AGED PEOPLEâ€"That old lady of one hundred and ï¬ve summers is still threading her needle without spectacles, all over the country. It is a burning shame, considering the vast number of her descendants, that none of them have soul enough to purchase the old thing a pair of glasses. She has been threading that needle ever since her counterpart, the hale old gentleman of one hundred and six, started to saw the cord of wood. and that must have been over ï¬fty years ago. it must be extremely injurious to her eyesight, and if she keeps it up long enough she is sure to go blind ï¬nally, and won't be able to get the old man’s dinner when he shall come in and put away his saw. Will not some of the benevolent editors who watch her career with such touching solicitude send the poor girl a pair of green spectacles. If not they may ï¬nd themselves very hard pressed for lies. A PARAGRAPH which appeared in the Empire recently to the effect that all silver quarters which do not bear a small “ II" on the reverse side, under the knot, are counterfeit, has created more or less consternation all over the country. The statement is not correct. A majority of silver quarters do not bear the letter ‘11' at the place mentioned. The explana- tion of the mark is thiszâ€"All British coins are supposed to be issued from the royal mint, and the large majority in circulation have actually been so issued. Now and then, however, the pressure of work at the mint becomes so great, and urgency being necessary, some coinage has to be done outside, the ï¬rm emâ€" ployed for this purpose being Messrs. Ralph Heaton & Sons, Birmingham, The coins struck by them are stamped with letter “ n" to distinguish them from the royal mint mine. a.m., for the Roman Catholic Church, where solemn high mass de requiem was celebrated for the repose of his soul by the Rev. Father McMahon, the poster, with Rev. Father Egan, of Thornhill, as Deacon, and Rev. Father McGinley, of Uptergrove, as Sub-Deacon. After mass, Rev. Father Egan preached an eloquent and appropriate sermon, dwel- ling particularly on the certainty of death, the uncertainty of the hour, and the prime necessity of being always preâ€" pared to die. The funeral then left for the cemetery, followed by a large con- course of friends gathered together to pay this last tribute of respect to the remains of Breehin’s benefactor.â€"Oril- lie.
