The President’s action Will be comâ€" mended by all honest men in the States, and this country, and, it is to be hoped, Will have a good effect. It has long: been .8, reproach to the States that in political trials, the administration of'justiee was little more than a three, and in every ease, where influence and position could éount, nothing was left undone to preâ€" vent the criminal from being punished. President Arthur may be a strong poliâ€" tician, and a believer in helping friends or the party, etc., but there are acts for which the guilty must; sulfer, whether friends or not. Farm for Snvleâ€"John Langstutf. 331.000 Stock for sale.“ ‘THURSDAY NOVEMBER 30,1882. (No. 26: WhEie N2». 1274'; Volume 25. The Premier of Manitoba, Mr. Nor-- 'quay, seems to be a Ievel=headed man. In an address to his constiments, which is also rewarded as an address to the peo- ple of Manitoba, he takes a very sensible fvxew ofthc Disallowance Question, which is agitating the people of that. province considerably, just now. Many of' the (hits, up there, are actually threatening rebellion, if their ideas are not carried Lent, and the Toronto Globe has been us- ing all the influence it possesses to urge these fanatics on to breaking the laws. But then the Grits are noted for howling about rebellion when they are in opposi- tion. Premier Norquayysays the Dominion Government is justified in protecting the fond in the interests ofthe whole Domin- ion, and refers to the immense benefits which Manitoba has derived through the building of this road. He thinks the Province has a right to authorize the building of purely Provincial roads, and announces his intention of asserting that right. The 01035 is driven to the use of some strange arguments in its ctforis to deâ€" nounce the C. P. IL, and. oi'course, the Government. It says that. “in case any Steamboat company establishes a line to ‘connect with the railway at Thunder Bay, and compete with the G. P. R. steamers for the North West trade, that, the Syndicate is strong enough to kill off Such opposition in a year.” If that is the case, the Syndicate is also strong: enough to kill off competing railway lines were such 'permitted. But lhe Globe cannot or will not see that, and fills eol~ umn after column with reasons why the bargain with the C. P. R. should be broken, and our trade handed over to American railways. In taking this stand Norquay will Carry the sensible people of' his Province With him. True, he will hot satisfy the. Globe, and a lot of hotâ€"headed Grits, whose only 0lech in life seems to be to create any disturbance or break any and every law if by so doing they can get in- to power. ‘ The President of the United States has shown that in some instances, at least he will not sacrificejustice iii interest bf party friends. He has ordered the removal of the Marshiti of the District of Columbia, the Postmaster and his as sistnnt at Washington, the Foreman of the Congressional Record, and one ofthe Government Directors of the W. P. B. bu the grounds that they interfered with the administration ofiustice in the celâ€" ebrated Star Route cases. It is also stated that the District Attorney will be removed. It is pleasant to think that there is some chance of' rogues receiving their desrrt, no matter how high the office they hold or how influential they may constder themselves. He said he had every confidence that Mr. K. would make a painstaking and efficient officer. THE EXCISE. Many of the readers of the HERALD will be pleased to hear that Mr John LosgroVe, of the Excise Department, has given such satisfactim that the chief officer has appoint- ed him to one of the most responsible and important positions iu the Excise. Mr. John Coulter. of Bradford, formerly of Richmond Hill, has removed to this 'city where he has secured a splendid situation, hating complete charge of the cutting department in one of the great clothing es‘ tublishmenls of this city. Well, Mt'thodlsls are not any better than other penile. but is it not strunge, il‘this was a ieligmns question, that the Episco- palian and Roman Catholic voted the same as five Melhodists,â€"thul the prayer of the )petitioners be granted, and the tenchers ‘ ratâ€"engaged. Sm.â€"’~The cditoriul in the Liberal on “School Matters,” cuntnins some of the most contradictory sentvnces and nhsmd statements that every app: med in a news-- pn; er, and which should not. be paSStd by without comment. It must be borne in mind that the editor of the Liberal, signed a petition requesting tho Board of Trustees to t'e-engage the teachers in the Ptrb‘ric Schoots at their present salaries, and at the meeting of the Board where the petition was presented, he spoke in favor of" it. In the Liberal of last week he tries to mttke it appear that this petition was not worthy of the attention of the Board, and then again he says that the Board are moral- ly bound to respect the opinion of those whose servants they are. He says that t1 petition from over eighty ratepayers is not to be ignored, but that, h‘dd it been ignored he would not, although one of the petition- ers, have found fault with the Board. To the Editor of the Now‘ what do such ':.tntements mean ? Any man that signs a petition doclures by doing so that he dtSll'GS to see the course pursued, which is advocated in the petition. If he does not so desrre, he is putting his name to a falsehood. He is misleading the persons to whom the petition is addressed, and is unworthy ofthe respect of honest. d: truthful people. He says, intro- ducing denominatinnalism is n bane to the cause of God, and so eloquent does he wax over this great evtl, that the reader would almost think he had a spécial misston to remove every bane to the cause of God. He plainly gives his readers to understand that the petition was gotten up by Metho- dists. and signed by Methodists, and then he says there was no necessity for‘ doing this, “as a glance at. the denomin‘mionalism of the members of the Board will show,â€"three l’tesbyterians, one Episco4 palian, one Roman Catholic, and seven Methodisls. N0 HOUSES.â€"â€"The bachelors in Beav- erton complain that the reason why they do not get. married is because there are no suitable houses to live in, and the Sutton Times says the same grievance exists in that town We are rather scarce of houses in Richmond Hill, but our young fellows are made of sterner stuif. Houses or no houses, when the girl names the day the wedding cake is ordered and the minister requested to hold himself in readiness to tie the Gor- dian knot. A married man is frequent- ly seen hunting a house, and confounding some of our capitalists for not building a number of cottages to rent, but this thought never seems to bother wouldâ€"be benedicts, judging from the lame number of marriages which have taken place in this village and neighborhood this fall. We are now informed that there is not a vacant house in the village, and several comfortable houses are wanted, at least parties have made enquiries of us, if there was such a thing to he found. Whether the houses are wanted by mar- ried men, or young men contemplatingi marriage we are not genie: to say just‘ now. It would pay to build a number of houses, somewhat similar to those câ€" rected by Mr McNair at the north end of the village, and it is surprising that Iz' " {some ot'our taintalznt's it; 139-, :n 2.1 .‘iny: Tm: TRANat‘i‘.â€"0bservntions of the transtt of Venus, on December 6th, will be taken in Canada at Winnipeg, Whitby Belleville.
