They keep the nuisance in existence. No dccen't candi- date wants to canvass if he can avoid it, and certainly no decent man when nominated for oflicc should be compelled over the last year’s Carnival number of, the Iliarih‘eul Star, the issue running up nears quarter of ‘a‘ million. We do not hold ourselves responsible for the opinions of our Correspondents. The Way To Do It. “We notice by One of the Toronto papers that it is in contemplation to establish Smelling Works and Rolling Mill at Sydney, C. B. The Municipal Council of Cape Breton has unanimoust voted to guarantee five per cent. interest for twenty-five years on $100,000 bonds or stock, and to free from taxation for a similar period. The promoters propose to invest $800,000 in ii. Mill that will employ 1,000 men and consume 150,000 tons of coal annually. They say the iron is in such close. proximity to the coal that it can be manufactured cheaper than in any other part of tlic vrorld. The Local Government will also he asked to guarantee five per cent on $300,000 for twentyâ€"five years. But the Quaran- tee of this 8400.000 is not be used unâ€" til after the promoters have invested $400 000 of their own money. If this scheme is carried out it Will be one of great importance not only to Nova Scotia, but also, to the other parts ofiho Dominion. The introduction of $400,- 000 of Foreign Capital to be invested in a legitimate undertaking will be of great importance and assistance to trade. The situation of establishing such Works cannot be beat, and we cannot but think the scheme will succeed if honestly and carefully werked. Cape Breton Island is situated at the eastern extremity of Nova Scotia mostly between lat. 45° and 47 ° N and Inn. 60° and 61° W. EXtrtiiie length from north to south 100 miles; extreme breadth 85 miles The first settlement in this Island (which i'as united under the same Government with Nova Scotia in 1819) was lltllde in 1712 by the French. It had been tlichvcrcd by Cabot in 1497 The Island is very irregularly shapedbeiv g: triangular, and is greatly indented vritli bays. Its proâ€" ducts ai‘e marble, granite, limo stone, gypsum, salt. coal, etc Of coal the de' posits are in extent of not. less than 120 square miles. There are also rich dcâ€" posits of the best iron ore and cold. Louisburg, C. B., has one of the fittest harbors in the world being 200 miles nearer Europe than Halifax. and as a coaling depot it ought to be unequalled on account of the cheapness of coal, the coal only coming: abom $1.25 avton at. the pit mouth. Cape Breton is diâ€" vided into four Counties, Richmond, Inverncss, Victoiia and Cape Breton. Sends 8 members to the Provincial Leg- islature and 5 to the House ofCommonsr; population in 1881. 84,500. ’1' he Sydney, C. B., Coal Mines are prov- erbial for their execlleut quality whoreâ€" cVer the coal is used, and the haibor is one of the safest and surest in the world. “'0 will be very much disappointed if the anticipations of the promoters of the scheme are not fully realised.
