JOSEPH H. HALL. B. GRENNAN. Indications point to a grand Drill here d iring the month of' flowers. The total number of military organizations whi(h have up to this time made arrangements with regard to entry and transportation is 226. Theso are divided among thirty-six difl'erent States They comprise one brigade. nine regiments. sixteen battalions and 145 companies of infantry: one battalion,ï¬t'teen light; batteries and five machine- gun platoons: in artillery; six cavalry companies. seven zouaves, thirteen corps school cadets. ï¬ve regimental bands and three drum corps. One of the important occasions of the Drill will be Governor’s Day, when the chief magistrates of the different. States repre- sented will review the troops. President Young. in reply to the address at" welcome made by the Commissioner of Education. (Mr. Webb ) said that Wash-- ington was rapidly becoming America’s educational Mecca. Referring to the Bureau of Education he mentioned that it was inaugurated by a bill introduced into Congress by Gen. Garï¬eld more than twenty years ago Its work had been a good one. but there was much yet to be done, as there were now over six millions of our people who could neither read nor write. He said the inspiration of Congress seemed to be millions for defense but not one cent for education. and that the people would see that the three leaders in the last. Congress who were instrumental in amothn ering the Blair bill, should remain at home after the next election. It has been decided that the contemplated carnival which was to have lwen held here at the conclusion of the great National Drill in May, shall be postponed until October. The reason for the change is that there would not be sufï¬cient time between now and the time of the Drill to make the prt‘paratlflns necessary to carry it out on the magniï¬cent scale proposed. October, however, will be u delightful month for such a di‘lplay. It is probnble that the New Orleans Mardi Gras materinl will ï¬gure in the procession. The headless Treasury Department still rema§ds intact. but before this reaches you a new Secretary may be named. The last of Secretary Manning’s belongings have been taken from the building. and although both he and Treasurer Jordan are crossing the Atlantic. their resignations were not to take effect nor the vacancies to occur until the first of April. Many ofï¬cials of the Department with whom this period of ans-- pense has dragged, hope that Mr. Fairchild, the Assistant Secretary, will be the new Cabinet ofï¬cer. The large convention held by the lend" ingz educators of the Country was to be found at the National Museum. Probably no visitors who could come to Washington deserve a warmer welcome than the super- intendent and teachers of the public schools Many of' them prodded Congress vigorously for its neglect of educational matters, and especially for its responsibility in the defeat of the Blair bill. Cure for Group. Prompt, relief to prevent suffocation from line accumulation of tough muoousâ€"the formation of false membraneâ€"and the con- slriclion of the air passage. is necessary in case of a sudden attack of croup. Hagâ€" yard’s Yellow Oil should be used at once, afterwards Hagyard's Pectoral Balsam. E. R. Y. CONSERVATIVE ASSOCIATMN. â€"The annual meeting of the East York [liberal‘Conservalive Association was held at Webber’s Hotel. Unionville, on Wed-- nesday afternoon, 91h inst. Mr John Gibson who efficiently occupied the position of President for many years asked leave to retire and nominated ' T. Williamson' 0t" Markham. That gentleman was unsni-- mously elected President for the ensuing year. Mr W. S Robinson was elected Secretary and Vice-Presidents were op»- pointed in the various townships of the riding. Four members of the association were expelled by vote of a majority on the charge of their having voted and used their influence against the nominee of the party at the recent election for the representation of" East York in the House of Commons. There was a large attendance of' members from all parts of the riding --7'clr'gram, They are from all parts of the country. And of all sizes, ages, and deseriptions, from the daintin dressed dude to. me coarsely c‘ad, thorough going rough business man. Many of the prominent, widely known rail. road men were present. a sufï¬cient number of whom to identify the organization, while some of the old faces were missing- The President gnVe them a special reception in t‘xe East Room and each member was in“ dévidunlly introduced to him. A Good Motive. Harry Ricardo. of Toronto. agent. for Fine Art Publications, states that he was an lruubled with denfnnss for eight years that he could smrcely attend to business, until he tried Yellow ()il. He desires to make this cure known, for the beneï¬t of others afflicted. (From our Own Gerreapondent.) During the past winter Washington has had as many as six national organiZations sitting in conVention here at the same time. This week it has onlytwo, namely, the National Department of Superintendent-e, and the National Association of Passenger agentsof the United States and Canada. Probably a jollier body 'of business men never assembled in this city than these representatives of railroads who have been tenderly discussing baggage rates and olher kindred matters. A. SHARP GRANGER.