The davs between now and electionl ‘ day are becoming less. The time when the elections are to take place will soon ‘ 1 be here and every one who thinks the 3 country has been beneï¬ted by the policy '1 of the Government of Sir John A. Mac- '} donald, should do everything possible to t. ensure a victory to the candidates who i v support him in that policy. We gave» in last week’s paper statistics from one i ‘ Province in the Dominion. showing how improved has been the trade in that one 1; Province, and it is but natural to suppose it the same has taken place in other secâ€" tions of the country as well as in New? Brunswick. The vast increase of busi~ i; ness in only ï¬ve years was most marked . and satisfactory. We read day after day in the papers opposed to the Govâ€" ernment of Sir John M acdonald, articles pretending to show to what extent the expenses of running the country are now to what they were when Mr Mackenzie held oï¬ice. To this we can but answer, with every conï¬dence, that no man who is fair minded in his views, will for one‘ moment object to. and that is as that country increases in wealth, increases in extent, increases in population. the inâ€" crease of the “expense of running the same must be more. Every one of our readers no doubt remembers that memâ€" orable day in September. 1878, when the Government of Mr. Mackenzie was defeated at the polls, and what was the cause of his defeat it may he asked. Was it that he was found fault with in the amount of money expended in run- ning the Government? No. but rather that he had not the conï¬dence of the people; Cartwright, his Minister of Finance, could help the country only so far as a fly-onâ€"thevwhcelâ€"policy would help it. The Americans, our next door neighbors, were flooding our marketm with their articles of manufacture which were interfering with the labor of our; own people. Mr. Mackenzie, when he was appealed to. would or could do nothing, and the only help for the coun- try was in a change of Government. So the change was brought about ; the country obtained conï¬dence, our busi- ness men ventured and extended their business, the people once more were hopeful for the future. The Hon. Mr. Mackenzie is now running for Parlia~ ment for East York. The people of that riding are being appealed to in his behalf on the plea that the Hon. gentle- man should be returned to the seat beâ€" cause he is in bad health and that he is an honest man, and we might add be- cause he was ï¬ve ymrs in power in (Mr tawa and during that time proved a failure. On the other hand. ï¬ir John TRAIN TIME. 'A. Macdouald has been successful in governing the country. He has given us a policy that has ilé‘iptd the manufacâ€" turerand the mechanic. he has built the Canada Paciï¬c railway and given communication from the Atlantic to the Paciï¬c, he successfully contended with a rebellion in the North “Wet. and brought the same to a successful iSsue and instigators thereof to punishment. The Hon. gentleman is now in his seventyâ€"second year and appeals to the people of the Dominion for the last time to return him once more as the Premier of' the country Is he deserving of this conï¬dence? Has he worked so well and so faithfully that he can with conï¬dence appeal to the good feelingr 01‘ his coun- trymen to place him once more at. the head of affairs? We hope, We trustI his appeal will not be in vain. Secession in the east must be put out. With Mr. Blake to the from our esteemed friends in Nova Scotia hope to accomplish their ends. Are the electors of Ontario? Are the electors of West. York desirous this should be brought about? We call upon them to cast their ballots marked for N. 0. Wallace, a man and a gentleman who has faithfully served them and who is willing again to go to Parliament to do his best for the good of his constituents. The Montreal Gazette 'forecasts the result of the election thus :â€"“ British Columbia, the North-West Territories and Manitoba electing ï¬fteen members will send fourteen to sustain Sir John Macdonald; Ontario will send a majority of not less than ten and in all probabilâ€" ity ï¬fteen to twenty; Quebec will do better than in the late Provincial contest; New Brunswick will return more than two to one Conservatives; Nova Scotia at the worst will contribute a majority ; and Prince Edward Island will certainly declare as emphatically for the Govern- ment as ï¬ve years ago. We make this prediction not as a hapâ€"hazard one. but from information gathered from every section of Canada. in not a single Province will Mr. Blake be able on February 22nd, to count amajority of supporters. Nothing. indeed, is certain in this life but death and taxation, but. ifs third surety can be had it is the continuance in oï¬ce of the present Gov- eminent.†Wu: ajnrk 3mm. Richmond HIII. Ont.
