A tale 0?}: terrible struggle with disease and death which has been silently and herorcully Carried on by at small band of devoted physicians ll) a quiet country neigh- borhood in Canada, and which was only revealed by the request of a member of Parliament for ti return, should not be al-- lowed to remain buried in a blue book, but should be brought to the ligh’t and placed high among the proudest records of a proâ€" fession noted for its devotion to the lessen” ing of human suffering and the cause of science. The conflict of which we purpose giving some slight. account was waged: per- haps is still being waged in the little county of Bolton, hitherto noted chiefly for the strawberries which its simple pastoral people so largely cultivate. A couple of years ago the pen le of this country adopt- ed the local prohibition law. called the Scott Act, which forbids the sale of spiritu» dos and malt liquors. except for medicinal purposes One of the provisrons of this act. a provision which we have some reason to believe was not popularly understood, required that the druggists who were licens- ed to supply these liquors n3 medicine on the prescription of u phy.iciun, should keep a record of the name of each person who presented it DIESCI'lDliOH. the date, the quantity and kind of liquor prescribed and the name ofthe physician who gave the prescription But for this provision oi'tho law. the heroic conduct of. the physicians concerned would have been unknown to the world. Heroes are always modest and no doubt they would have preferred obscurity, but the public will insist upon their being made prominent. and we hope also their being justly and suitably rewarded. Thel reemds were required from the druggists, and being asked for in Parliament those that were ready were brought down and printed. and it. is from these that the story of the terrible experiences of the people of Balton is drawn. The disease which at" tacked the people was ofa most, deadly type and couid only be fought with spiritu- ous and malt liquor. Doctors Sutherland. Williams and Urquhart. stood shoulder to shoulder in (lskVille ; Doctors Freeman, tianny, Webster. Roe and Tod, in George-- town, while Doctor Lowry stood almost alone and unaided apparently in Acton. Front Burlington and Milton the returns have not. been received, so the tale, as re- gards these places, must_ remain ul)!0l(l,, and the heroes unlmovt‘n for the present. i [ii Acton and the neighborhood the disease appears to have been of a comparatively mild type, and to have yielded, or at least been subjected. to mild and persistent treat- ment. Between the beginning of May and the end of December, 1883. Doctor Lowry prescribed about 30 gallons of brandy. gin and whiskey. in about two hundred and fifty quantities of one pint. Upon only a few tamilies did the disease get a firm hold, in most cases the medicine being given npâ€". parently as a preventative. A serious case was that of Mr. Nixon, who was Ordered a pint ofwhiskey on May 10th, a pint each of brandy and of whiskey on May 26th, a pint‘ ot'gin on June 16th; in the next month Mrs Nixon was taken ill. too, and was ‘ordet-ed one pint. of gin on August 17th. and Mr Nixon 11 bottle of porter ' on the 30th. September was abad month. Mrs Nixon being ordered a pint of brandy on the 3nd and 24th, and Mr Nixon a pint each of brandy and whiskey on the 5th and one on the 10th. On Nov. 3rd, 23rd and 28th. Mr Nixon was prescribed one pint each, and on the 3'd ofthe following month James Nixon had to have one pint of gin; rn th‘e_5lh Miss Nixon one pint of brandy. On the 14. 22nd and 24th Mr Nixon was prescribed the‘ same quantities. Doctor Lowry had several patients, whose illness proved quite as- stubborn, such as the McPliedrons. the GibbonsI the Mas-- sales. Doctor Lowry's "favorite prescrip- tion” in bad cases was a double dose," one pint each of brandy and of whiskey. Ten of his patients were thus “treated ;" we use the word in its medical meaning. of course. In Georgetown, where Mr Geo E. Morrow ltept the ‘liqiior dispensary, the number offamilies attacked by this mysu tesious disease was not large, but the type of the disease was of the very deadliest. judging from the treatment which was of . the most drastic description. A DEADLY msmsa wmcn DEMANDS mmmc mannzx’râ€"rfirswuxs’ anscamxoxs -â€"ALL FOR “Mnmcmn” PURPOSES. During the eight months for which the returns are given the four physicians gave prescriptions for over one liundied and thirty-eight gallons of spiritsâ€"mostly whiskey and lirundv, with a dash of gin ocr- cusionally. 0f the whole amount it up" pears that twelve or lhirteeti fumilies got about two--thirds. One man alone got at least twenty-one gallons or more than one- seventh of the whole quantity. This man. James Cttiii, was “taken down" in the early part of May nnd culled iii Doctor Freeman who p ascribed one quart of whiskey on the lZlh Seven days later another quart was prescribed. but the patient continued getting worse, and only an interval of Eye days elapse-d before he Wits prescribed three qnui’ts more by the Salt-e doctor. Four days later he was pro-- scribed un-ither quart, and theisafter ..l-- moat duily one quim was needed to. sustain this mnn's system. Notwithstanding every effort of his devoted medical man the patient continued to sink, and on the 27th July. it became necessary to him a consultation over his case apparently and Dr. Roe was called in. After a thorough diagnosis of the Case Dr Roe appears to have approved of Dr Freeman’s treatment and to have de-- clnred in favor of continuing the treatment, but even more drastically. for in addition to Doctor Freeman’s prescription of a quart Doctor Roe prescrith a" second quart on the some day. When Cain did not get one qiinrt he got. thereafter twoor “ a quart or more " or simply " spirits ” or "whiskey," no quantity being mentioned. the doctor’s intention being that the patient should take as much as he could sbsor'b‘. If Cain did not recover his health we are not told, but if he did not it must have been the fault of the whiskey being too diluted and not of his physicians, who were assiduous in their atâ€" tention: and generous in their prescriptions. The records of Doctor Roe’s patient, Mrs Bull. of Doctor Ranney's patients, McKinaa non sud Stull, whose attacks were periodical but severe. are extrsordinary ones. Doctor Webster proceeded on a. new course of til- lowing the patient to decide how much he tought to take. his prescribed for Mrs ‘Leslie " a. lot ot'brandy ” and for Mrs Cross " whiskey.” 0f the three places for which we have retums, howevemhe town of 0ak~ ville suffered most. It appears from the returns that during the eight months 957% gallons of'spirits and 295 gallons of malt liquor was prescribed in this town mostly by three physicians It would seem from the returns' that Doctor Sutherland preu Liscribcd over 440 gallons of spirits and 137 it gallons of malt liquor, Doctor Urquhar1258 lgallons of spirits and 68 gallons of malt liquor, and Doctor Williams 248 gallons of The' ' spirits and 89 gallons of malt liquor. remaining doctors, five or six in number, appear to have doiie little or nothing in the way of fighting this terrrible disease which amounted to a plague. The worst case lof one “ Williams " who was prescribed 9 lquarts in May. 11 in June, 12 or 13 in July, L 8 in August, 10 in September,9 in October, 13 in November, and 15 in December. , O’Shaughnossy who was attended" by all three of these leading physicians, was pro-- Doctor Sutherland had to deal with was that Are pleasant. to take.
