Mus Dmc‘ am much planned at The Queen’s Birthday was celebrated here in a very quiet manner, the largest part of our villagers going away to different parts to spend the day as would be most enjoyable to themselves. The Railway was well patronized. Qnite a number of our villagers who were left. at home} "(under the management of Mr Chas. Hollingshead,) got up a little Pic- Nic 0n the fair grounds. and the youngâ€" sters enjoyed themselves nicely for a few hours. A game of Base Ball was also inâ€" dulged in by a few ofihe larger ones. The Scott Act is the principal topic of the day just now. A meeting of the Scottites was held here in the Temper-â€" ance Hall on Friday night last. It was discussed,â€"0f course only on one side;â€" and to the surprise of the audience,.ably defended by the “noted” proprietor of the Inkerman Hotel, of our village, who made a stirring speech in favor of the Act, and is going to support. it through thick and thin. A few moments afterâ€"V wards, however, he was dealing out; the “oh be joyful” and raking in the Shekels. I suppose there are a great many hypo-â€" critical Ways of getting along in this wicked world. (Is this one ? ) Mr John McClure, whohad the mis- fortune to have his leg broken some months ago, and was amputated a short time af'terwards at the foot, is not getting along,r very well, the affected part having been Ianced several times since. A law suit will come off shortly between he and Dr. Grant, the damages claimed being $5,000. ' The woollen mills are being repaired, and when finished will make quite an improvmnent in the appearance of the old building. Quitea boom in (he buildihg line here this season . 8th avenue takes the lead. A steamboat express train is run daily between Toronto and Owen Sound, which makes'the trip one hour quicker than the regular train. It arrives here at noon, Court of Revision here Monday next. Division Court was held here on Friâ€" day last. but of short duration. Busmess gnncrally seems to be good and the farmers are prophesying z bountiful harvest. Wifeâ€"What’s the matter_ now Jnhn. LAIRD O’COCKPEN Woodbl'idge‘ May 27th, 1883. (From our own Correspondent.) The Band Picnic which came off hero, on the thl)‘ was 1m immense affair, there being between 1100 and 1300 people on the grounds during the after-- noon. Big: crowds from “'oodhridgo, Bolton. Klienhnrg, Nobleton, King: and York Township were prosent. Very little wrangling or vain disputing was indulged in» A few, nlittle “tipsy,” came around towards evening. but not seeing many chances to fight soon left for home. A great number of‘ snmshups took place during tlm day, all through carelessness The Band bars are proud of their succpsn. The "Painter" on Sunday was enquir- ing around for the loan of a gun, and on being asked what use he had for a gun, he said that a great many things were to be seen, around at a late hour. Under the circu1nstanccs,the cam-Mayor’s son obliged him With one. The Painter says nothing of any importance has been seen since. The Picnic wound up with a speech From the Painter who thanked all present (especially the good looking girls) for their patronage, and hoped they would again visit Toston on the 24 of May, and enjoy themselves as they all seemed to have done on (he past. Queen’s Birthâ€" day. Three rousing cheers for the Painter, and three for the Queen brought the Picnic to a close.
