( From our own Correspondent.) Markham July 21st. 1879 This village has improved during the past. few years. Some ï¬ne residences have been erected at heavy costs. Bus- iness is still on the increase since the National Policy. The storekeepers have added largely to their supply of Goods, and decided Improvements have been made in the outside appearance. Business men claim a great advantage by having the Nippising Railway run- ning from Toronto, and the station so near the village. At the station you will see daily, at large number of Mow- ing and Reaping machines, seed drills, horse rakes, ploughs and other imple- ments necdful for the farmer’s use' I must state after looking at the machines, that the Toronto Company are taking thelead, The agent told me that he has sold forty-ï¬ve machines, also the one at Richmond H ill, over seven thous- and dollars worth. This speaks well for this enterprising company. I notice the Commercial Hotel, a large and commodious building: at the north end of the village, kept; by Mr. “’illiam Marr. This house is granted license, and in consequence has been thoroughly reï¬tted in every respect. Parties travelling would do well to call at the bar and meet the attentive and pleasing landlord, and then to the din- ing room where every delicacy of the season is provided and served up in the ï¬rst. class style by the kind landlady. Speight 6; Son, run the “Novelty Works†It is worthy o' one’s time and attention to be shown through the different work shops. The ï¬rm so far have turned out over 200 waggons. and expect to manu- facture as many more, besides the other lines in connection. It has a contract for furnishing a very large number of carts for the Northern Paciï¬c Railroad. An arbitration took place on Friday last between Mr Armitage, Baker and Mr Lawler. The arbitrators were men t of business and sound sense, and there- fore settled the dispute satisfactory to both parties concerned. A gentleman that keeps a provision store, and that had pure .ased 2t} bush. -nf' new potatoes the evening before, was very much surprised the next morning after opening out to see on the fence 'north, a number of pigeons (as he supâ€" posed) ; he ran in to get the gun, but memory charged him that he had lent 1t, He grabbled for a broom handle, made for the fence, and knocked the, Watchers off. What do you suppose the", afliieted turned out to be ?. Potater bugs Watching for the potatoes. ‘ Those learning to smoke cigars should 'be careful when the had gets dizzy Where they throw them. A young man the other evening threw one from an up stair window, and it lighted on a forty- dollar thread quilt. The servant hap 'p ‘ned to come out and prevented much “injury being done. The dooket was not very large. but we noticed that Mr. Harry Bill,Barrister,of this place was engaged in almost every case.
