursued, these haters of coalitions had no hesitation in offering ofiice to the supporters of the Government, in order to procure its betrayal, and, to the shame of our nature be it spoken, were again successful; and Blake and Mackenzie formed a coalition with their life-time opponents calling it a Reform Govern- uncut; and the Grit party swallowed the whole thing without even a wry face. This'scemcd bad enough and the coun- try has had good reason since to curse the hour we fell under Grit rule, for never' be‘fdre were we subject to a like incapacity, extravagance, and corruption, with, as a natural conSequence, our na- tional affairs drifting along from bad to‘ worse. ,Yet still some semblance of al regard for public opinion was kept up. l Dorian was looked upon as a safe man, while there might be worse men than Fournier and Laird, although they were bad enoughin all conscience. But now these men are shelved, and We have in their place, Lucius Seth Huntington, a man with a most unenviable reputation in having been convicted of a gross 1m~ , posture, whereby a large number of people were swindlcd in a most shame? less manner. Then comes that savory gentleman, Joseph Cauchon, a man who made his money by furnishing the luna- tics at Beauport asylum, and who, for other crimes, had to resign his seat in the Local Legislature of Quebec, in order to anticipate expulsion. And now as we write, as if our measure were not yet full, another scoundrel, if possible more dangerous than Cauchon, is taken in, for M. Laflamme is the man, who, in collision with Mr. Mackenzie himself, worked up the mock auction of the La. chine Canal lots, hoping thereby to swindle the country out of half a million of dollars. In their blind greed they over-did the mock auction for a time; but Rudolph Laflammc is the partner of ‘ Lucius Seth Huntington, and when both areii Ministers of the Crown surely the Lachine Canal property can be disposed of to advantage. But M. Laflamme does not :depend on the Canal job alone for notorlety. In an important case in which he was concerned, before the highest court in the realm, he was found by the judges to have prepared and used an aflidavit knowing it to be false. Yet these are the men Messrs. Blake and Mackenzie surround themselves with to govern the country ; and we venture to say that under British Institutions no such disreputable lot were ever Intrusted with power. The fact is we suppose that both these gentlemen are getting reckless, they find their power sure and swiftly slipping away from them, and care little except to keep there craft afloat until the end of their term. Mean- while we may make up our minds to an organized and extensive system of plun- der for the next twelve or eighteenl months. Mackenzie and Blake may be persously honest, but with Huntington, CanchOnzandeaflamme inside the Cub- inet, and the Mackenzie brothers and Big Push Brown just outside, the crib- l A11 lengthy correspondence and advertisements mu 1: be received at the office not later than W esduy noon, to secure insertion the current weekbut short items of local news and adver- tisements will be received up to ten o’clock on Thursday morning. - M. THE HERALD. One Sensible Spaniard- It has been known for some time past in Havana. that Captain General J ovellar had insisted on being relieved of the command of Cuba. He is convinced of the hopelessness of any further efforts on the part of Spain to reconquer the island, and is averse to the Waste of more blood and treasure in astempting to save these districts tuat are still under Spanish rule. It has been currently re- Eorted that General Jovellar’s request ad been granted, and that he shortly would be relieved by General Martinez Campos. The Queen has conferred a pension of £100 a year on Mrs. Lane. the widow of the late Mr. Edwnrd W. Lane, the eminent Oriental scholar. lbing will be unpreventible and immense. But amid all this we have one mest re- assuring reflection, viz: that Mr. Mac- 'kenzie’s intention on entering the gov- ernment was to “elevate the standard of political morality by practice which would hear the light of day.” Were it not that these men with their associates are robbing the country right and left and sinking it into embarrasments from which it will take years to extricate us, there would be something grotesque in comparing the canting hypocrisy of their professions with the measureless proflig- acy of their action. Added to this Mills and Huntington are avowed annexation- ists, wherefore Messrs. Blake and Mac- kenzie are placing the Government of the country in the hands of men at once dishonest and disloyal. What] their motives are it is impossible to devine, the only reasonable solution would Seem to be that they themselves are deter- ‘mined on such a. course as renders it necessary that their colleagues should be men without character or conscience, men, in short, who will connive at any- thing so long as they are permitted to revel in their miserable schemes of plun- der and corruption. These men repre- sent the great Reform party, who pledged themselves to a purer administration, a wise economy and reduced taxation. In- stead of' this we have an administration corrupt to the very core, a reckless ex- travagance in expenditure and a heavily increased taxation. But we have Hunt- ington, Cartwright, Cauchon, Laflamme, Mills and Big Push, and yet the people of Canada are not