Quite-an excitement was created last week,'by, the information that the tracks of a bear had been seen by some choppers in the woods on Lot 5, 3rd Con. East York. A large party started on the trail and followed it for nearly two and a. half miles, and after chopping down a large tree, in which they thought Bruin had taken up his quarters, they turned their weary steps liomeward, and all were unanimous in the opinion that bare hunting (as a pastime) was not a success ; and that the first ofncxt month would be the most appropriate time for the next one. SYSTEMATIGAL nonunionâ€"For some, time past Newmarkct has been pestercd‘;I with occasional robberies. Stores have been broken into, and various“ articles stolen, and all the” ingenuity ‘ofl our police constable lias'failed to detectl the guilty) parties. Lately. however, a man was seen going into the housel occupied by James Micks, in the middle} of the night with parcels under his arm, and suspicion was at once aroused by the circumstance. On Monday morn-- ing constable Bogart procured a search? warrant and proceeded to the house of 5 Micks, where he found a large quantity of goods, which were identified as the' property of Mr. Wm. Roche, having been taken fiom the store lately occupi», ed by him, but which has recently been‘ closed. A thorough search was then made. which revealed the fact thata systematics] robbery had been carried on for a longtime. Piles o." groceries, and other articles were discovered, and . also a large number of skeleton keys,. evideiitly'fikd” and altered to suit the, various locks in the vicinity. Micks and his son were at, once arrested, and brought up befOre the Mayor and Reeve. He admitted his guilt, and the» two were committed, and sent down for trial. Micks pleaded poveity, but as. he has had steady work at his trade asi a blacksmith. the plea was not considerâ€" ed a reasonable one. He was alwaysl looked upon as a steady, hardworking man previous to his unfortunate oscapude, and the circumstance is much, to be regretted for thevsake of his family' and friendsâ€"Reformer. m-â€"â€"â€"â€" A terrible boiler explosion took place in Buffalo on Friday last. .by which about wenty men were killed and five seriously njured. The killed were crushed intoa shapeless mass of 'flesh and blood, some being blown'across the street, and through a stone wall. ‘ 1’. Mutual & Dominion Grange 1881. W. Sutherland Taylor.
