AT WRIGHT & SON Timber, Timber floating, Gov- ernnlent works, Mills, etc. THE HUMBBR ANB ITS TRIBUTARIES. In 1801 Mr. Thomas 090‘ Lu Eng- 'lislimaii,'erectéd both a,‘ siiw- m and n; grist mill on the York side, north of the Dundzis road. Some years later he sold out to his son, and about the year 1840 the son sold the property to Mr. W. P. Howland, now Sir. \Villimn, who was soon joined by some of his brothers, two of whom Peleg and Fredrick, ultimately became sole proprietors. In 1845 the on tei‘prising brothers erected, south of the street, where a distillery formerly stood, anew flour mill, ï¬ve stories high, with six run of stones, “here a. flourishing business is still done. In the year fol- lowing the old mills were pulled down, and some of the old timbers were used about the tuil race and in various other ways. In 1844 the Howlnnds’ erected a saw mill on the York side, opposite Fish- er’s flour mill which WM run until 1868. Seven or eight years ago the mill was leased by two brothers Edward and Al- fred Musson who converted it into a. brewery, but after two yeius gave up the business. The buildng is still stunding. In 1820 a carding and fulliiig mill was 8â€" rected on the Etobicoke side opposite Howlend’s flour mill. It was run by different parties, the last of whom was Mr. James Williams, who was premie- tor about the year 1867. In 1855 a port- ion of the building was occupied by a Mr. “hit as a barrel factory. The At- kinson Bros. also used a. portion of the building as a. foundry, previous to the The following is one of a series ofpapzrs read before the York Pioneers by Mr. William Watson, of \Neston, one of the most prominent and respected members of the Assocxation, and is a minute history of the (~0- unty of York, especially the Western portion. (Farm No. 3, CONTINUED.) I In 3838 Mr. Rowland Burr purchased some lurid (m the York side, fmm Mr James Haines, nne of :1 family whose chief occupation was ï¬shing and hunt- ing. ()1) this property he erected a. saw mill, directly apposite Mr, Gam‘nle’s flour mill. In the sameyear Mr Galnhlu purchased the saw mill, and snnn afterâ€" wards converted it into a. barley mill. Sulaseqwntly he erected a mill for grind- ing bones, and as it adjuinec] the ‘barley mill both places were run by the same water powur. Some years latter the emim property Was murtgaged tn the Bunk of Upper Cnntda. In 1864. W") brothers. David and Jacub Atkinson. purchased the property frnm the bankr and converted the ï¬nnr mill into an im- plement factory, but; in March lasb' the building was destmyed by ï¬re. Some years before the other mill had been swept away by a spring freshen. In 1835 Squire Fisher erected a. four Ftory flour mill (Milwood Mills) two stor- ies of this building being constructed of stone and two of frame. In 1843 if was burned down a total loss to the owner, as there \vasno insurance on the building. It. was rebuilt in the following year, of stone and framework as before. .Of reâ€" cent years it. was leased to the Howlon-is. until the flood of September, 1878, wash- ed the dam away and cancellvd the lease In 1880 the property was purchased from the Fisher’s by Mr. George Smith, who has added another mill, and ï¬tted the whole with ï¬rst-class machinery f r the manufacture of blankets and otherxiem'y woollen goods. Mr. Smith‘s business is «Ming considerably to the population of Lambton. «at purchase of the property from the bank. Some of the old irun wheels, &c., are still lying about the place.