ARREST OF THE WOULD- BE MURDERER HOPES OF. THE PRESIDENT’S RECOVERY GUITTEAU EITHER A YILLIAN‘OR A LUNATIC On Saturday morning President Gar- field was shot twice while purchasing a ticket at the Railway depot at Washington One of the bullets entered his back and lodged in or near his liver. The event created intense excitement throughout the civ1lized world. At ï¬rst no hopes were entertained of his recovery. but now that he has survived so long strong hopes are being indulged in, and his condition is materially improving. The Assassin’s name is "liarles Guitteau, a Chicago law- yer, theologian, and politicianLaccording to his own account, who thus Confesses: “l was forced to do it by inspiration from God. 1 did it for political purposes, and through patriotic motives. l conceived and executed the elf-air myself. I wished to retire Garfield and save the Republic- an party. The simple solution of the pro- blem seems to be that he was a disappoin- ted ofï¬ce seeker. He is thought by some to be insane. He was arrested almost. immediately, and his only regretseems to that he did’nt kill him instantly. At pre- sent it is difï¬cult to say what the outcome may be. President Garï¬eld is a. man of sterling integrity and christian principle. Should death ensue, it would be a calam- ity realized not only by the Federal Uni- on, but by the civilized world. Despatch- es of sympathy have been received from almost every nation in the world, includ- ing Sweden, Italy, Japan, and the city of Rome, expressing hopes of his recovery. _ LATIER.;'fhe “Pregident continues to‘ unmove, and itiaï¬gpoctejl that 118» wii’lx recover. ‘ “" '1‘ "*“' GARFIELD’S LIFE (From Our Own Correspondent), Dominion Day was not celebrated in this village. Venncr’s Predictions for the Summer,‘ “wwwpe 23. ’ nngr, in a letter this: _:.m gymagne ' .egvennor in a letter this morning, says:-â€"“ Iiï¬liefé‘t’hm the present summer is onein a triad ofslm'llar summers, probably the middle one. It is likely to re- semble that of 1880, and to differ in some of its minor details. The approaching month, of July will give a great deal of rain, as in 1880, over a large portion of the United States and Canada, while in Great Britain the weather will in all probability be like- wise stormy and wet, The storms of wind, thunder, and lightning'are likely to be severe and frequent. The heaviest rains for New York and vicinity would locate after the IZOth, ntlprebably on the 21st or 22d dates; between the 10th and 15th days an exceed- ingly hot term is likely to be experienced in both the United Statesand Canada. Within a. few days from the close-[of the mouth, probably about the 27th or 28th, a cool wave Will occur, .carrying frosts in Canada, and cool weather generally, with storms oizwind and rain throughout the United States. Where storms have been severely felt in the western and south-western States during June, there also will the severest storms of July be experienced. Notwithstanding these , frequent and severe storms during the ; month, I frequent alternations of ï¬ne hot i weather will counteract to a great extent the damage done to crops in general in the west. The entrance of July in Canada, and also to a considerable extent in the Unlted States, Win be cool and showary, and the present look out for the fourth is not. a Very prom. ising one.
