RUNAWAY.â€"-Last Saturday our vilâ€" lage experienced a little excitement for a few minutes over a runaway horse. Mr, Harry Hopper, one of our enterprising butchers, was going his rounds as usual, when in the act of waiting upon a lady on Yonge Street, his horse commenced to “move on.†He called after it. but not feeling inclined to “listen to reason†it quiekened its pace and went tearing up Yonge at high speed. When oppoâ€" site Mr. H. S‘anderson’s residence it ran into a tree: overturning the wagon, and depositing the lovely roasts and boils upon the clean sod, Here it; frightened another horse, which was tied in front of the drug store,so badly that it made a de~ termined effort to seek refuge in Sanderâ€" son’s sanctum, but, fortunately, immediâ€" ate aid prevented this disaster. After breaking loose from the wagon M r. Hopper’s horse kept on the sidewalk for a considerable distance when it met three children whom it ran over without doing: any further damage than searing them almost to death, and then sudden- ly halted at its own door. This latter part. was done so quickly that the wagon wheels were still moving at a good speed of their own accord. The wagon was considerably damaged and parts of the harness injured, but nothing further worthy ol‘ note. Aomoumnam. HISTORY or BRITISH COLUMBIA.â€" It will be gratifying to our readers to know that the History of British Co- lumbia, by Hubert Howe Bancroft, un- til recently sold only with the complete set of this author’s works in 39 volumes, can now be obtained separately, complete in one volume. It is perhaps one of the most difï¬cult ï¬elds in literature, to take what was so lately a vast wilderness, withgonly the crudest materials to work with, and ,make of it a complete and ï¬nished narrative, as Mr. Bancroft has done, interweaving with the more sub- stantial political and industrial develop- ments those pleasing incidents and reâ€" mantic episodes connected with the wild and roving life here encountered. Mr. Bancroft’s pictures, in this volume, are drawn largely from life. Visiting the country in person he came into close contact with the old retired ofï¬cers of the Hudson’s Bay Company, most of whom have now passed away. From their experiences he not only obtained a large mass of information which other wise would have passed out of existence, but he was enabled to ï¬ll his work with vivid life and detail which in no other way could have been pOSsiblc. Besides being a masterpiece of historical investi gation, it is full of that thrilling interest which attaches to the subjugation and settlement of wild countries, which here have not their parallel in history.