‘ Lambtnn could also boast; of a chair factory, run by ’l‘hunms White, :1 carnage factory, and two cnopering establishments, one on the York side owned by Mr. Peter Dash, and the other on the Etobicoke side near where the new Methodist church now stands, run by a. Mr. Craig. The former establishmet was destroyed by ï¬re. The mad passing through the village was made by Govenur Simone. probably about 1794. In 1846 Mr. Samuel Scarlet erected a saw mill on the York side, about 9. mile nbnve Lmnbton, but not having auflicieut water-power. he, i11'1854, built on the Embicuke Hidr), utilizing portions of the nld timber and umchinery in the new mill. in 1864 this mill was destroyed by ï¬re, but; snnu rebuilt. Abnut 1875 the i'irupertv was purchqu by Mr. (.i‘reorgu Smnehnuso. The mill is still running about half a mile fartImrnpstream. Mr. Juhn Scarlet. father of Samuel Scarlet, e- meted a. saw mill in 1831. He likewise purtly built 3, flour mill abuut eighty rods below the saw mill, and a paper mill abuut the same distance above. Portâ€" imis of the wallslnf both are still standing. After ï¬omc years the saw mil‘, with quite a quantity nf laud became the prupurty (it hi5 ion Edward. In I 73 it was sold to 311‘. Matthew Canning and in still in wurking m‘dk-r. Opposite here, on the York side, Mr. Juseph Dennis generally known as “ Squire Dennis," erectvd u. known as “ Squire Dennis," erecti-d 9. saw mill in 1844. Years :Lficrwai‘dsit be- came the property of his son Henry, who for a. time carried on the flJX business. The building is still standing Some dis- tance above Mr. James VVllliH.I))S. better kiiownras “ Yankee Williams,†had a. carding and fulliug mill. In 1881 a Mr. George Dixon built a smv mill on the Flioliicoke side, a. few rods below wncre Eagle’s bridge now spans the i'iVei- but every vestige of the building has long since disappeared. Abullt eighty rods below, on the adjoining lwf, his brother 'l‘homas ï¬ve. years later erecth a. saw mill which after some years was sold to 2i Mr. Keatiug. In 1840 the property was purcliaSed by Gibson Bros, who pulled the old mill down and erected a flour mill in its ulnce. Latter it was sold to it Mr. Scherville, and during his owneisiip was burned down. The secmid time the mill was not rebuilt. The land, nine acres, was sold to Mr. Patrick Powers. 011 the York side, nppunile this point,Mr. Joseph Holley in 1820‘ erected a, saw mill. 'l'Wu years later he sold themill and form. 100 acres, to Mr. John Olin-w. The mill and 25 acres was subsequently sold to James Clilford, by him to J. N. Coons; and by Coons to Jiiiiies Mager, who erected a flax mill adjoining the saw mill. in 1853 Mr. John Dennis purchased the property. and during his ownership u wealch factory, constructed of stone and brick, was eâ€" rected on the site of the old mill. For some time- the mill was run by John Wardlnw, and later by Messrs. Furreu and Miles. Abunt1871 MessrsA Smith and \Vilby purchased the property, and extended buth the premises and the business; but two years ago Smith withdrew, leaving Wilhy sole pvoprietor. During the last ten years the factory was three times de- stroyed by ï¬re, and was each time re- built. The business has proved an ac- quisition to VVeP-tun. On the Embicnke _side, just above Eagle’s bridge, in 1834, Dir. Julm Paid (E Bro., erected a brewery which after a few inunt.l‘isi,\vas totally destroyed by ï¬re. ()ppuaite this placa, on the York side. Messrs. Tyiyll Si Noble, in 1863, cum- meuced an oil reï¬nery, but twa years laterlos! heavily by ï¬re. The premises however, uere rebuilt. A few yours lut- er the business waslbought off by the “nil ring †0f the day. Some distance farther up Mr. J. D. Porter, in 1830, emcted a. saw mill. but ten years afterwards the property passed into the hands of Mr. Burr, who erecth a flour mill and a wool- len factory (both in our village) a few rods west from the saw mill. 'l‘heflbnil- ding was burned down. In 1849 Mr. Robert McDougull purchased the prop- erty, and the following year erected a flour mill just below the szuv mill, four smries high and with six run of stones. About the same time the uld saw mill was pulled down, and a new one, which was running until 1870‘ nrected in its place. The flour mill is still (hing a. good busi- ness. A short distance ubuve Mr. James Gmcy, in 18.313, erected a brewery, which was run until destroyed by ï¬re a.an eleven years ago.
