The Russian Countesa who Graduated in New York iopportunitles of Women. A woman recently applied to the New York College of Dentistry, East Twenty- third street and Second avenue, for admission as a student. She was of French nationality, and brought testimonials showing that she had already practised dentistry in Brazil and New Orleans. H01" application was re- fused. "Is it against your rules to admit women to the college?” a reporter asked Dr. Frank Abbot, the Dean of the faculty: “Was there anything in her case to dis- courage you?" “Well, there was. She was one of the smartest women I ever met. She was a young woman, and an enthusiast in her pro- fession. There was no comhattiug her re- sistless energy. She was not satisfied with class instruction or with the amount of at- tention other students received, but was constantly besieging members of the faculty for special favors. She would call at our houses, and would apply for special instruc- tion on points that would occur to her. and would encroach upon the opportunities of other students. She displayed amazing application and aptitude, and at the same time gave us an extraordinary amount of trouble. [am not in the least opposed to women entering the professions. but their admission to classes of male students is alto- gether impracticable. \Ve have applications every term, but we have always refused them except in that one case, and we shall never make an exception in the future." It is an advantage in the (listrihntion 0f lather. A lield of roots will furnish einpleyinentzit time: when there will he little ether pressing work, and in this way the farm hzmdx enn he hired by the season and kept busy all the time. In 1871 we admitted the Countess Swidersku of St. l’etershurg. Her application was supported by the Russian Minister at Washington and the British Consul in this city, and she presented ere- dentials showing that she had already prac- tised five years as a dentist. ln considera- tion of that fact she was allowed to take a degree after one year's study. She went back to St. l’etershurg, and is practising there with great succ ss. [ understand." “Is there any reason why women should not succeed in dentistry?” "I do not think there is. \Vomen possess in a high degree the deli acy of manipula- tion called for by dentistry. Strong, steady nerves that cannot be shaken by sudden emergencies are needed. and women *an dis- play great nerve. There is a woman assist- ant in Dr. Hasbrouck’s oilice on liroadvay, near T\\'enty-third street. and there is one employed in the rooms of the (‘olton Dental Association at the (looper Institute. and l understand that no display of sufiering ever interferes with the deftness and skill with which they discharge their duties. As to the business prospects of women dentists, it should be borne in mind that there is noth- ing in the business to create a preference for them with any eh s of customers. In the practice of medicine there is a large field presented. in which the services of women physicians are likely to be preferred when rontidence in their skill is established.” "Are therx any women dentists here?" "1 do not know of any women dentists, but there are women carrying on the busiâ€" ness of dentistry. Mrs. Napoleon l’reterre. after the death of her husband, kept up his business by employing dentists to attend to customers coming to the office. Mrs. Dii’fen- back, in Twenty-third street, and Mrs. Steinberger, in Fifty-ninth street, have in a similar manner carried on the business es- tablished by their husbands. Such a thing will not be possible hereafter. as nnderthe law of l87‘2 no one can practice save those licensed by the State Dental Society, and li- censes are granted only to such as can pas. an examination by the Board of Censors oi the society, or who hold a degree from a college recognized by the society. If a, we- man should qualify herself in a dentist‘s office to pass the examination, which is a rigid one, she would be licensed." "I do not know of any. There‘may be dentists who would take women into theiv otficefi and instruct them." "Is there, then, any place in this city where women can he taught dentistry ‘1" k“W|mt would you advise a woman tn (10 who wants to study dentistry?" “l ullvisc applicants togo to Philadelphia. 'l‘licrc are three dental collogcs in that city, and one, of then] is open to women. It has graduated quite a nnmbcrof women dentists. Uui' college is the only one in New York. and WC do not want women student' " Dr. Emily Blackwell of the \\'01nen"s Medical College of this city that she docs not know of any woman dentist in this city. Mrs Einstein, who studied dentistry in an ullice at Orange, is practising in that town. Dr. Blackwell thinks it is a profes- sion peculiarly suitable to women, and says that a Woman dentist wlm graduated in Philadelphia is meeting with snee , s in (u ,‘ many. and Illlllil)0l‘S among her friends Queen Victoria's daughter, the Crown l’rin- «Jess (if Germany.