satisfied, and clamor for Sir John Macdonald, 'J'upper, Tilly, Gibbs, Hincks and the like. \Ve won- der what will satisfy the people? Per- haps, however, it would be well to make some concession to the popular voice, which might be done by taking in Jerry Merrick or John O’Donohue; with one or other, or both these gentlemen in the Cabinet we think it would be perfectâ€"- in its way. “La. Independencia” of this city states that General Campos has declined the berth, and publishes the reasons he gave for such determination in a. letter ad- dressed by him to Senor Canovas del Castillo, the Prime Minister of the pre- sent Madrid Cabinet. The following is an extract of said letter:â€" Do not send‘ any more people to Cuba, it is simply sending cattle to the slaughter house. Iknow all about that country forI have had command of it, and I have carried on war there. Cuba. was lost to us more than four years ago, and any efforLs that may be made by us to restore it to our rule is labor lost. Cuba, is unconqnerable. Do you try to make an arrangement with the Independents as soon as possible and as advantageous as you can, and let us withdraw from there, for any step that may be taken apart from even this is a rashness that will cost us a. few more months of strife, of blood, and of fire. It has hitherto been the habit to re- commend in hot climates a temperate use of animal diet, and to replace it by a free use of vegetable food. This has been proved by Dr. Livingst ne, by careful observation and experiment upon himself during his travels in- Central Africa, to be a false theory. He says that among the natives the appetite for animal food is voracious in the extreme, and is not the result of a savage nature, but a natural consequence of climate , and his conviction was that for all clim- ates and under a.l circumstances, the most valuable of all food is b\ of Pencils have lately appeared the writ- ing of Which is capable of being copied, more or less perfectly, in the press. They are said to be made of a mixture of graphite, kaoline, and aniline Violet. The graphite is used in the form of a. thick paste, the kaoline in a. finely pulverized state, and the violet in the form of a. very concentrated aqueous solution. The whole when well mixed is moulded under the press W.th cylinders about four inches long and of the required diâ€" ameter. Gum-arabic may be substituted for the kaoline. Believe me, clothe yourself with all the greatness of Soul which the case re- quires! and order our forces to withdraw from the graveyard of Spaniards,in which we have failed to sustain ourselves on any ground and in any Way. Unfortu~ ater we shall leave there no momentoes of our rule except the hatred of the Spanish name which the sons of Cuba will ever cherish, and the pyramids of the victims of the avariceof a horde of shameless speculators, faithless and law- less, who have traded away the dearest interests of the country.â€"N. PATEN 'I.‘ EAVE-T ROUGH ESTABLISHED 1865. Wialiam Wald, Editér and Proprietor. ‘ LONDON, ONT. What a Foreign Prince thinks of Chicago and New Orleans The city of Chicago is unique in its way. Common, vulgar, and immoral to its very core, yet highly interesting as an object of study of the American mind and American institutions. Yesterday, for instance, we saw a party of Indian agents and Indian hunters, men through whom the unhappy savages are supplied. with poisonous whiskey and firearms and then provoked to fight, and exter- minated. Had time permitted me, I would have liked to push toward the frontiers of the Indian territory, to see for myself how the savages are dealt with. It appears to me to be one of the most decisive proofs of the superiority of our race that we have never treated the Indians as the Engl'sh once did, and the Americans still do. The Spaniards have civilized and pacified them, while the Anglo Saxon exterminated them. And they have still the cheek to call themselves the greatest colonizers in the world ! It does not seem by any means safe to frequent these sorts of places. The po- lice are utterly powerless, and everybody has to protect his life and property as best he can. Revolvers are in general use, and are carried in a special pocket in the back of the trousers. Our pal-Ly is large endugh not to apprehend any serious accident, .and we would have gone through all these nests of vice and aims: had we heard of them sooner. The ludge, who came this morning to bid us good-by, gave us additional information an the state of public mm als in this city, but said, however, that we need not- be afraid of having missed the chance of seeing gambling and disorderly houses elsewhere. He said there were plenty of them in every large city, and those of New York were conducted in a. still finer style than those of Chicago. The J ndlgo had under his arm a large basket of mrawberries for his family, and the pic' ture he presented while describing the moral condition - of this AmericanSodom is one that I shall never forget. I wanted also to see the low quarters of the city. There seems to be a. whole street here, some two miles long, and containing nothing but houses of prosti- tution, gambling dens. and drinking places. And this in not in some distant suburb, but right in the centre of the :i y. Yesler ‘ay P. and M. wont out. for I walk. and had a handbill given to them in the street, announcing that a re- volutionary meeting would take place.