â€"-On fair day a farmer who lives near Breslau brought a load of pork to the city. He had ten hogs on the load, and Mr McHardy purchased the lot. In weighing the load the farmer played a sharp trick. He put the ï¬rst hog on the scales, weighed it and then slid it down at the end, per-- mitting one of its feet to continue to rest on the scales. The other nine were then put on one after another, the ï¬rst hog’s foot helping to make each of the others weigh well. The load was de- livered, and Mr McHardy paid the amount of the Market ticket. Shortly afterwards the hogs were reâ€"weighed and were found to lack 125 lbs gross of their weight when sold. The trick was then discovered. On Saturday the farm- er was again in the city and interviewed. After some trouble he was made refund between six and seven dollars dishonest- ‘ly obtained through his sharp trick.â€" Guelph Herald, Are you disturbed at night and broken of your rest by u Sick child suflcring and cryng with 1min or cutiing teeth ‘2 If so, Send at 01100 11nd get u, bottle of Mus WmsLow‘s SooruxNG SYRUP mm CHILDREN TEETHING. ADVICE TO MOTHERS Few can form an adequate idea of the statistics of Patent Medicines in general, but the history. or rise, progress. and press- ent state of one of themâ€"we mean ROI-- loway’s Pills and Ointmentâ€"may be con-q sidered one of the most interesting episodes 1 of modern civilization. Nothing appears easierâ€"no mode of business seems readier at handâ€" than the establishment of a Patent Medicine. Only a slip of paper is.req.uired, with a preseription upon it, and a few drugs. Such is all the general public think neces-q sary; and so a great many have-tried the thing over and over again to their great loss and huge disappointment. True,‘ a Patent Medicine only results from I. pre» scription written on a piece of" paperâ€"but then the thing must prove itself worthy of the conï¬dence of the public. and its verdict depends upon the efï¬cacy of the medcine â€"in a word, its success in the cure of dis- ease. Fortunately, the rise of the far-â€" famed Holloway’s Pills and Ointment was like that of a Napoleonic ideaâ€"a design that nothing could withstand in its march towards universal conquest. When Mr. Holloway, some forty years ago. spoke to the principal of an eminent ï¬rm about bringing outs Patent Medicine, the old gentleman shook his head and asked Mr. Holloway if he had any money. "Yes." was the reply. " Then you had better keep it,†rejoined be. In spite of this dis-- couraging hint, however, Holloway. con-- scious of the importance of his great dis- discovery, knowing that it was not merely a slip of paper with a prescription upon it, but something destined for a great future, persevered against all opposition. and very soon discovered that not only the entire British public, but all the world, were ready to support him in his great design of doing battle with disease in every form. and with the most efï¬cient weapons. although Only in the shape of simple Pills and Ointment. ‘ The progress of this Patent Medicine was not slow, 0n the contrary, it was com- mensurate with the greatness of its object and its all powerful eflicacy, and as for the present state of Holloway’s Pills and 0int-- ment, according to the statistics of Patent Medicines, we may truly declare that it is astounding. It may sufï¬ce on the present occasion to point to the fact that the numâ€" ber of druggists and medicine vendors throughout the United Kingdom with whom Holloway is connected is over fourteen thousand, and that not one of them would remain for an hour without a supply of his Pills and 0intmeut.â€"The Philosophical Advocate. A New Yark Company with a. capital of ten millions of dollars has been formed to develop the iron mines of Ontario, and certainly there is plenty of room for the energy not only of such a corpora- tion as the one proposed, but of half a dozen others like it as far asthe plentiâ€" ful supply of iron goes. There i more iron lying about the rocky districts of Ontario than anything else, there .t-re hills, islands and valleys of it. Reci- procity would beneï¬t in this matter by giving us a good market. The Story of Hundreds. In a recent letter received from‘Mr Sarah A. Mills. of Whealley. Ont., she says. “I was a sufferer for six yeairs with dyspepsia and liver complaint. My food did not eli- gest, and I' grew weaker every day. I lost appetite and had a little hope of recovery. I tried many remedies. but all in vain, till I took Burdock Blond Bitters. No one need now be at a loss if they should unfortunately suffer from piles. ulcers sores. umours. boils. bruises. sprains, &c. Enveloping Holloway’s medicines are very intelligible printed directions for using them, which should be attentively studied and immediately followed by all who resort to his treatment. Sooner or later the suit- erer will assuredly triumph over the worst diseases. This searching Ointment dis-- parses all those mnlignans humors which aggravate diseases of the skin, prevent the cicatrizntion of ulcers, and excite inflow-- matory tendencies in the system.
