WEST TORONTO JUNCTFON BOARD OF TRUSTEES.â€"-â€"The York Tribune thus pokes fun at the gentlemen who form the Board of trustees of‘Wcst 'l‘oâ€" ronto Junction :â€"â€"“ Our School Board met on Tuesday evening in MeFurlane’s Hail. Four members were present; just enough to form a quorum. These were Bros. Is‘isher, Homer, Stewart, and Ulendenan, who had strolled in one after the other at their leisure. Bro. Armstrong kicked because he hadn’t been pi‘opei‘iy notified, while Bro Ray-- bould was busy at the stock-yards, and therefore he could not come in time for the meeting, but showed upjust at its close armed with a railroad lantern hop» ing, no doubt, that he would he on hand soon enough to shed a little light on some of the misty questions which upâ€" poured to be beyond the mental vision ol'seme of the brethren at the previous meeting. The time for the meeting to begin was eight o’clock, but, the chair- man remembering the hopeless minority in which he found himself on the last occasion, and probably expecting his opponents were still after his scalp, stuch niny until lhelust minute in order to discourage them, on the prim» ciple \imt “hope deferred inuketh the. heart sick.” A NEW BOOK.â€"“ The book ‘ Robert Elsmere ’ sfibrds a capital illustration of the inj ustiee done to Canadian inter-â€" ests by the present postal law. This book is issued by a New York House at 50 cents. It is also issued by a Toronto House at the same price. A dealer, say in Hamilton, can order the book from New York at a charge of only one cent a pound for postage, not one particle of which goes to the Canadian Government Butlet him order from the Toronto pubâ€" lisher, and he has to pay 4 cents a pound postage. Why, when one comes to think it over, such a \thing as this is nothing more nor less than a direct inâ€" eentive~aetually offering the Canadian house. This is far too serious a matter to be any longer overlooked, and, in the name of Canadian interests, we again call upon the Postmaster-General to have immediate steps taken to put an end to this injustice,”â€"â€"Tho Canadian Book-- seller, POST OFFICE Carmaâ€"The enumer- ation of postal mutter posted at New- market last week shows considerable in- crease over the corresponding week of last year, there were no less than 1,532 letters, 640 postcards, (319 books, eirâ€" culars and newspapers (other than from the offices of publication), 75 free letters and 45 registered letters. On account of the Toronto Exhibition it is a bad week to count, because it does not give the average, business people and the public generally preferring a personal interview while in the city to corresâ€" pondence through the mail; but the week for counting is set by the Postâ€" master- General so as to be simultaneous all over the Provinceâ€"Era. NIAGARA FALLS.â€"â€"We give our readers today from public documents in our possession a description of a visit to Niagara from ujourml of Captain Enys, 2. ill Roy'mcnh, dolor} July ‘8“), 178;”; The description will be found very roadâ€" able and interesting and as some folks like to refer back to film early history of the country we trust they may derive pleasure from its perusal. He thought special at- tenlion should be given the work among them. A. collection was then taken up in aid of the Union, after which the meeting closed by singing “Pmiw God from whom all blessings flows.” Rev. W. 1“. Wilson, of Toronto. then addressed the meeting. He said he was very glad to be with them again and speak on the subject of temperance. he spoke of the great good resulting from these Unions, showing the progress made during the last quarter of a century. He said if we want to win we had got to get beyond prayer and preaching, we had got to carry the temperance movement into politics. If we want our prayers answered we have got to make a law that it is illegal tor a mm. to sell liquor. If we don’t work shoulder to shoulder for God and home we never will succeed. Now there was a law all lowing men to sell liquor, we have not to take that law away from them. He was proud of Unnndu for her commerce, for her education, for her statesmen, etc., but she allowed a. man to sell liquor. They had tried to win through the church and press but failed. We have got to mark our ballot temperance every time. He said i" man voted against home and family he wu not worthy the name of mm). if we toll on we shall win for we have God and truth on our side He then took his seat amid loud applause. Rev. Mr. Rutledge spoke at brief of his admiration of the W. U. '1‘. U. He was pleased to liear the Secretary’s report and glad to learn the Union had extended their work away from home, among the sailors and lumberu cu. ll‘lmuglxt it a good. way to reach tin-3m through literature, as they thirsl for knowledge and study what ever they can get. u. u The dilTerent officers were then called upon to read the reports of work done by the Union during the past year which. showed a large amount of work undertaken the results of which were exceedingly er:- couraging. We are sorry space will not permit us to give each report in full. The President then addressed the meeting in a few well selected words, thanking them for the favor they had bestowed on her the past; year by choosing her as their Presi- dent. Spoke of the good she had received by being a member of the Union, and hoped that. the work Would be continued with greater illnterest during the coming year. FIFTH ANNUAL MEETING. Mr. Simpson, and reading of annual reports interSpersed with music by the Methodist chair, was given. The audience was fair but we are sorry to say, not as large us it, should have been. Union was held in the Temp In t 1 The Toronto Industrial Exhibition, which closed on Friday last, was the best ever held. The attractions this year far exceeded those of previous years, the Viennese Lady Fencers and Siege of Sebastopol being exceptionally good. In the machinery building there were no ,great inventions but yet the genius of mechanics in this department was not at a standstill. The quality of' the stock and horses showed that On- tario has much to boast of in the pos- session of good blood and breeding, and that the efforts of those interested in the ,high development of horses and cattle ‘have already had no inconsiderath sue- lcess. Among the prize winners in this ‘line we notice the names of Thos. Read. Victoria Square, 3rd on two year old gelding; John Palmer, Richmond Hill, let on brood mare with foal by her side, also 3rd on single horse; A. Marsh Son, Richmond Hill, let on stallion two years old; John Bone, Edgeley, let on filly 3 years old, and W. Foster, Hum- her, 2nd and 3rd on same. The gate receipts this year amounted to $539,604.- 70,an increase over last year “$8,534.15. On Monday, Citizens’ day, the receipts amounted to $13,270.55 and on Wed- nesday, Farmers’ dav, $11,627.45. We think the managers are due great praise for the way everything was managed, the only fault being: there was not near stable room enough and many animals which arrived late could not he admitted.
