MAlxgcmï¬ SECRETARY,â€"â€"WM J This Society presents two distinguishing features :â€" lsLâ€"Smailness of Cost. mid-The satisfactory security afforded to members. Full particulars obtained from Several farmers of great experience who “witnessed the Work, say that. the binding ’was done a great deal home:- than It could ‘have been done by hand. The reaper was 2driven by Mr Duncan. 21x2, who expressed himself delighted with the certainty and TBimplicity of its walking. It wasdrawn by “use horses abreast, but the work appear- ‘ed to be easy upon them. It will out and him] much more than an acre an hour with- ‘out {pushing the horses 3 bit. AND HORSE SHOERx GEO CHANTLER. Mr Duncan, upon whose farm the reaper ‘was’tried. is one of the oldest of the old settlers of York. It is nearly sixty years 'since he took up his present farm, and now at 9! years old his natural force is not abut- ed tongreater extent then would lend a good judge of men ‘to place his age at about ‘60 M65. He has reared nine children, and all mesons, except one who has been an in‘vah’d almost from birth, are prosper- ous farmers culnvaling their own land.â€" GLOBE. The binder is mounted on the old Marsh Harvester, the distinguishing teature of which Is that the grain as cut falls on a canvas, which elevates It to a. platform, where formerly it was bound by two men who rode on the machine. Now, however, after the grain is elevated it is seized and :bound 1n the twinkling of an eye. Above the elevator is a rod crossing the machine from front to rear. Falling downwards from this rod are two broad flat. pieces of “spring steel. The rod is capable of being set so that when a certain quantitv of grain has been delivered against the flat pieces of steel before mentioned the pressure causes the rod to tilt. The size of the sheaf to be bound can thus be regulated The tilting ofthe rod sets an arm going, and this seizes upon the bundle of grain and draws it forward. Simultaneously, a large needle through the eye of which the twine passes, goes round the bundle. As it comes up the twine is caught, by a littlet contrivanee to the shuttle. of a sewing machine. This ties a running bow»line knot on the twine. A bar of iron now comes for- ward, and presses upon the twine between the needle and the knot, holding it tightj against the framewmk. A knife falls and, severs the twine. another arm comes round 1 seizes the now perfectly bound sheaf, and ‘drops it gently to the ground about two feet clear of the right side of the machine. All these motions are gone through 80‘ quickly as to appear the work of magic.i The rod mentioned before as determining “the size of the sheaf can also be touched “off by the driver at will. The twine is l carried in a box underneath the centre of, the binder- The cost of the twrne for bind- ing an average acre of grain is estimated 'at 25 cents. The binder is set beforehand 'to bind a certain distance from the butts of the sheaves. On this occassion it was binding about ï¬fteen inchess above the butts, and it can be altered so as to bind =neveral inches above or below that. point. A new self-binding reaper, which binds the sheaves of grain w1th twine, and de- livers them out ot‘the way of the horses, is being tried on farms in the neighborhood of Toronto by the Toronto Reaper and Homer Company. The reaper is now On the farm of Mr Duncan, senr. 3rd con.. West York. During Friday 30th ult, and the day previous, it was being operated in a 22-acre ï¬eld of Barley, where the crop Was of such a nature as to furnish the severa ‘est possible test of eiï¬ciency. The barley varied in height from two to four feet, and Was thinin some places and exceptionally thick and heavy in others. The dead fur- rows were also very deep, and the lands Very high. so that the “going†was as uni even in parts as it could be. In places, too 'the barley had been laid flat on the ground by the late heavy storms. Notwithstandâ€" ing all these drawbacks the work was ex- cellently performed. Wherever the grain could be cut allâ€"in a few places it was‘ close to the ground and the knives passedi over itâ€"it was bound and dropped w1th the { certainty of fate. ‘i'est of a Harvester which Binds With Twine.
