A SUGGESTIONâ€"The able and gifted lecturer, Principal Grant, has been lec- turiog in Hamilton and other places upon Imperial Federation. We notice by the Toronto papers that on Tuesday night he lectured before a large and select audience at Association Hall in that city. We confess that we should like to hear this able man upon a topic that should interest all British born sub- jects, and we throw out the hint to the Mechanics' people to obtain his services to benefit the funds of the institute. FUNERALâ€"The funeral of Mrs. Munshaw, who died at. her daughter’s residence, Dovercourt Road, Toronto, on Sunday morning, was attended to the burial ground in this village by many relatives and friends of the deceased on Monday. The Revs. Mr. Percival and Simpson read the burial services at the grave, She was long a resident of this place and vicinity, we believe for the past sevenly years, and was 89 years FIRE.-â€"â€"â€"On Sunday morning last, about 1} o’clock, the residence of Mr. Wm. Thomas, of Oak Ridges, together with all its contents, was destroyed by fire. The flames had gained such head- way before being discovered that it was impossibie to save anything. The cause of the fire is a mistery as there had not been anyone home for a few days. ANNIVERSARY SERVICEs.-â€"-The anâ€" niversary services of the laying of the corner stone, which were held in the Methodist Church last Sunday, were largely attended, especially in the even- ing. Rev. W. R. Barker, of Streetsâ€" ville, preached two excellent sermons, in the morning from Matt. 6th and 25th. and in the evening from 1 Peter, 2nd and 17th. The choir sang several choice selections during the services which were exceedingly well rendered and in harmony with the subjects of the sermons. The evening service closed by singing “ God Save the Queen.” LECTUREâ€"Rev. C. 0. Johnson, of Bolton, will deliver his celebrated lecture on the subject of “ Influences,” in the Mothodisn Church, Laskay, on the even- ing of Friday, May 3lst. Ken- tucky turfmen disagree, like doctms, as to the effect color has on speed and bottom, but a preponderancezof opinion seems to be in favor of dark bay with chestnut as a strong second choice. The Arnhs have curious theories on this subject, some of which appear in the following anecdote. taken from a recently published French book: Ben Dyar, a renowned chief of the desert" happening to he pursued one day by Saad.ei,ze,m.';, turned to his son and asked: “ What horses are in front Of the enemy Tl “ White horses.” replied the son. “ It is well; let us make for the sunny Side and they melt away like butter." Sometime after Ben Dyer turned to his son and said: “ What horses are in front of the enemy ?" “ Black horses.” cried his son. “ It is well; let us make for stony ground, and we shall have nothing to fear. They are the negroes of the Soudan, who cannot walk with bare feet upon the flints." lie changed his course, and the black horses were speedily distanced. A third time Ben Dyer asked 2” “And now what horses are in front of the enemy '1 " Dark chestnuts and dark bays.” “ In that case," said Ben Dyar, “strike out my children, strike out' and give your horses the heel, for these perchnnce might overtake us, had we not given barley to ours all summer through. SPRING EXHIBITIONâ€"The fifteenth annual spring exhibition of the Rich- mood Hill and Yongc Street Agzrieul~ tural Society, will be held at the Park Grounds, in this Village, on the Queen's Birthday, when an extensive list of premiums will be offered {or competition. In the line of Horses, prizes will be given for Imported Draft, Canadian Draft, General Purpose. Carriage, Roadsters, Blood, Span and Single Carriage Horses in harness, and Ponies ;7 Durham, Grade, Jersey, Hol‘estein, and Hereford Cattle ,V CotsWold, Leicester, Southdown, and Shropshire Sheep; Swine of all breeds; Poultry of every description; Farm Implements, Dairy Produce; Harness and Leather Work ; Ladies’ Work ; and Dogs, The latter will be a purse of$9 given for fancy dogs any breed. The Brass Band will provide music for the occasion. The Society have engaged Messrs, DorenWend & Dickie, the celeâ€" brated Star Gytnnasts, of Toronto, to give exhibitions during the day on slack wire, trapeze and acrobatic acts; and also, Mr. Chas. Munro, late of Scotland, Queen’s Medalist, with his enchanting Bag-Pipes, assisted by Maudie Saunder- son and Jamie Barry, infancy costumes, will enliven the proceedings of the day by entertaining music and dancing. In the evening a grand concert will be given in the Masonic Hall, for which the Soâ€" ciety has secured excellent talent, both foreign and local, particulars of which will be given on programmes. The Society have done everything in their power to make this the best spring exhi- bition ever held in the county, and it is expected that the list of' competitors will be Very large. Don’t fail to attend, This recalls the venerable rhyme that every farmer’s boy learns as soon as he can talk : ‘ “ One white fool, buy him: Two while feet, try him; Three while feet, look well about him; Four white feet. go without him ;" Yet some one calls attention to the fact An interesiiug discussion is going on con- cernng the proper color for a horse, wriles ‘ SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT. â€"â€" We thave made arrangements with Dr. B. It is necessary that you mention this paper in sending for the “Treatise.” This offer will remain open for only a short time. WEST YoRKsâ€"By report of meeting which was held at Weston on Saturday last, it will be seen that the nomination of the meeting was unanimously given to Frank Turner, Esq ,C.E., of'_13raeondale. Whilst Mr. Turner was quite willing to accept the nomination if given to him, he was also equally willing to assist to the best of his ability anyone Whom the convention might prefer, It will be noticed that Dr, Orr, rather than put- the fietifinxfitewtrouble of taking a ‘ ballot, made way for Turner and preâ€" ferred that the meeting should unaniâ€" mously accept him as its choice. The} Doctor, no doubt, will have the assumed ‘ sympathy of those who care little about him or his party and who also will on. deavor to make capital against Mr. Turner on the presumption that the action 0F the Doctor on this occasion was forced and not honest on his part. M r. Turner, if' our memory serves us, was nominated at the time M:xjor_Gray re- ceived the choice as Uandidate for the Legislative Assembly some years ago, and although he then did not succeed, nevertheless, he worked hard for the election of the Major, and it is fair to assume did his share towards the sucâ€" cessful issue of the contest at that time. Mr. Frank Turner has served the people in the capacity of representative in the Township and County Councils, and we believe, satisfactorily. He is well known‘ throughout the riding and popular with all classes, and we have no doubt, if for'l tunate enough to be elected, will make a good representative as he is a man of practical knowledge and we think has the ability to intelligently represent the honest yemncn of West York.
