Mr Chantler at the meeting on the National policy, etc, held at Brown’s Corners. took up the question of the dismissal of the Ministry by tho ,Goverâ€" nor of Quebec. He argued that inasâ€" much :as the De Buncherville Govern- men; enjoyed the confidence of the peop seeing that they were sustained inl’arliamant by an overwhelming Inaâ€"- jority, and it was contrary to all ideas of ResponSible Gavernment. He con- demned the Governor in strong terms for thus subverting the power of the people. The Mackenzie Ministry in refusing to take action was guilty of a base subterfuge, and any one who really thought upon the matter, must come to the conclusion that their conduct: was base and cowardly. Some people might think the people of Ontario had noth- ing to do with the question, butehe dif- Political Meeting at Brown’s Corners fufiflupon that. score as he thought tha ch Province was as much con. cerned in the matter as Quebec. Mr Chantler went on to showvrhat wculd be thought Of'Ihe Governor of Ontario, if he had been guilty of the same conduct, and in strong terms pictured the result, if the liberties of the people of this Province had been inter- ferrcd with the same as had been the casein Quebec. In discussing the Na tional Policy he dwelt with satisfaction upon the fact that the Government had fulfilled the promises which they had made to the people. He dwelt upon the prosperity of the United States under protection, and under-the same system he had no doubt Canada would prosper by securing’ to herself her own markets. The industries of the country were im- proving. and he had no doubt prosperity would once more dawn upon us. Mr Badgerow had some doubt about (he object of the meeting. Having only a short time betore heard that a non- servative Meeting was to be held at this place. It gave him great pleasure to be among them as he was running as a Candidate for Pariiament. He referred to the Letellier matter, stxxting that the Premier of the late Government in Que- bee, introduced measures without the eopfint of the Governor, and therefore argued that he done what was right in dismissing them :from ofliee; and that he wasjusti’fied in so doing by the sub- sequent actiou of the people in return- ing a Reform Ministry to power. Sir John MacDonald, he fancied; would rather not be placed in the position he had been by the Quebec Members of the House of Commons in bringing this matter into Parliament. He took up the question of the National Policy, and tried to show that it would be injurious ‘to the true interests of the Country, and especially to the farming interests. He would rather have discussed Local mat- ters, and trusted before long to have the opportunity of so doing. Mr Kcefler being called upon said he did not come with the intention of taking any active part in the meeting. As regards the first question before the meeting, he differed with Mr Badgerow as to the justification of the Lieutenant- Governor Letellier in dismissing his ad- visers, and showed that in doing so he done what was understood to be con- trary to the system of Responsible Gov. ernment under which we are now placed. He believed the action had more of a political complexion than any desire to serve the people. The fact was the Dominion Elections were comingr on, and knowing the people of Quebec were somewhat dissatisfied with the then Government, the step of dismissing the Ministry was undertaken. The fact of the National Policy being carried out by Sir John »Maedonald’s Govern- ment was what might be expected after the 17th of September last. The price of farm productions had increased dur- ing the last few days. It was all very well to talk about a cheap country to live inI but if the price of the articles can- not be Obtained, never mind how cheap they were. Where did the benefit come He referred to the fact of his selling pats during the last; few days at 45 cents per bushel .as a practical illustration of peome of» fire benefits, He referred to {the sugardgtiefi, and to the benefit to 15? derived from sugar refineries being established in the country. Referred to the tax on flour and the tag; on coal, being the means of cultiyating an interâ€" Provincial trade, and building the Doâ€" minion more closely aogether, The great; advantages of a home market, he dwelt on at some ,considerable langth, the aavmg of the freight. em, being one ad- vantage to be deriyed from a good home market. Mr Gibson spoke in reference to the speech of Mr Tilley, in compli- mentary terms. £91). He believed we had as much right to do the best {or our own people as the Government of the United Sates lmd. He believed the farmer was entitled to ‘be dealt fairly with, and for that reason was glad the National POEicy was intro- ducedlmving every confidence, ultimately, that the people of the country would be benefited. [WV w»..- Dr McConnell was called upon but lexcused himself from saying anything. He'nad expected to meet Mr Robinson ,and Dr Reid, and would be glad to have at: opporfunity ofl doing so. Mr John Gibson’spoke in reference to the short comings of the Mackenzie Government. lie then referred to the National Policy, he believed it would ponfer great benefit upon the country, and would deal fairly by the farmers. Mr."l‘ait addressed the meeting, followed again by Mr.Gibson when a resolution was carried in favor of the According to an Ottawa correspondent of' a Maritime Journal, Mr Brydges succeeded in so managing the Interâ€" colonial Railway, that the expenditure exceeded the receipts, during the last half year of 1878, by the enormous sum of $458,000. Notwithstanding this‘ state of afiairs he maintained a staff of‘ ofiicials far in excess of the requirements of the line. The same authority says, that a.
