An "..election will in all probability soon come off in Lennox. Mr. M. W. Pmynf‘lms been nominated in “IQ Com nervatii‘é‘quere‘st,‘ and Mr. Allison the former member in the interest of the Ileformers. A close contest may be ex- pected ; which ever side wine, we la‘ cy,_ Lh'ere will not be much to boast of. Mr. Allison was unsegted on account of hril‘e'rj‘by his Sripgmricrs, If the Conservative Party had been guilty of doing the same in the matter of making way for a follower ofthcirs, as has been the ease of' providing for a member of the Commons in the person of Mr. Wheler, late M. P. for West Ontario, who has lately been appointed to a position under the Ontario Govern- ment, what a cry would have been raised. How the columns of the Reform Party would have tecmed with conâ€" demnation of such aproceeding as the idea of a Local Government contracting with the Federal Government for one of its supporters to resign his seat with the prospect and promise of being rewarded by the bestowal ot' a fat posiâ€" tioa. We admit the circumstances of the appointment of Mr. Wltcler for givâ€" ing way so as to allow M r. Edgar to take his place as Member for West Onâ€" tario in the House of Commons is some what d.fl'erent, nevertheless, it is con- trary to the notions and writings of the Reform Party that there should be any collusion with the members ol one House with the other. Those horrible fellows, the Tories, may have done the same and even worse, but then. you know, the bad example set by the Tories, should not be followed by those who on all occasions were very ready to ï¬nd fault and point out how wrong the act, and how degradu ing it was for public men to make trafï¬c of their positions and inadvertenlly ot' the people. What appear to he the facts of the case: Mr Blake. the Op- position leader in the Home of Com- mons, was desirous oi';_vettin;.r Mr. J. D. Edgar a seat so that he could assist, him in the House Mr Eâ€"havinu failed on various occasions to ï¬nd a sit. Mr M owat was appealed to. He promises Mr. “’heler, who at this time represents West. Ontario in the Dominion l‘arliamentthat if he would retire he would give him a berth under the Ontario Government. Mr. lVâ€"does so, and is appointed Bursar at the Central Prison. Mr. Edgar taking his place as M. P. for West Ontario, not without a good deal of Opposition on the part of the Re- formers of that Riding, and it may be just possrhle that on the return of tie present. Member to appeal once more to the people, he may, in consequence of the evident buy and sell bargain tnade ot' the Riding. ï¬nd stronger opposition raised to his candidature than he did at his iast election. It may be said that this is not thoo’nlyrtime the same thing has been done. In the person of Sir Richâ€" ard Cartwright, a seat was provided for him in Huron. We must say we do not ï¬nd fault so much with this kind of thing, and, dear knows, it is bad enough, but we do ï¬nd lault with the pretensions made by men that they are better than their neighbors, and at the same time. are ready to do the same thing they condemn In others, and, perhaps, even worse. The Globe is ever ready to call the Conâ€" servative Party corrupt, and it has even gone so far as to say that Sir John Mac- donald " rules a corrupt people by corâ€"‘ ruption.†t Going South, East. and West, at . . . . . v . . . . . It is in favor of forming the present Maritime Provinces and Newfoundland into a new Confederation. It Is at the old story about the manner the Lower Provinces were induced to enter Conâ€" federation, antl of their subsequent treatment by the people of old Canada. It cannot be thought unworthy of men- tion that a certain amount of remedy for the unnecessary amount of expense at present incurred, could he found in the three Lower Provinces uniting in one Legislature, saving the expense of at least two-thirds of the present cost of running the several Legislatures of the different Provinces by the sea. If Union is strength, surely it would he better h be united than to be as they are at pres- ent. It is useless for them to expect to be allowed to separate from the present system that forms the Dominion. United together they could have more inâ€" fluence, more power and demand more constderation from whatever Government may rule at Ottawa. The times are propitious for considering the subject of a. union of the Maritime Provinces, and we hope to hear that steps have been ‘talten with that end in view. It is only a few weeks ago since our' Clerk had to register 'the death of Mr. Hardies' two children that died in a few hours of each other, and he is called upon to perform the same duty again. of three deaths that happened in the space of twentyâ€"eight hours. Our village was thrown into a state of excitement on Saturday evening last, between four and ï¬ve o'clock, by the sad news that Mrs. Thomas Nye had passed away from amongst us. The tidings of this very sudden death had not reached the busiâ€" ness part. of the village before word came from the Inkermau Hotel, that old Mrs. Haysteud had also departed and joined Mrs Nye on her journey. It seems that Mrs Nye was as well as usual on Wednes~ day last. but towards evening she was taken ill with inflammation ofthe bowels. Medical aid was at once called in, and the disease checked as every one expect- ed up to Saturday at 1 o'clock, when a relapse took place, and she breathed her last. Mrs. Nye was the wife of Mr. Thos. Nye. one of Mr.‘ Abell’s employees for over 26 years, and only 3 years ago Mr. Nye bought the property of the late Mr. Robert Hall on Clarenco Street, and in the summer ot'1883, built a ï¬ne brick house on this property and expected to live corrrt‘oi'tably for a number of years together, that is. if' we take age into con- sideration. Mrs Nye beingr only 49 years of age. She leaves two daughters, aged 17 and 24 and one son, aged 21 years. and Mr. Nye to mourn the loss of an affectionate wife and a kind and loving mother, and a good neighbor. Tire funeral that was largely attended, took place on Monday, at two o’clock. from his residence to the English Church cemetery. The funeral services were con" ducted by the lie-vs. Mr. Ford and Mr. Shortiss, English Church ministers. The sympathy ot the whole village is with them to help them to bear the loss of their be» loved one.
