Tnnssumc .-â€"Mr James Robinson did a big- day’s threshing last Monday, of fall wheat, but the yield was not nearly so good as last year, it only averaged about twenty bushels of wheat to the acre. OATS THAT R Cal‘sâ€"Mr. Dan Lundy, of Pine Orchard, lot 27, con. 5, Whitchurch, has a field of cats that stand 6 feet 2 inches high. and on examining one head it was found to contain 164 kernels. Mr. Lundy is roted for such crops. â€"va . Tn: Cuties-Farmers generally through- bufuarkham and Scarboro are wall pleased with the crops, which, if this fine weather continues, will be fully one fifth above the Int-age. Hay yielded fully fifty per cent. above the aver-ave ; full Wheat isthe poorest of any grain, except the Scott and Amber varieties. which are good and will average .18 bushels per acre ; spring wheat in gcnch al will be a good average, about 14 bushels .t' sure, though slightly midged, except ‘ _ ild Goose, which will yield very heavilyâ€" 20 to 35 bushels per acre ; barley has all been housed In capital condition, and is No. I inquality ; oats will yield very heavily ; potatoes are a very poor crop, having been inttacked by rot ; apples and pears not more than halt'a crop, but enough for local con- sumptiou. I. --m Speech by Sir John Macdonald. , When the Press Excursion arrived at. Fraserville, near Cncounn. on Friday last, Sir John Mucdonald said he could address the company as an inhabitant and a pro- riystor in Riviera du Loup. lie had be- tiitzcd for many a summer to the Province Of'Quebec, and hence his Liberal friends wou‘d\readily understand how it was that French influence had unduly swayed him filming that time. (Laughter) He used to Every much irritated, when he was a younger man, at the assettion being made that he was sold to Lower Canada; but. he had-gut oyrr that since thenI because he l has now a Frenchman belonging: to Lower Canada. [1e had been afraid that even in his Old days his subjection to French lllilll-l onces "light result in his being ousted from the position he occupied ; but he was reas- sured by that day's proceedings, because he found that his friends, the members of the Press from Ontario, were now all under the home influence that he was. (Hear, hear.) he hoped that his Ontario friends who had thus been capturedfiuring their visit tn"llr’e’l Trr-vince of Quebec. wou‘d stay captured. 'I‘hr-re was. thm in the lowerSt. Lawrence country,’_‘a large, happy, and contented popu- lation-a population governed by religious and moral influences. He (Sir John) had Mn charged with being very much attached 10 the French people. In the some way! his decrrased friend and colleague, Sir Geo. E. Cartier, had been charged in the other "all of the province with being an English- man. Those who were Opposed to that I tentlemnn in Lower Canada called him an Englishman, governed by John A. In Western Canada John A. was governed by George Ettienne. In his (Sir John’s) opin- ion the loyalty of the French-Canadians to the Crown. to Canada, and to existing in- stitutions was most marvellous ; and he had not heard for many years a more just and eloquent tribute to that feeling on the part of the people of this province than had inst been expressed by his friend the Rev. Dr. 'llewart. Ho (Sir John) recommended the Ontario Pressmen to try the eli‘ect of this climate by residing; for a short time on the shores ot'the St Lawrence. Nowhere did he himself find a climate which had such a testorative effect on his constitution as that where he was now temporarily sojourning. He felt sure that reunions of this sort must be productive of good, When they found men of education and intelligence thinking differently from themselves they would say : "Perhaps we may not he so entirely right after all ; perhaps we should not be so ex- treme in our opinions; perhaps we may compromise.” He believed that undrr British institutions we must compromise. By moderation, and by the honest use of their intellect by the workers of the Cans- dian pressâ€"- by that jpdicious moderation which is the characteristic feature of free discussionâ€"political freedom would grow and expand in this country.
