Askett, Peel, ()m. '4 The second of July was the day for the celebration of Dominion Day in Richmond Hill and proved a good one .hut not up to what was "expected. People from all around the surrounding souutry. among thein being those who in ,times past ,had made this their place of abode. were presâ€" ent, which made the day seem like old times when Richmond Hill was booming. Early in the morning: the people \vme at work" making: ready to welcome all Who kindly loaned their patronage to the welfare of the societies who worked so l'nillifully in making the duy one to be enjoyed and long remem- bered The Young Canadian Lacrosse Club did all that was in their power to make their part of' the program enjoyable. Foot-hall,huge-hull and lacrosse matches were played. The first to arrive was the Gormley toot-hull teum and what to do with them was a question the iiinnagers did not know how to decide. their heing no other team to compete against them, and they did not want to give them the prize without, having some fun over it. In the meantime one or two had been at work to get up a “scrub teum” to play against them and after a long hunt and hard coaxing they managed to get enough together and started the ball a rolling it was soon found [out that the visitors were the best players. but for ateani that. have the name} of thethest kickers around these parts they. bunnotkick a little bit. The home team was composed of men such he never played before and did not know when they were kicking the right way, the visitors had more p-actice which gave them the advantage hut they had to work hard to get a game which they managed to do after a. long struggle This, added to the already weuk- ness of the Scrubs. completely knocked them out. and two more. games soon fol- lowed with one for the Scrubs. leaving the score 3 to l in favor of Gormley, BA SIG BALL. The next to he competed for was the base ball. Tliornhiill oluli made their ap-i peamnee on the field with the Stars ol' Richmond Hill as Opponents. THE GARD N PARTY To give any lengthy report of the garden party. held on Mn Crosby’s beautiful lawn, on Monday evening by the Young Ladies of the U. M. Church, will only he repeating year by year the success that always attends these gatherings [got up by and carried out so successfully by them. The party held on Monday night was aided by a fine and beautiful day. and the place where it was ho'd cannot be bettered for position and beauty in the country around. More than 600 people, itis reckoned, enjoyed the oc- casion. An arch at the entrance of the grounds was decomted with flags. 0. large tent farther up was set apart for the dispos- ing of ice Cream and temperance drinks with confectionery. Over the lawn tables were placed. waited on by the young ladies ofthe church, who showed by their atten» lion adesiie to please all who patronized them. Strawberries being the principal article with all the good things necessary for a good feed, were there in abundance and to spare. Some of the boys getting so much that they so far forgot themselves as to throw about cake etc. as if it was nothing but dirt. May the time come in l which they will regret hwving so acted and behave better for the future. The house of Mr. Crosby and the trees on the sides of the lawn were beautifully decorated with Jan-- terns and the motto “This Canada of Ours” hung over the entrance to the building. The fire works at the end was worthy of the two gentlemen who superintended this part of the evening’s entertainment and when we mention the names of John Jr, William Sanderson all will understand success at- tended their efforts to please and delight ithe crowd. We cannot close our short and imperfect sketch of the afl'air'wnhout specially mentioning the name of Miss Ida Simpson, who personated “Itebecca” at the well. We do not know that We should have ottended if it had not of been to see how this part of the programme was to be carried out. We were well pleased and no doubt with the assistance of Mr. A Wright many thirsty souls were made hanpy at the lwell. The R. H. F. B. But the wicked Tories hang on to power just the same. Since Febauary, 1887, no less than seventeen victories have been won at the polls by the Liberal»Conserâ€" vative party. fFive constituencies have been wrested from Canada’s traitors, while innumerable clap trap devices have failed to induce one place to for- sake its allegiance to the Government so “bly led by Sir John A Mapdenuld. 'I'ftlERElhns been a good deal of discus ‘siou lately in railroad circles in reference to the time [when the railroads .began :burning coalginfitead of wood in their locomotives. Investigations shows that the New York Central initiated this movement. in l858.' In that. year six locomotives were run lbetween New York and Poughkeepsie, using coal for gener- zzting motive power, and two between l’oughkeepsic and Albany burned coal. The superintendent at that, time, Mr. A. F. Smith, reported that. it cost but one~ fourth as much to drive the trains by coal as it did to drive them bv wood combustion. This investigation shows that a train of' twenty one freight cars, in making a trip from Poughkecpsic to New York and back again, a distancenf lei-1 miles. six and five~cighths cords of pine wood, costing $40.15, were con- sumed, while to make the same trip‘ with a coal burning locomotive only 4,198 grounds of coal wereconsumed, costing $1048, and that it reouired unly 89AM worth nt' coal to drive an ext,» press trggin Ffrom New York to Foughâ€" km-psis and back again. " As regards one other point, on which a good deal has been saidtâ€"the alleged check to commercial enterprise because the Government have been paying four per cent. for savings bank deposita~it would be noticed that all the banks Show large in- creases in deposits compared with a few years ago, and than they are holding enor- mous sums on which they pay no interest." The excess of deposits' proves nothing except 1115!. the times have been dull. No- body denies that the banks have plenty of mnney now. It is when activity sens in, that the banksfind their energies paralysed by the Government cqgnpetion." The paper from which we elip the above may be astonished to learn that, the reality of the four per cent. interesu allowed by Government is practically, and has been for years, unobserved. Inâ€"- usmueh as, whether it is to lessen the labor to Ehe Government elerkslor other- wise, but the fact is ifa deposit is made on the 2nd of any month, or any part of a month, interest does 'not. carry until the first of the following month.
