Owing to our beinga day late lhin Week we have time to say that the " genial young man†of‘ the other sheet, has proved himself in this week’s paper to be a person of pigmean stature and mind. and it is doubtful whether his sickly carcass would be value in -the market for 400 cents let alone 8400. He is a (it representative of those who pay him fur doing their dirty work. Evidently the HERALD hit hard last week. From Don In Saturday Night. M. H. KEEFLER, On Tuesday night[ listened to my old friend, my ideal friend, William Ralph Meredith, as he addressed an audience which was only limited by the size of the Pavilion. While he spoke, that. immense nudienee, m:in of them standing, seemed so impressed by the message he had to dolivor that each an seated auditor, as he grew tired, Seemed careful to move from one foot to‘the other as noiselessly as possible. I would not allege that Mr. Meredith's rhetoric is of the sort which holds a listner spellbound. enraptured; it is not. It is tho mun. God doesn’t make men like him every day. The nobility of his nature, the elevation of his character, the lofty impulses which move him are attractive to everyone who does not rudely deny his own soul the right of judging of the worth of a man by those unerring instincts which make us aeâ€" quainted with goodness and ability. 1 shall not attribute to him the cunning equipment of' the. politician ; he looks it. I have often wondered if he really pos- sessed the astute mentality of the suc- eossful politician. He is so candid and so ingenuous, so unlike the ruck of politicians that one could not rate him without. berating all others. At the risk of seeming a devotee. I unhesits tingly pronounce him :1 brilliant ex» oeption to every other politician I ever know. He is accessible without being cheap, companionablo without being familiar, lovable without being effusive. His demeanor is that of‘ the gentlemanI ‘yet‘ his constituents call him “Bill†cven' while they, by every instinctive courtesy, treat him as their superior laiid let him“ linen? by every" dovié'é‘nï¬" peroratlon : 1 am ï¬ghting to advance the' prin- ciples of civil rights. He was sufl'ering from a bad cold, but. spoke, however, for an hour, in an eloquent manner. He showed up without mercy the falsity oi‘ the claim of Dr. Gilmour, that the government of Mr. Mowat was entitled to the honor of having conferred the manhood suffrage upon the people of' Ontario. That the legislation to that stop had been opposed for years by M r. Mowat and lhuh‘it was he and his fol~ lowers in the Opposition who had forced hULJhmnaLilm M Mr. Wallace was received with marks of much favor. He pulled to pieces the present management of Ontario’s ï¬nances. He referred to the parliament buildings’ job as a huge swindle upon the Canadians, and a slap in the face to our Canadian architectsâ€"~pointed Out how the design of Darling 8L Curry for a building costing $750,000 was fur preferable to the one of the Buffalo architect, which will cost over $2,000,â€" 000, and which has been acceptedby the model Mowat Government. The hisses from the audience came in here fast. and flit-ions at the action of the government in this respect. speaker next rel'erl'cd to the manner in which Dr. Gilmour had taken credit upon himself for certain 'oille introduced into the House, especially with regard to a bill for the adjustment of disputes. it remains to this dayI said the speaker. a dead lcttor upon the statute book. He also thought Dr. Gilmour very cheeky in claiming credit for the Factory Act and for the Employers Liability Act. In the year 1885 Mr. Meredith intro. duced in the Legislature the Eu‘iplo‘yers’ Liability Bill, and expected that it would have passed, but much to his‘ surprise when the time came for the second reading, Mr. Fraser mode the six month’s hoist, which means that it is not to be read at all. To show that they (the. government) were nnwilling‘ that the Conservative party should have the creditfor Allis, they brought» in at the next session the samemcasurc; but instead of' calling it the ‘hlmployer’s Liability Act’ they called it the ‘ Workmcn’s Compensation Act.’ This was. of course, rushed through in short order, and here we have our brave Dr. Gilmour claiming the credit. Mr. Meredith also stated that Dr. Gilmour voted against Mr. lngram's motion for the exemption of the income tax. Deal- ing with the’ proposed amendments to the Separate School Act he said: The language follo‘v‘vs the flag, and so long as the banner of liberty floats above the heads of Canadians, English shall be taught in Ontario schools. After rcl'er ring to other matters he said I have endeavored honestly to preserve my native land, I am here standing up ‘for the civil rights of the people and I am ready to fall in the noble cause il'it should be the will of the people. Mr. Meredith concluded with the following perortttion : Mr, Clandendn spoke ï¬rst, dwelling on and supporting with arguments his platform as laid down by himself in his address to the electors. . MLJ. S. Fullerton made a capital campaign speech. He was prepared to concede to every Roman Catholic what he believed he wds entitled to. He was very sarcastic in reference to Mr. Mowat’e action in granting his son th shrievalty of Torouto as well as the way in which the licenses were handled in the interests of the government of “truth and righteousness." I affection that their familiarity is but. a means of expiegsing in oqe y'vord a feel - ing which would be oheapeded if it. found conventional expressidn‘. The meeting at the Junction on Saturday night was in every way a sim- cess in point of numbers, énthUBiasm, and in accord with the Views of the speakers of the evening. Dr. Gilmour was not there. The ‘World says: Sometime around the last elections he made application for ad~ misainn to the Carlton Orange Lodge and his name is now on the books, but owing to the lateness of his applidation, or for some other reason, he did not be- come a member. And yet when he was asked at the Fail-bunk meeting the other day, whether he hat") ever tried to enter the Orange ranks, he replied “N0.†V There was one or two things 'which in our View took soufewhat. from the pleasure of attending.
